My Mother-in-Law Hates Me, Episode 9

Linda stood for a few minutes, staring at her mother-in-law who had collapsed on the floor. Her heart was pounding, but she did not move closer. She felt no pity. “This is the same woman who almost killed me,” she said to herself. “When I was bleeding and crying, she left me to die. Now she has collapsed, and I should run to help her? Never.” Linda turned around and walked to her room. She sat on her bed, breathing heavily. Tears rolled down her face, but they were tears of anger and pain.

Linda looked around her room and thought about everything she had suffered in that house. “That woman never cared about me,” she said aloud. “She beat me, insulted me, and made my life a living hell. Even when I was in the hospital fighting for my life, she didn’t visit me.” She lay back on her bed and stared at the ceiling. “Now she has seen a small part of what I have felt,” she whispered. She felt no guilt. Her heart had become too wounded to care anymore. She was done being weak.

For hours, the old woman remained unconscious in her room. No one went to check on her. The house was silent, except for the ticking of the wall clock. Linda stayed in her room, determined not to interfere. When evening came, she went to the kitchen, ate a little food, and went back to bed. Around midnight, her mother-in-law finally woke up. She was dizzy and weak but conscious. She managed to sit up slowly and rest her back against the wall. Her body ached, but she said nothing. She just stayed in bed till morning.

When Ajulu returned home that night, Linda was waiting for him. Her eyes were red from crying, but her face showed no fear. “Welcome,” she said coldly as he entered the house. Ajulu dropped his bag and sat on a chair. “Where is my mother?” he asked. “In her room,” Linda replied. “She collapsed earlier.” Ajulu jumped up. “Collapsed? What happened?” Linda folded her arms. “Ask her when she wakes up properly. Maybe she will tell you what she has been doing to me since I married you.” Her tone was calm but full of pain.

Ajulu frowned and faced her. “What are you talking about again, Linda? What did you do to my mother this time?” he asked. Linda looked straight at him. “What did I do to your mother? That’s the question I should ask you, Ajulu. Do you really love me, or did you marry me so that your mother can use me as a punching bag? Because since I came into this house, your mother has treated me like a housemaid and an animal. And you always take her side,” she said with trembling hands.

Ajulu hissed and sat back down. “You have started again,” he said. “You don’t listen. You are lazy and disrespectful. That’s why my mother doesn’t like you. If you behaved like a good wife, she would treat you well. You are the one who is bringing problems into this house. I’m tired of your constant complaints.” Linda’s eyes widened in disbelief.

“Ajulu, are you even hearing yourself? After everything your mother did to me, you still call me lazy?” she asked. Ajulu ignored her completely and started pressing his phone as if she wasn’t there.

Linda’s voice broke as she continued talking. “I have tried, Ajulu. I have done everything a good wife should do. I cook, I clean, I endure insults, I beg, and I cry every day in this house. Yet, you still don’t see my pain. You stand by your mother and watch her destroy me slowly.” Ajulu raised his head slightly.

“I don’t want to hear all these stories tonight. You always exaggerate things,” he said. Linda looked at him and shook her head sadly. “You are truly blinded by your mother,” she whispered.

She walked to the window and looked outside into the dark night. The wind blew softly, carrying the smell of rain. Her mind was full of confusion and anger.

“I can’t continue like this,” she said to herself quietly. Then she turned around and faced her husband.

“I know exactly what to do. My husband and his mother can’t continue to treat me like trash,” she said in a firm voice. Ajulu looked at her but said nothing. He did not know that for the first time, Linda had made up her mind to fight back.
