Waiting for a Rich Man Episode 8

Uche tried to stay focused on his studies, but his heart was no longer at peace. His relationship with Amaka had grown stronger. They studied together, ate together, and walked around campus after lectures. Amaka was funny, smart, and very beautiful. She made him laugh, and he enjoyed being around her. Even though he knew it was wrong, he couldn’t stop himself from spending more time with her. He missed his wife and child, but campus life felt lonely. Having someone close made it easier to bear. But deep inside, he knew he was walking on dangerous ground.

Uche often found himself comparing Amaka and Sonia. He knew Sonia was the reason he was even in school. She paid his fees, bought his books, and still managed the business without complaints. She never missed a day without calling or texting to check on him. She even sent him foodstuff and clothes. Yet, he kept going back to Amaka. He kept telling himself that it was just friendship. But he knew it was more than that. Sometimes he felt ashamed, but other times, he felt he deserved to enjoy life too after all the suffering he had faced before.

Amaka, on the other hand, was growing fond of Uche. She liked that he was mature and hardworking. She had never met a man who spoke gently and listened to her like Uche did. She also admired how serious he was with his studies. She didn’t know much about his wife. Uche hardly spoke about his home life. He only said he was married but never gave details. Amaka didn’t ask many questions. She just liked the way she felt when he was around. She began to treat him like her boyfriend even though nothing physical had happened between them.

One quiet afternoon, Amaka invited Uche to her room in the female hostel. She said she wasn’t feeling well and wanted him to help her revise a few things for their upcoming test. Uche hesitated but later agreed. He told himself he would just read with her and go back to his hostel. When he arrived, she welcomed him with a smile and gave him a drink. They opened their books and began reading. After a while, Amaka closed her book and leaned closer. She said she liked him. Uche didn’t say anything. Then, slowly, she moved closer and ki.ssed him.

The kiss didn’t last long, but it shook Uche deeply. It was soft, warm, and real. For a few seconds, he forgot everything else. He forgot about Sonia and their child. He forgot about the Akara business and the house in Lekki. But once the moment passed, guilt rushed into his heart. He stood up and said he needed to go. Amaka looked at him and asked if she had done anything wrong. Uche said no. He said he just needed to clear his head. Amaka nodded slowly. Uche left her room in silence, feeling lost and confused.

That night, Uche could not sleep. He lay on his bed staring at the ceiling. His phone beeped. It was a message from Sonia. She said she had just transferred more money for his textbooks. She told him how much she missed him and how their son had started crawling. Uche read the message several times. He felt tears in his eyes. He had betrayed the woman who gave up everything to support him. Sonia believed in him so much. She told her family and friends that her husband was going to be a doctor. She had no idea he was changing.

Meanwhile, Sonia was doing very well in business. The Lekki shop was attracting more customers every day. She had employed more workers and bought another delivery bike. She had even started planning to expand into other parts of Lagos. She was happy and hopeful. Her dream was to build a food brand that would be known across Nigeria. But more than anything, she wanted her husband to succeed in school. She told everyone that her husband would soon be called Doctor Uche. She had already started saving money to support his housemanship after school. She had no idea what was happening.

Back in school, Uche tried to avoid Amaka, but it wasn’t easy. They had classes together, and she often waited for him after lectures. Amaka didn’t bring up the ki.ss again. She acted like everything was normal, but Uche could see the way she looked at him. He still liked her, and every time they were alone, he had to fight the temptation to go further. It was like he was living two lives — one as a serious student with a beautiful female friend, and the other as a husband with a loyal wife working hard to see him succeed.

Uche did well in his tests. He was among the top students in his class. His lecturers praised him for being focused and mature. His future as a doctor was looking bright. But inside him, something was changing. He started feeling distant from Sonia. He didn’t call her as often as before. Sometimes, he would ignore her messages. When she called, he would say he was too busy studying. Sonia believed him and never complained. She always ended her calls with prayers and encouragement. Uche felt like a hypocrite, but he didn’t know how to stop. He had gone too far.

Every day became a battle for Uche. He loved his wife and respected her, but he also enjoyed the attention Amaka gave him. He felt needed by both women in different ways. But he knew it couldn’t continue forever. One day, he would have to choose. He just didn’t know how or when. For now, he tried to focus on his studies and push the thoughts away. But deep in his heart, he feared that the path he was walking would soon lead to a painful end — one he might not be able to fix when the time came.
