Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 8
The Prince With 10 Brides
The sun was beginning to go down behind the big hills of the village of Omalin. The sky was turning a very dark color of orange and purple. It was a beautiful sunset, but no one in the royal palace was looking at the sky today. Everyone was looking at the Chief Priest. He stood very still on the big stone steps of the palace courtyard. He looked very tall and very wise. His long white hair moved slowly in the evening wind like a soft cloud. He held his old wooden staff very tightly in his hand. The ten brides were still standing in a long line in front of him. They were all very quiet now. No one was laughing. No one was bragging about their beauty. The air was very heavy with a secret fear that made their hearts beat fast. The King was sitting on a smaller chair nearby. He was waiting with a sad face to see what the Priest would say next. The Chief Priest cleared his throat. The sound was very loud in the quiet air. He looked at the girls one by one. He saw their very expensive dresses made of silk and gold. He saw their shining beads that cost a lot of money. But he also saw the guilt in their eyes. He knew that their hearts were not as beautiful as their clothes. He knew that they had used dark and secret magic to get close to the Prince. He knew that their love was not real. It was a lie. The Priest sighed because he knew that a very hard time was coming for everyone in the palace. He looked at the shadows on the ground and knew that the truth was about to be revealed to the whole village. The silence lasted for a very long time. It was the kind of silence that makes you feel cold even when the sun is out. The Priest took a step forward and the sound of his sandals on the stone was like a drum. He was ready to give the final challenge to the women who wanted to be Queens.
The Chief Priest made a final challenge. He spoke with a voice that was as strong as a big clap of thunder in the rainy season. He said that pretty words and nice smiles were no longer enough to save the Prince. He told the ladies that being a Queen was not just about wearing a gold crown or sitting on a soft chair. He said it was about caring for the person you loved when they were hurt or sick. He looked at the line of ten ladies and gave them a very hard task to do. Each of you who claims to be the Prince's bride must come forward right now, he said. You must take him into your own care. You must clean his skin because it is covered in thick dirt and grey dust. You must brush his long, wild hair that is full of dry leaves and twigs. You must feed him with your own hands, even if he does not want to eat. You must stay with him in that dark and scary room until his mind returns to him. You must stay with him even when he is acting like a beast. You must stay with him even when he growls at you. If your love is true and pure, he will be healed by your touch. This was the big test. It was a test of the heart. The Priest wanted to see who was there because they loved the Prince and who was there because they just loved the palace and the money. He wanted to see if any of these ten girls had a love that was stronger than their own fear. The King watched with hopeful eyes. He wanted to believe that one of these women would be the hero. He wanted to believe that his son would be saved by a touch of kindness. The villagers who were standing far away also watched in silence. They wanted their Prince back. They wanted the kind man they used to know. The challenge was set and the time for talking was over. Now it was time for action. The ladies looked at the dark door of the Prince's chamber and they felt a cold shiver go down their backs. They were not ready for this.
The first lady to step forward was Zola. She was always the one who talked the most about how much she loved the Prince. She always said that her love was the strongest in the whole village. She was wearing a dress made of the finest red silk that shimmered in the light. She walked slowly toward the Prince's room. Her heart was beating very fast, like a trapped bird. She thought to herself that maybe if she just touched him, the magic would break and he would become a handsome man again. She thought that she would look very brave if she was the one to save him. She pushed the heavy wooden door open and stepped inside the dark room. But as soon as she saw the Prince, she stopped moving. The room smelled very bad. It smelled like old sweat and sour air. The Prince was huddled in a dark corner on the floor. His hair was very wild and full of dirty things. His skin was very dirty and looked grey like ash. His eyes were wide open and they were filled with a terrifying madness that did not look human at all. He looked like a wild beast from the deepest part of the forest. He looked scary and mean. Zola jumped back in disgust. She felt very sick just looking at him. I cannot touch a madman! Zola cried out in a loud and shaky voice. She quickly pulled her expensive silk skirts away from him so they would not get any dirt on them. She was afraid that he would reach out and touch her and ruin her beautiful clothes. She did not see a man who was in a lot of pain. She did not see a man who needed help. She only saw something ugly and scary that she did not like. She felt that he was not worth the trouble anymore. She turned around and ran out of the room as fast as her legs could carry her. She did not want to be near him for one more second. She forgot all about her promise to love him forever.
Next was Nneka. She was the lady who had used the magic song to try and win the Prince's heart. She thought she was much stronger and braver than Zola. She walked into the dark room with her head held very high. She thought she could handle anything. But when she saw the Prince, her courage vanished instantly. He was growling at the shadows on the wall. He was scratching the hard floor with his fingernails until they bled. He looked like he did not even know what a human being was anymore. He looked at Nneka and his eyes were cold and yellow. Nneka began to shout with anger. This is not the Prince I married! she shouted so loudly that all the people out in the courtyard could hear her. I wanted a powerful king who would sit on a tall throne with me! I wanted a man who would give me lots of gold and power! I did not want a beast! She was very angry and her face was red. She felt like the Prince had cheated her by becoming sick. She thought it was not fair that she had to deal with this. She did not want to help him get better. She only wanted to use him to get what she wanted. She realized that her illegal magic had given her the title of a bride, but it had also destroyed the man she wanted to rule with. She realized that she had exactly what she asked for, but not what she truly needed. She had a husband now, but he was a monster in a dark corner. She felt cheated and she felt lied to. She did not care about the Prince's soul or his life. She only cared about her own life. She turned her back on the Prince and walked away with a mean look on her face. She was done with him. She walked away fast.
One by one, the other ladies who had used the dark charms tried to go into the room. Each one of them had the exact same reaction. They walked in and they saw the dirty floor. They saw the terrifying look of madness in the Prince's eyes. They saw that he could not speak or smile or say their names. And each one of them felt ashamed and very afraid. They had used bad and illegal methods to win his heart, but they had no power to fix the big mess they had made. They had the title of bride on their names, but they had no real love to give in their hearts. They had no patience to stay and help him. They had no kindness to clean his dirty skin. They realized that they had created a monster with their own hands and their own spells. They had wanted the crown and the glory and the fame, but they did not want the hard work of caring for a person who was suffering. They were very selfish women. They only cared about their own comfort and their own happiness. They loved the golden crown, but they hated the poor man who was wearing it. They did not see the human being inside the madness. They only saw a problem they did not want to solve. One by one, all the ladies turned their backs and walked out of the palace gates. They left the Prince alone in his darkness. They did not even look back one time. They just wanted to go home to their own beds and forget about the beast in the room. They were ashamed of what they had done, but they were too selfish to fix it. They left the King all alone. The courtyard was empty. The girls were all gone. Their fake love was finished.
The palace was now very quiet and very sad. The ten brides were all gone now. They had left their promises behind. The King was left sitting on his chair with his head in his hands. He was crying silent tears for his son. He felt like his heart was empty. The Chief Priest looked at the empty courtyard and he sighed a very long and heavy sigh. He knew that this would happen. He knew that fake love cannot stand the test of pain. The Prince was still in the dark room. He was still all alone. He was still lost in his deep madness. The darkness was getting deeper and deeper as the night came to the village. The wind was very cold and the shadows on the walls were getting very long. It seemed like the story of Prince Azu was going to end in a very sad and lonely way. The Prince was abandoned by all the women who said they loved him when he was strong. He was now just a shell of a man, left to suffer in a world that had forgotten his name. The horror was still there in the room, and the darkness was growing every single minute. The mystery was very deep, and the hope was almost gone. The King looked around the empty square and wondered if his son would ever be a man again. He wondered if anyone truly loved the Prince for who he was. It was a very dark night in Omalin and the Prince was all alone with his demons. There was no more music. There was no more dancing. There was only the sound of the wind and the crying of a father who had lost his child to a darkness that nobody could understand. The village was quiet. The people were hiding in their homes. They were all scared of the monster in the palace. They did not know if the Prince would ever come back to them. They did not know if the kingdom was lost forever. It was a time of great sadness and great fear for everyone in Omalin. The Prince sat in the dark and waited for an end that he could not see. His heart was heavy and his mind was gone. He was truly alone in the world and the world was a very scary place for a man who had no one to love him. The darkness was complete and the silence was total. This was the end of the hope for the ten brides. They were gone and they were never coming back. The Prince was left to face his fate all by himself in the shadows. He had no friends left. He had no help. He had no light to see by. He was just a lost soul in a dark place. He was cold. He was hungry. He was scared. He was crying. He was waiting. He was a king who had no kingdom. He was a son who had no friends. He was a man who had no name. He was a beast who had no home. The night was long and the rain was cold and the wind was loud. The palace was a cage and the room was a prison and the darkness was a blanket. There was no song in the air tonight. There was no joy in the hearts of men. There was only the shadow of the man who used to be a prince. Was there no one left in all of Omalin who saw the human being beneath the madness?
