Episode 8: The Billionaire's Dirty Secret
The night was very dark and very quiet. Tunde felt the strong hands of the guards on his arms. They were dragging him across the cold floor of the mansion. He tried to pull away, but they were too strong. Their fingers were like iron. Tunde looked to his left and saw Amina. The youngest wife was also being dragged by two other guards. Her beautiful white dress was now dusty and torn. She was crying very softly. Her tears looked like small pearls in the moonlight. She was very, very afraid. Tunde wanted to tell her that everything would be okay, but he did not believe it himself. He knew that the first wife had found out the truth. The soup with the shrimp had told her everything. Tunde was not the billionaire. He was just a poor man who looked like him. And now, the truth was leading them both into the dark.
They reached the back of the house. The air outside was cool, but the guards did not stop. They walked toward the big swimming pool. The water was dark and very still. It looked like a big black mirror. Tunde remembered the secret door he had found under the pool deck. He knew where they were going. He felt a cold shiver go down his back. The guards pulled at the hidden door. It opened with a loud creak. They pushed Tunde and Amina down the stone stairs. The stairs were very narrow and very steep. Tunde almost fell, but a guard pushed him harder. They went down and down until they reached the bottom. The air changed. It was no longer the air of the night. It was the freezing air of the hidden basement.
The room was very bright because of the flickering lights on the ceiling. The humming sound of the machine was very loud here. It sounded like a giant bee that never slept. Amina looked around the room. She saw the metal walls. She saw the gray floor. And then, she saw it. In the middle of the room sat the large glass box. It was full of clear, thick ice. Amina walked closer, her legs shaking. She looked into the ice and let out a loud, high scream. She saw the face of the real Chief Williams. He was frozen in the ice. His eyes were closed. His skin was the color of a white cloud. Amina fell to her knees and began to cry even louder. She was terrified. She realized that her husband was dead. She realized that he had been here the whole time, right under the pool where people played and laughed.
Tunde felt a wave of sadness for her. He stood next to her and tried to keep his own heart from jumping out of his chest. He looked at the frozen Chief. They looked so much alike. It was like looking at a version of himself that had been turned into a statue. The guards stood by the door, watching them like hungry dogs. Suddenly, the door at the top of the stairs opened. Two people walked down. It was the first wife and her eldest son. The first wife was not wearing her shiny black dress anymore. She was wearing a thick coat to keep out the cold. Her eyes were still like cold stones. Her son was walking right behind her. He was a big man with a mean face. In his hand, he was carrying a very heavy metal pipe. The pipe was long and gray and looked very dangerous.
The first wife walked right up to Tunde. She did not look at the frozen body of her husband. She only looked at Tunde. A mean smile was on her face. She looked very proud of herself. She said that she was happy the game was finally over. She said that Tunde had been a very good actor, but he was not good enough. She told him that she knew he was just a beggar from the dusty road. Then, she looked at the frozen Chief in the glass box. She did not look sad at all. She told Tunde and Amina the truth. She said that she and her son were the ones who killed the real Chief Williams. She said they did it many weeks ago. Tunde asked why. He asked how a wife could kill her own husband. The room was so quiet that his voice sounded very loud.
The eldest son stepped forward. He hit the metal pipe against his other hand. It made a loud clink sound. He said that the real Chief had become a very foolish man. He said the Chief wanted to give all his billions of naira away. The Chief wanted to build schools for poor children. He wanted to buy food for people who were hungry. He wanted to give his money to the orphans instead of his own family. The son was very angry as he spoke. He said that the money belonged to them. He said they worked hard to be rich and they did not want to share it with the poor people on the street. So, they decided to stop him. They killed him and hid him in the ice so no one would find him. They needed a fake Chief to sign the papers so they could take all the money for themselves. That was why they found Tunde.
Tunde felt a cold anger in his chest. The real Chief had wanted to do good things. The real Chief was a kind man at the end of his life. And these people had killed him because they were greedy. They were like monsters dressed in expensive clothes. The first wife laughed a cold laugh. She said that they were done with Tunde now. They had all the papers they needed. They did not need a fake husband anymore. The son raised the heavy metal pipe high into the air. He looked at Tunde and laughed. He said that they had killed the real Chief once, and now they were going to kill his twin. He called Tunde a twin because they looked so much alike. He said it would be very easy to get rid of him. They would put him in the ice too, or they would find another way to hide his body.
Amina was still on the floor, shaking with fear. She looked up at the son and the metal pipe. She begged them to stop. She told them that they could have all the money. She just wanted to go home to her village. But the first wife shook her head. She said that Amina knew too much now. She said they had a very good plan for the police. They were going to tell everyone that the Chief and his young wife had run away together. They would say that they took a lot of money and went to a far country like America or London. They would tell the police that the Chief was tired of his old life and wanted to start a new one with Amina. No one would ever come looking for them. No one would ever know that they were actually at the bottom of a cold basement under a swimming pool.
Tunde looked at the cold gray walls. He looked at the heavy iron door at the top of the stairs. He looked at the two guards who were blocking the exit. Then he looked at Amina, who was crying for her life. He knew he had to do something. He was a man from the street. He had spent his whole life learning how to survive when things were bad. He had learned how to be fast. He had learned how to use his brain when he had no money or power. He thought about the hidden room. He thought about the humming machine in the corner. He knew that he could not fight the guards and the son with his bare hands. He needed to use his street smarts. He needed to find a way to trick them before that heavy pipe came down on his head.
The son was getting ready to swing the pipe. He was taking a deep breath. His face was full of hate. The first wife was watching with a smile, waiting for the end. Tunde felt his heart beating very fast. He looked around the floor for anything he could use. He looked at the ice box. He looked at the wires coming from the humming machine. He knew that this was his last chance. If he did not move now, he and Amina would never see the sun again. They would become part of the billionaire's dirty secret forever. He shifted his weight to his feet. He looked the son right in the eye. He did not look like a scared beggar anymore. He looked like a man who was ready to fight for his life. The metal pipe started to move. It was coming down fast. Tunde had only one second to save them both.
The air in the room was so cold that it hurt to breathe. Every breath Tunde took felt like he was swallowing small needles of ice. He could see his breath in the air. It looked like a white ghost dancing in front of him. He looked at the first wife. She was so calm. She did not care that she was about to watch someone die. She only cared about her bank account. She only cared about the gold and the big houses. Tunde thought about the people he had helped yesterday. He thought about the gatekeepers and their new boots. He thought about the tired servants who were at home resting. He realized that even if he died today, he had done something good with his life. He had been a billionaire for a short time, and he had used it to be a hero.
But he did not want to die. He wanted to live. He wanted to make sure these bad people did not win. He looked at the eldest son. The son was not as smart as the mother. The son was just big and angry. Tunde knew that big, angry people make mistakes. They move too fast and they do not think about what is happening around them. Tunde waited for that mistake. He watched the son's feet. He watched the way he held the pipe. He looked at the shadow the son made on the floor. Everything felt like it was moving in slow motion. He could hear the drip of the ice melting a little bit. He could hear the humming of the big machine. He could hear Amina's soft sobs. He knew that he was the only one who could save her.
He was the only one who could stop this nightmare. He moved his hand slowly. He reached for something near his foot. He did not look down. He kept his eyes on the son. He knew that if he looked down, the son would know what he was doing. He had to be like a shadow. He had to be like the wind. He had to be the Tunde from the street. The Tunde who could find a way out of any trap. The Tunde who never gave up. The son was laughing now. It was a mean, loud laugh. He thought he had already won. He thought Tunde was just a weak beggar. He did not know that a man who has nothing has everything to lose. He did not know that Tunde was ready to fight harder than any billionaire.
The pipe was at the top of its swing. It was the highest it could go. In one more second, it would be coming down. Tunde's muscles were tight. He was ready to jump. He was ready to move. He was ready to be the man who survived the billionaire's dirty secret. The light flickered again. For a tiny second, the room was dark. That was the second Tunde was waiting for. He knew that in the dark, he had the advantage. He knew how to move when no one could see. He felt the cold floor under his feet. He felt the hope in his heart. He was going to save Amina. He was going to stop the killers. He was going to make sure the real Chief's wish came true. The son began to swing. The metal pipe cut through the cold air with a whistling sound. It was coming. It was almost here.
Tunde felt the rush of wind. He dropped to the floor and rolled as fast as he could. He reached out and grabbed a loose wire from the humming machine. He knew that the machine was very powerful. He knew it had a lot of electricity. He did not care about the shock. He only cared about stopping the pipe. He pulled the wire with all his strength. The son screamed as the pipe hit the floor instead of Tunde. The first wife shouted for the guards. Amina crawled toward the stairs. Tunde was on his feet again. He was breathing hard. The room was full of noise and cold. But he was still alive. He was still fighting. And he was not going to stop until the secret was gone forever.
What do you think Tunde will do with the electric wire to stop the guards?
Will Amina make it up the stairs before the guards catch her?
Now that the son has missed his swing, will he be even angrier or will he be scared?
If the police arrive, will they believe Tunde or will they believe the first wife's lies?
