The Prince With 10 Brides
The sun had finally gone down behind the hills. The palace of Omalin was very dark and very quiet. Inside the big stone walls, the King was sitting on his throne. He was not wearing his crown because his head felt too heavy with sadness. He looked at the empty floor and felt like his life was over. He had called the best doctors. He had called the most famous priests. He had even called ten beautiful ladies to be brides for his son. But everyone had failed. The ladies had all run away because they were scared of the Prince. They did not love the man; they only loved the gold. Now, the King was all alone in the big hall. He thought that his son, Prince Azu, would stay a wild beast forever. He thought that the light would never come back to his family. Just as the King was about to close his eyes and lose all his hope, something happened. A very small figure appeared at the big palace gates.
This person was not wearing silk. She was not wearing gold beads or expensive jewelry. It was Ada. She was a simple girl from the village. She was the one who had not been chosen by the King. The other people in the palace had said mean things to her. They had insulted her. They had told her she was too poor and too simple to be a bride for a prince. After the big party, everyone had forgotten about her. They thought she had gone back to her small hut to cry. But Ada did not come to the palace to cry. She walked past the tall guards at the gate. The guards were surprised to see her. She was carrying a small wooden bowl of warm water and a clean white cloth. She did not look at the gold on the walls. She did not look at the big paintings or the many servants in the halls. She did not care about the riches of the palace. She only looked for one thing. She looked for the man she had loved since they were children. She remembered when they were little kids playing in the green fields. She remembered how Azu used to laugh and how he used to pick flowers for her. To her, he was not just a prince. He was her best friend.
Ada walked slowly through the long, dark hallways. Her footsteps made a soft sound on the stone floor. The servants watched her from the shadows. They wondered why this simple girl was here. They thought she was crazy to go near the Prince. But Ada did not stop. she reached the heavy wooden door of the Prince's room. She took a deep breath and pushed the door open. Inside, the room was very cold and smelled like old dust. There was no light except for a tiny bit of moonshine coming through the window. In the corner, she saw a shape moving. It was Prince Azu. He was not the handsome man she remembered. He was dirty and his hair was messy. When he saw Ada, he did not smile. He did not say hello. Instead, he made a loud growling sound. He bared his sharp teeth at her like a hungry animal. He tried to hide deeper in the dark shadows. He wanted her to be afraid. He wanted her to run away like the other ten brides had done.
But Ada did not run away. She did not scream or drop her bowl of water. She did not feel afraid of the beast in the corner. She looked at him with very kind eyes. She saw the pain that was hiding behind his anger. She walked into the middle of the room and sat down right on the dusty floor. She did not care if her dress got dirty. She set the bowl of water down beside her. Then, she began to do something very special. She began to hum a soft melody. It was a beautiful song that her grandmother had taught her a long time ago. It was a song about having patience. It was a song about how the sun always rises after a long night. It was a song about the beauty of the rain that makes the flowers grow. Her voice was very soft and very sweet. It was the only sound in the quiet room.
Azu, she whispered. Her voice was like a cool stream of water on a hot day. It is me, Ada. I am here now. She did not move too fast. She stayed very still so she would not scare him. She began to sing the lyrics of the song aloud. She sang about the trees and the wind. She sang about the simple things they used to love when they were young. As she sang, the room seemed to change. The cold shadows did not feel so scary anymore. It felt like a warm light was filling the space. The Prince stopped growling. He stayed very still in his corner. He listened to the music. It was a sound he had not heard in a very long time. It was a sound of true love. Ada slowly reached out her hand. She did not grab him. she just held her hand out and waited. After a minute, she gently took his trembling hand into her own. His skin was cold, but her hand was warm.
She kept singing the song. She sang louder and more clearly. Her voice was full of hope. To the shock of the servants who were watching from the door, something amazing started to happen. The Prince did not pull his hand away. He did not try to bite her. He looked into Ada’s eyes. For the first time in many weeks, the thick fog in his eyes began to thin out. He was starting to see her. He was starting to remember who he was. Then, the Prince’s lips began to move. He was not growling anymore. He was trying to make a different sound. He began to sing the song with her. His voice was very weak and a little bit shaky, but it was clear. He remembered the words. He remembered the melody. He was singing the song of his childhood.
The miracle was happening right there in the dark room. The simple girl with the wooden bowl was doing what the doctors and the magic charms could not do. The King heard the singing and ran to the door. He stood there with his mouth open. He could not believe his ears. His son was singing. His son was acting like a human being again. The power of the song and the power of Ada's pure heart were breaking the dark chains. The Prince looked at Ada and a small tear fell down his dirty face. He was coming back from the darkness. He was fighting to be Azu again. But even though he was singing, his body was still very weak. The dark magic was very strong and it did not want to let go. The miracle had started, but the danger was not over yet. Everyone held their breath. They watched the Prince and the girl sitting on the floor. It was a beautiful sight, but it was also a very scary moment. Would the song be enough to bring him back completely? Or would the darkness pull him back in before the morning came?
The servants whispered to each other in the hall. They had never seen anything like this. They saw that Ada did not want the Prince's money. She did not want his palace. She only wanted him to be okay. The King felt very ashamed. He remembered how he had treated Ada. He realized that he had been looking for a queen in the wrong places. He had looked at the outside of the other ladies, but he had ignored the inside of Ada. Now, the girl he had ignored was the only one who could save his family. Ada did not look at the King. She only looked at Azu. She squeezed his hand and kept singing. She would not stop until the sun came up. She would not stop until her friend was safe. The room was full of the sound of two voices singing together. It was a song of life and a song of hope. But the Prince's eyes were still half-closed. He was still struggling. The battle for his soul was happening right now. The miracle was beginning, but the end of the story was still a mystery.
