Waiting for a Rich Man Episode 7
Sonia sat on the sofa one evening and looked at her husband. Uche had helped grow the Akara and bread business, and now they were living well. But she wanted more for him. She knew he was smart and hardworking, and she felt he deserved a chance to chase his old dreams. So, she brought up a new idea. She told Uche she wanted him to return to school. At first, he was surprised. Sonia explained that their business was stable, and it was time for him to do something for himself. Uche sat quietly, thinking deeply about the suggestion.
Uche had only a WAEC certificate. He had passed it many years ago with good grades. His dream had always been to become a doctor, but his parents were too poor to sponsor him. School became a forgotten dream. Now, years later, his wife was offering him a second chance. It touched his heart. He looked at her and smiled. He agreed to try. He said he had never forgotten how much he wanted to wear a white coat and help sick people. It was finally possible.
The next day, Sonia helped him register for a pre-degree program that would lead to a degree in medicine. Uche studied hard every night. He took lessons, solved past questions, and read books. He was nervous at first, but Sonia kept encouraging him. On the day of the entrance exam, she followed him to the gate and prayed for him. When the results came out, Uche had passed. He was offered admission into a private university to study medicine. Sonia was so happy that she cried. They celebrated quietly at home. It felt like they were starting another journey together.
When school resumed, Uche packed his things and moved into the school hostel. Sonia wanted him to focus fully on his studies. She promised to handle the business while he was away. Uche was excited but also nervous. It had been years since he sat in a classroom. On his first day, he walked around the campus and took pictures. Everything looked new and beautiful. The buildings were bright, the lawns were green, and students walked around with confidence. Uche felt out of place at first, but after attending a few classes, he started to feel like he truly belonged there.
In his first week, Uche met many people. Some students were from rich families, while others were on scholarships. Most of them were younger than him, but they didn’t mind his age. They liked that he was mature and focused. He joined a study group and started making friends. One afternoon, he met a beautiful girl named Amaka. She was tall, fair-skinned, and always cheerful. She smiled at him during a class, and they started talking after the lecture. She said she liked the way he answered questions in class. They exchanged numbers and began chatting almost every evening after school.
Amaka was in her second year and studying pharmacy. She told Uche she respected people who came back to school after many years. She admired his story and his drive. Uche found himself thinking about her often. She was friendly, smart, and full of life. Sometimes, she brought snacks for him during long lectures. Uche tried to stay focused, but he couldn’t deny the fact that he liked her. She laughed at his jokes and always asked about his day. It felt good to be around her. For the first time in years, Uche felt a strange excitement in his heart.
One evening, after class, Amaka invited Uche to join her for dinner at a small café near the school gate. She said she just wanted to relax and talk outside class. Uche hesitated at first. He remembered Sonia and their baby at home. But Amaka insisted. She said it was just food and nothing serious. Uche agreed and followed her. They sat under a small umbrella and ordered rice and chicken. They talked about school, their dreams, and life in Lagos. Amaka laughed a lot. Uche found himself enjoying her company. It felt like he was a different person for a moment.
After the dinner, Amaka thanked him for coming and asked if they could do it again sometime. Uche nodded. As he walked back to the hostel, his heart was heavy. He didn’t know what to think. He loved his wife, and she had given him everything. But now, he had met someone who made him feel young again. He felt guilty but also confused. He didn’t want to lie or cheat, but he also didn’t want to hurt Amaka. She had done nothing wrong. He stayed up late that night, thinking about everything. He didn’t know what to do next.
Back at home, Sonia was busy managing the two branches of the business. She missed her husband but was proud of him. She often sent him money for books and other school needs. She didn’t suspect anything. She believed Uche was focused on his studies. She told her friends that she was willing to wait for him, no matter how long it took. She believed in education and wanted her husband to succeed. Every night, she prayed for him and hoped he was doing well. She had no idea that another woman had started taking up space in her husband’s heart.
Uche woke up the next morning, still confused. He knew he had to make a choice. School was not just about books. It had brought new challenges he never expected. He didn’t want to lose his marriage, but he didn’t know how to end things with Amaka without hurting her. She was kind and genuine. He decided to give himself time and focus more on his studies. Maybe things would change. Maybe he would find the strength to stay true to the woman who believed in him when he had nothing. But for now, he was walking a dangerous path.
