Episode 9: The Billionaire's Dirty Secret

The basement was the coldest place Tunde had ever been. It was so cold that the air felt like tiny needles on his skin. He stood on the hard stone floor. His legs were shaking, but not just because of the cold. He was looking at the big glass box. Inside the box was the real Chief Williams. The real Chief was frozen in the ice. He looked like a statue made of white glass. Amina was on the floor next to Tunde. She was crying very hard. Her eyes were red and her face was wet with tears. She was so scared that she could not even stand up. She kept looking at the dead man in the ice. She could not believe that the man she married was actually down here in this dark place.

The first wife stood near the stairs. She was wearing a very thick coat made of fur. She looked very warm and very comfortable. She did not care that Tunde and Amina were freezing. She did not care that her husband was dead in a box. She only cared about the money. She only cared about the power. Her eldest son stood next to her. He was a very large man. He had big arms and a mean face. In his hands, he held a very heavy metal pipe. The pipe was long and gray. It looked like it could break anything it touched. The son moved closer to Tunde. He was walking slowly. He wanted Tunde to feel afraid. He wanted to see Tunde beg for his life. He raised the pipe high over his head. He was getting ready to strike. He wanted to finish what his mother started.

Tunde did not move. He did not run away. He did not hide his face. He stood very tall. He looked the son right in the eye. Tunde was a man from the street. He had seen many scary things in his life. He had been hungry. He had been alone. He had learned that when you are in danger, you must be brave. He did not blink. He did not let his eyes show any fear. He looked at the first wife. He looked at the guards by the door. He was ready. "You can kill me," Tunde said. His voice was very loud. It echoed off the metal walls of the basement. "You can hit me with that pipe. You can put me in the ice. But it will not save you. The whole world is already listening to you right now."

The first wife laughed. It was an ugly, mean laugh. She asked Tunde who was listening. She said there was no one in the basement except for them. She said the walls were very thick. She said no one could hear them scream. Tunde reached into his pocket slowly. The guards moved forward, but the first wife told them to wait. She wanted to see what the beggar had in his hand. Tunde pulled out a small black device. It was very small, like a toy car. But it had a tiny red light on it. The red light was glowing. It was blinking on and off. Tunde explained that it was a recording machine. He had found it in the Chief's desk when he was looking for the blood-stained shirt. The machine was very smart. It had recorded every single word they said. It had recorded the first wife saying she killed the real Chief. It had recorded the son saying they wanted the money for themselves.

The first wife's face turned very white. She looked like she had seen a ghost. But Tunde was not done yet. He told her that a recording was not the only thing he had. He told her about the Chief's satellite phone. A satellite phone is a very special phone. It can call people even when there is no signal. It can talk to the whole world from anywhere. Tunde told her that before the guards captured him, he had used the phone. He had called the main police station in the city. He had told the police that there was a murder at the mansion. Then, he had left the phone line open. He had hidden the phone in his jacket. The police had been listening the whole time. They heard the confession. They heard the threats. They heard the son talking about the metal pipe. The police knew everything now.

The first wife let out a scream of pure rage. It was a sound like a wild animal. She was so angry that her face turned red. She knew that her secret was gone. She knew that the police were coming for her. She did not want to go to jail. She did not want to lose her money. She pointed her finger at Tunde and Amina. She told the guards to finish them quickly. She told them to kill them both and hide the bodies. She said they had to leave the house and run away before the police arrived. The guards looked at each other. They were afraid, but they always did what the first wife told them to do. They started to move toward Tunde. The son raised the metal pipe again. He was going to strike with all his strength.

But at that exact moment, something happened. A new sound filled the air. It was a loud sound. It was the sound of sirens. Woo-woo-woo! The sirens were very close. They were right outside the house. They were coming from many police cars. The sound was so loud that the whole basement started to shake. The guards stopped. The son dropped the pipe. It hit the floor with a loud clang. The first wife looked at the ceiling with wide eyes. Suddenly, there was a loud bang at the top of the stairs. The heavy basement door was kicked open. The wood broke into many small pieces. Loud voices shouted for everyone to put their hands in the air. Bright lights began to shine down the stairs. The police had arrived. The secret was finally out for everyone to see.

Everyone was waiting. The story was almost done. But not yet. There was more. Always more. The billionaire had many secrets. This was the biggest one. Tunde wanted to go outside. He wanted to see the sun. He wanted to eat good food. He wanted to help the poor. The police were strong. They had guns. They had uniforms. They came down the stairs. They shouted loudly. They made the bad people stop. It was a good day. A very good day. Tunde felt the cold. He knew the police were there. The lights were bright. The room was big. The ice was cold. The man was brave. He looked at the door. He was happy. He was safe.

The bad people were sad. They were scared. The first wife was shouting. The son was quiet. The guards were still.

Do you think the first wife will try to run away through a secret tunnel?

Will the guards tell the police that they were only following orders?

How will Amina react when she finally sees the police coming to save her?

Do you think Tunde will be arrested too for pretending to be the Chief?
