The Dying Billionaire Episode 4
Chief Omenka didn't tell anyone the name of the new hospital where the DNA test would happen. This time, he didn't even handle the arrangement himself. He told his lawyer to take charge of everything. The lawyer was the only person who knew the new technician and the name of the lab. Chief said nothing to Ebube or Dike. He only told them to follow him to the hospital for the final test. The cancer had taken most of his strength, but he said he must be present when the sample would be taken. He wanted to see everything for himself.
They all entered the lawyer's car and left the hospital that morning. It was quiet inside the car. No one said anything. Chief Omenka sat at the back beside Dike while Ebube stayed in front. The lawyer drove in silence. Ebube looked around but could not recognize the road. She didn't know where they were going. Even when they arrived at the hospital, she didn't recognize the name. Everything was well-planned. There was no chance to stop anything this time. Ebube followed them inside the lab with a disturbed face.
"Trouble is coming for me and my son. This time, I might not be able to escape what is coming." Ebube said.
As soon as they got into the lab, the technician welcomed them and explained how the test would go. Chief nodded quietly. The technician collected samples from Chief Omenka and from Dike. This time, the lawyer stood beside the technician and watched everything. Ebube tried to walk close to the technician, but the lawyer blocked her. She stood aside and watched. There was no time to plan or whisper anything.
This was the end of her game. The whole test process did not take more than 30 minutes.
The technician asked them to return in two hours for the result. Chief said they would wait inside the lab. He didn't want to go back and come again. He didn't want to take chances.
Ebube and Dike also sat quietly. The lawyer left
them for some minutes and returned with soft
drinks and snacks. But no one touched it. Two
hours passed slowly. When the technician came
out with the brown envelope, Chief asked him to
read the result inside the lab. The man opened it
and began to speak.
He said, according to the test result, Chief Omenka was not the biological father of Dike. He showed the papers to everyone in the lab. Ebube looked away. Dike stared at the envelope. Chief asked the technician again, "Are you sure of what you are saying?" The man said yes. Chief turned to his lawyer and asked, "Is this the final result?" The lawyer said yes, that everything was done in his presence and there was no mistake. Chief leaned on the car door and said, "I knew something was wrong all these years." Nobody answered him.
Chief said right there that he was no longer willing to give anything to Dike. He said the will must be changed immediately. He told his lawyer to remove Dike's name from all the documents. Ebube opened her mouth to say something, but Chief raised his hand and told her to keep quiet. "You know what you did. You kept quiet all these years and allowed me to suffer," he said. Then he faced Dike and added, "I don't hate you, but I won't give my wealth to someone who is not my son." Dike sat still, shocked.
Ebube and Dike left the hospital quietly. There was nothing else to say. Chief remained with the lawyer to talk about the new arrangement. Back home, Dike entered the sitting room and asked his mother to tell him the truth. He asked again and again. She sat down on the chair and said yes, the result was correct. She said it was only once that she made that mistake. She said it was during a period when Chief traveled for almost six months. She didn't expect to get pregnant, but it happened. Dike stared at her with anger.
"The most important thing is that I love you as my son no matter what the DND result says." Duke's mother said.
She begged him not to see her as a bad woman. She said it was not easy for her to live with that secret. Dike asked who his real father was, but Ebube said she didn't know where the man was again. Dike stood up and walked away. He didn't say anything else. She called him back, but he didn't return. She sat there, alone in the sitting room, looking at the ceiling. The house that once gave her joy now felt empty. She didn't know what to do next. Chief was already removing them from his life..
Later that night, Ebube called Chief Omenka's phone, but he didn't pick. She tried again and again. The number rang, but he refused to answer. She sent text messages. She even sent a voice note on WhatsApp. Chief didn't reply. Dike didn't return home that night. He didn't say where he was going. He only took his phone and left the house. Ebube stayed in the house alone. She thought about her son, her husband, and everything that had happened. She knew she had finally lost everything. But she had no one to blame but herself.
Meanwhile as the night became quiet, Chief Omenka lay on his bed, thinking of the life he had lived. He remembered when he married Ebube. He remembered how happy he was the day Dike was born. He thought about all the love, the years, and the effort he put into raising Dike. Everything felt like a waste now. But he said to himself that it was better to know the truth before he died than to be buried in lies.
The cancer was still there, eating him up slowly, but at least he now knew who truly belonged to him.
