Husband To Two Wives Episode Three

“Young lady, please, explain yourself. I have heard what my husband said about you. He said he got married to last week. He said he married you in the traditional way. He has said it openly that you are the one he truly loves. My dear husband has made it known that it was his mother that forced him to marry me and he married you for himself. I want to confirm that what he is saying is true. I want to confirm that you were properly married by him. I would like to hear from you first because I’m about to take a drastic action. I don’t want to deal with you and then later find out that you are innocent. So, my question is: are you married to my husband?” Ife asked.

“Yes, Femi is my husband. He has dated me for five years. When he brought me to this house for introduction, his mother said she did not like me. I wondered what I did wrong because I’m a very humble person and I was ready to be a good wife to him.

However, his mother spoke to me in a way that made me feel hurt. I decided that I was not going to leave Femi for any woman to married. How can a man date me for five years and then abandon me simply because his mother does not like me? I was 25 years when I met Femi. He promised to marry me. I rejected other men who came to marry me and stayed with him, hoping that one day, I would become his wife. I was shocked when his mother said I was not good enough for her son. She told him to dump me. I refused to be dumped. He can’t meet me when I’m 25 and dump me at the age of 30 when I have passed my prime,” Wunmi said. She did not behave as if she was scared.

“You are talking as if you forced him to marry you. Was the marriage based on love or you forced him to marry you because he has dated you for five years?” Ife asked again. She was interrogating Wunmi like a police officer investigating a crime.

“I did not force him to marry me. He also loves me. We love each other and we promised ourselves that we were going to get married no matter what his mother said. So, I’m his legally married wife. There is nothing anyone can do about it.” Wunmi said.

“Are you saying you were aware that Femi was engaged to me and you still agreed to be his wife?” Ife asked again.

“Yes, I knew he was engaged to marry you. In fact, I also attended the wedding earlier today before going home to pack my things. I was also aware that it was his mother who chose you for him. He does not love you. I’m the one he loves. You should actually go back to your father’s house. You have married the wrong man. I’m the only true wife in this house. You are fake because before you came, I was already here. Even if you decide to stay in this house, you are going to stay as the second wife. I will be the first wife and you will be answerable to me,” Wunmi said. Her words were very painful for Ife.

“Who will be the second wife? Are you dreaming? I’m the only authentic wife in this house. I was engaged to Femi before he married you. You had the audacity to move your property to my husband’s house on my wedding day. If you don’t leave this house this moment, I will teach you a lesson you will never forget,” Ife shouted. Femi and his mother were stilled there. They were listening to them. Occasionally, Femi tried to stop them from exchanging words but he failed. He blamed his mother for what was happening but his mother also blamed him for bringing another woman to the house on his wedding day.

“I’m not going anywhere. If anyone is to leave this house, you would be the one. You cannot chase me away from my husband’s house. You are the visitor. He married me ever before he thought of even going to see your parents. I have slept in this room for five years. I have slept with Femi for five years. He has slept with me for five years, so I’m not going to leave him for you. You are the newcomer. It’s either you stay as a second wife you leave the house entirely,” Wunmi shouted.

“Are you telling me to my face that you have been sleeping with my husband? Are you saying you have been sleeping with a married man? What kind of woman are you? You are here to steal my husband but I will not allow that to happen,” Ife responded with anger.

“Yes, I have been sleeping with Femi. Even his mother is aware that I have been sleeping with him. In fact, I have been sleeping with him even before he ever came to know you. If you don’t like it, you can do whatever you think you can do,” Wunmi thundered back. Ife raised her hand and landed Wunmi a hot slap. But she was shocked when Wunmi landed her five slaps. They started fighting.

Femi and his mother went to separate the fight but they failed. As the fight was going on, Ife picked an empty bottle of soft drink from the floor. Her intention was to smas’h it on Wunmi’s head, but when she raised her hand, the bottle landed on the head of Femi’s mother. The old woman shouted and fell on the ground. The fight stopped immediately. They touched Femi’s mother and called her name but she did not respond and she was not moving.
