Episode 7: The Billionaire's Dirty Secret
The sun was going down behind the big trees of the mansion. Tunde sat in his large room and looked at his hands. His hands were clean now. They did not have the dirt from the streets on them anymore. He felt like a different person. He had spent the whole day doing good things. He had given the guards new boots. He had given the servants a day to rest. He had even given a beautiful flower to Amina. These things made his heart feel very light and warm. He thought that maybe he could stay here forever. He thought that maybe he could keep being the Chief and use all this money to help many people. He felt like he was winning the game. But Tunde did not know that the game was about to get much harder. He did not know that the first wife was planning a very bad surprise for him.
A small knock came at his door. A young boy in a white uniform stood there. The boy said that the first wife wanted to see him. She had invited him to a private dinner in her own part of the house. She said she wanted to celebrate his return home. Tunde felt a little bit of fear in his stomach. He remembered the cold eyes of the first wife. She was not a kind woman. Why did she want to celebrate now? But he knew he could not say no. A real husband would go to dinner with his wife. He had to keep playing the part. He put on a clean shirt and walked down the long hallway. He followed the boy to a room he had never seen before. It was a small dining room with a table made of dark wood. There were candles on the table that made the shadows dance on the walls.
The first wife was already there. She was sitting at the table. She wore a dress that was very shiny and very black. She looked like a queen, but she did not look like a happy queen. She did not smile when Tunde walked in. She just pointed to the chair across from her. Tunde sat down slowly. He felt like he was sitting in a trap. On the table, there was a big bowl of steaming egusi soup. The smell was very strong and very good. It smelled of rich spices and palm oil and melon seeds. Tunde had not eaten much all day. His stomach made a loud noise because he was so hungry. The first wife pushed the bowl toward him. She told him to eat. She said she had the cook make it just for him. She said it was his favorite soup.
Tunde looked at the soup. It looked just like the soup his mother used to make in the village. It made him feel a little bit of home. He forgot about being careful. He forgot that he was in a house full of secrets. He picked up his spoon and began to eat. The soup was hot and delicious. He could taste the ground melon seeds and the green vegetables. He could taste the fish and the spices. He ate one spoonful after another. He was so hungry that he did not even look up. He did not see the way the first wife was watching him. She was leaning forward. Her eyes were very wide. She was watching every single move he made. She was watching his face very closely. She was waiting for something to happen.
Tunde finished the whole bowl of soup. He wiped his mouth with a white napkin. He felt very full and very happy. He looked at the first wife and said thank you. He tried to make his voice sound deep and powerful like the real Chief. But the first wife did not say you are welcome. She did not move at all. She just sat there in the silence. The room became very quiet. The only sound was the ticking of a clock on the wall. Tunde felt the fear coming back. He wondered why she was looking at him like that. He wondered if there was something wrong with his face. He touched his cheek, but everything felt normal. He did not feel sick. He did not feel hurt. He felt perfectly fine.
Then, the first wife stood up very slowly. She stood up so slowly that it was scary. A wicked grin began to spread across her face. It was a mean grin. It was the grin of a person who had just caught a mouse in a trap. She looked at Tunde with eyes that were full of hate. She began to laugh a little bit. It was a cold laugh that made Tunde feel very cold inside. He asked her what was so funny. He asked her why she was laughing. But she did not answer him right away. she just kept looking at him. She looked at his neck and his chest. She looked at his hands to see if they were shaking. But Tunde was fine. He did not have any problems at all.
Finally, the first wife spoke. Her voice was very loud now. It was not a whisper anymore. She shouted so loud that the candles on the table flickered. She said that the real Chief Williams had a very bad allergy. She said that the real Chief could not eat shrimp. If the real Chief ate even a tiny bit of shrimp, his throat would close up. He would not be able to breathe. He would turn red and start to cough. He would be gasping for air right now. The first wife leaned over the table. She pointed her finger at the empty bowl. She said that the soup was full of shrimp. She had told the cook to grind the shrimp into a fine powder and mix it into the soup. She had done it to see what would happen.
Tunde felt his heart drop into his shoes. He realized what he had done. He had eaten the trap. He did not have any allergies. He could eat shrimp all day and feel fine. But the real Chief could not. By eating the soup and staying healthy, he had proved that he was not the real Chief Williams. He had shown the first wife that he was a fake. He tried to think of something to say. He tried to think of a lie. He wanted to say that his allergy had gone away. He wanted to say that the doctor gave him medicine. But he was too shocked to speak. His mouth was open, but no words came out. He just stared at the woman across the table.
The first wife did not stop shouting. She asked him who he was. She asked him what he had done with the real Chief. She said she knew he was a poor man from the streets. She said she knew he was a liar and a thief. She called him a monster. Tunde tried to jump up from his chair. He wanted to run out of the room. He wanted to find a way to escape from the mansion. He wanted to get away from her mean face and her loud voice. But he was too slow. Before he could stand up, he felt two very strong hands grab his shoulders. Then he felt two more hands grab his arms.
Two strong guards had been hiding in the shadows behind him. They were big men with very large muscles. They held him so tight that he could not move. Tunde struggled and tried to kick his legs, but it was no use. The guards were much stronger than he was. They pulled him back into the chair. The first wife walked around the table. She stood right in front of him. She looked down at him like he was a bug she wanted to squash. She said that he was going to tell her everything. She said he was going to tell her where the money was and what happened to her husband. Tunde looked into her cold eyes and knew that his life was in big trouble. The dinner was over, and the secret was gone.
Tunde felt like crying. He had been so close to helping people. He had been so close to making a new life. But now, he was a prisoner. He was a prisoner in a house of gold. He looked at the guards and then at the wife. He wondered what they were going to do to him. He thought about the frozen body of the Chief in the basement. Would they put him in a box of ice too? Would they throw him back into the street? Or would they do something much worse? The first wife leaned in close to his ear. She told him that nobody was coming to save him. She told him that he was all alone now. The darkness of the room felt like it was closing in on him.
Outside, the wind began to blow through the trees. It made a sound like a person crying. Inside the room, the candles finally went out. The only light came from the moon outside the window. Tunde sat in the dark with the guards holding him tight. He could hear his own heart beating. It was very fast. He was very scared. He had tried to be a king, but he was just a man caught in a web of lies. He had eaten the soup, and now he had to pay the price. The first wife told the guards to take him away. She told them to take him to the dark place under the house. Tunde tried to shout for help, but one of the guards put a hand over his mouth. Everything went black.
The mansion was very quiet again. The servants did not know what was happening. The other wives were asleep. Only the first wife and her guards knew the truth. They had the fake Chief, and they were ready to find out the rest of the dirty secrets. Tunde was no longer the billionaire. He was just a man in a lot of trouble. He did not know if he would ever see the sun again. He did not know if he would ever see Amina again. He was being carried down into the dark, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. The story of the billionaire was turning into a nightmare for the man from the street.
The first wife watched them carry him away. She had a cold smile on her face. She felt like she had won. She felt like the house was hers again. She did not care about the man she had just caught. She only cared about the power. She walked out of the room and closed the door. The dinner was finished. The trap had worked. The secret was out, and the danger was only beginning. Tunde was going to have to be very smart if he wanted to live. He was going to have to find a way to turn the game around one more time. But for now, he was just a man in the dark, waiting for whatever came next.
How do you think Tunde will try to explain why he didn't have an allergic reaction to the shrimp?
Where do you think the guards are taking Tunde?
Will Amina find out that Tunde is in trouble and try to help him?
If you were Tunde, what would you say to the first wife to try and stay alive?
