Waiting for a Rich Man Episode 9

Uche tried to stay away from Amaka, but one quiet evening, she sent him a message asking him to come over. She said she had something important to tell him. At first, he ignored the message, but after a few minutes, he picked up his bag and walked to her hostel. He told himself that he would only stay for a few minutes and return to his hostel. When he arrived, Amaka welcomed him with a warm hug. She had prepared noodles and eggs. She served him the food, and they sat together, laughing and chatting as if nothing was wrong.

After they finished eating, Amaka told him to stay a little longer. She said she missed his company. Uche smiled, not knowing how to say no. She moved closer and placed her head on his shoulder. Slowly, she touched his hand and whispered into his ears that she liked him very much. Uche looked at her but said nothing. He felt something strong inside him. He knew he shouldn’t be there, but it was hard to leave. Before he could say anything, Amaka held his hand and led him to her bed. Uche followed quietly, feeling confused and weak.

They sat on the bed together, and Amaka began to touch him gently. Uche tried to resist, but his body was already reacting. He told her that he shouldn’t be doing that, but she smiled and said it was okay. She ki.ssed him and started removing his shirt. Uche allowed her. They continued touching and cuddling. Soon, he was no longer thinking clearly. Everything was happening so fast. Amaka climbed on the bed fully, pulling him with her. Uche was already lost in the moment. He wanted to stop but had no strength. It felt like he had crossed the line.

Just before the real thing was about to happen, Uche’s phone rang loudly. He quickly sat up. Amaka looked disappointed. Uche reached for the phone. It was his wife. He hesitated for a second before answering. “Hello, sweetheart,” Sonia said cheerfully. “Please can you come home? I have something for you.” Uche rubbed his eyes. “Is everything okay?” he asked. Sonia laughed. “Today is your birthday, my husband. Have you forgotten?” Uche froze. He had completely forgotten. “I bought a gift for you,” she continued. “Please come.” Uche said he was on his way and ended the call immediately.

He stood up quickly and began to dress. Amaka looked confused. “Where are you going?” she asked. “My wife is waiting,” Uche replied. “It’s my birthday.” Amaka folded her arms. “So, you’ll just leave like that?” Uche didn’t respond. He picked up his bag and walked out of the room. As he walked down the hostel corridor, his heart beat fast. He felt ashamed. If not for the phone call, he would have cheated on his wife. The thought of it made him feel sick. He vowed never to return to Amaka’s room again. He had gone too far already.

Uche took a taxi to the house. On the way, he kept thinking about Sonia. She had done so much for him, yet he almost betrayed her. He remembered how she stood by him when he had nothing, how she used her own hands to build a business that now paid his school fees. His eyes filled with tears. He realized he had been foolish. No matter how lonely he felt at school, he had no excuse for what he almost did. He promised himself that he would never let Sonia down again. He would focus on school and finish strong.

When Uche arrived home, Sonia was waiting for him at the gate. She smiled brightly and hugged him. “Happy birthday, my love,” she said. “Thank you,” Uche replied quietly. “Come, I want to show you something.” She held his hand and led him to the side of the house. Uche was shocked when he saw a brand-new car parked there. It was clean and shining. “This is your gift,” Sonia said proudly. “You’ve worked hard, and I want you to know how proud I am of you.” Uche stood there, speechless. He touched the car gently and looked at his wife.

Tears rolled down Uche’s cheeks. He didn’t know what to say. He hugged Sonia tightly and whispered, “Thank you. I don’t deserve you.” Sonia laughed. “Don’t say that. You’re my husband, and I’ll always support you.” They went inside the house, and she brought out a small cake. Their son crawled around the living room, smiling and clapping. It was a simple celebration, but it touched Uche deeply. He remembered the life they had in the one-room apartment, the hunger, and the struggles. Things had changed, and it was all because Sonia refused to give up. She believed in their future.

That night, Uche couldn’t sleep. He lay on the bed beside Sonia and watched her sleep peacefully. He realized that love was not just about feelings or attraction. It was about sacrifice, support, and commitment. Sonia had shown him what true love looked like. He had almost destroyed it with one wrong decision. He made a promise to himself and to God. From that day forward, he would focus on his studies, support his wife, and be a better husband. He would stop seeing Amaka and stay away from anything that could break his home. He had learned his lesson.

The next morning, Uche sent a message to Amaka. He thanked her for her friendship but told her that they could no longer see each other alone. He explained that he wanted to stay faithful to his wife. Amaka didn’t reply. Uche felt sad, but he knew he had done the right thing. He went back to campus with a clear mind. He focused on his lectures and assignments. Whenever he missed home, he looked at the picture of his wife and son on his phone. He knew he had something special, and he would protect it with all his heart.
