My Mother-in-Law Hates Me Episode 10

Linda woke up very early that morning. Her heart was calm, but her mind was made up. She sat on the edge of her bed and looked around the room where she had cried so many times. She had decided that she would not die in that house. She stood up, opened her wardrobe, and started packing her clothes into a small traveling bag. Her hands shook as she folded each dress. “Enough is enough,” she said softly. “I have endured more than any woman should. I will leave today and never look back.”

As Linda was packing, her mother-in-law came into the room. The old woman’s face was full of anger as usual. “What is this nonsense I am seeing? Where do you think you are going?” she shouted. Linda did not look at her. She continued folding her clothes.

“Mama, you can now rest. You can now look for another woman to become your punching bag. I’m leaving this house today.” The old woman hissed and clapped her hands. “You are mad! You will not go anywhere!” she shouted. But Linda only zipped her bag and stood firm.

Ajulu, who was in the sitting room, heard the noise and rushed in. “What is happening here again?” he asked. Linda turned to him. “Nothing new. Your mother has started again. But this time, I’m not staying to fight. I’m leaving this house for both of you,” she said. Ajulu frowned.

“You are not serious, Linda. You can’t just wake up and leave your marriage because of small misunderstanding.” Linda laughed bitterly. “Small misunderstanding? I lost my baby because of your mother’s beating, and you call it small misunderstanding?”

The room suddenly went quiet. Ajulu’s eyes widened. His mother looked away. Linda dropped her bag on the bed and faced them. “Do you know what it feels like to lose your unborn child? To cry alone in the hospital with nobody to care? Your mother did that to me. Even you did not visit me. She beat me, and I lost my baby. And she didn’t even visit me!” Linda’s voice broke as she spoke. The old woman tried to look bold, but her hands were shaking.

“You think I should stay here and die, Mama?” Linda said angrily.

The old woman sighed deeply and sat down. “Since you have already said everything, let me tell you the truth,” she said slowly. “I never liked you, Linda. I wanted you to leave this house. That’s why I treated you that way. My son was already married before you came. The woman he married first is the one I love. She is the one meant for this house.” Linda gasped.

“What are you saying, Mama?” she asked in disbelief. “Ask your husband,” the old woman said coldly, pointing at Ajulu.

Linda turned to Ajulu, her eyes filled with confusion. “Ajulu, is it true? Tell me your mother is lying.” Ajulu rubbed his head nervously. “Linda, please calm down. Let me explain,” he said.

“Yes, I married another woman before you. It happened secretly. I didn’t want to hurt you because we had dated for a long time. I felt sorry for you, so I still went ahead to marry you. The woman I married first already has a child for me.” Linda stood still as tears ran down her cheeks.

Linda looked at both of them in silence. Her voice shook when she finally spoke. “So all this while, you both planned to frustrate me until I leave?” Ajulu looked down. “It was not like that. I just thought if you left on your own, it would be easier for everyone,” he said quietly. Linda wiped her tears and picked up her bag. “You are both wicked,” she said. “You made me believe I was the problem, while you were hiding a big secret.” She turned to the door, her heart burning with pain.

Linda left the house that same day. She didn’t look back, even when Ajulu’s mother shouted after her. When she reached her father’s house, her mother came out quickly to welcome her. “Linda, what happened? Why are you crying?” she asked. Linda dropped her bag and hugged her tightly. “Mama, I didn’t know my husband didn’t marry me because of love. He only married me because he pitied me. I’m glad I have ended that marriage,” she said in tears. Her mother held her and said softly, “Don’t cry again, my daughter. You are free now.”

The End.
