Searching For a Male Child Episode Thirteen
For so many days now, Okenwa have not been eating very well. He does not know how to cook. The only thing he can do well in the kitchen is to boil yam or water. He cannot even prepare noodles. He eats at restaurants, but there are days he is not able to go to restaurants to buy food, so he comes home hungry. He is always busy in his shop. On such days when hunger 'waya him' in the night, Okenwa will quickly go to the kitchen, boil water and make tea. He usually eats the tea with bread. This is why he does not allow bread to finish in the house.
He was coming back from his shop that evening and he decided to branch into a supermarket by the roadside to buy loaves of bread. It was his first time in that particular supermarket. He has been passing there but he has never checked. Okenwa knows that the supermarket is new. When he was passing that side, he decided to buy bread from the supermarket for the first time. Lo and behold, he saw Eberechi immediately he entered the supermarket.
"What are you doing here? Anu mpama!" Okenwa asked Eberechi who was sitting in one corner of the supermarket like the madam of the shop. Many of her sales girls were talking to her in a respectful way and Okenwa was seeing what was happening.
"This is my supermarket. Welcome, what do you want to buy?" Eberechi asked. She was smiling happily even though Okenwa was frowning his face as if he wanted a fight. Eberechi was not ready for that. She just wanted to sell market to Okenwa, collect her money and move on to another person.
"If you are talking to me, talk to me in a respectful way because I'm still your husband. If you disrespect me, I will still prove it to you that I'm the man who paid your bride price and married you. I ask again, what are you doing in this shop? I chased you away from my house, you should be in your father's house." Okenwa said angrily.
"Lols." Eberechi said as she laughed. She was chewing gum and using it to blow bubbles like a teenager.
"I'm talking to you and your are chewing gum?
Do you want me to change it for you? I will show you pepper right now if you don't tell me what you are doing here." Okenwa shouted.
"Ewo! This man is serious o!" Eberechi said sarcastically and started laughing again.
"Oga, the supermarket belongs to me. That is why I'm here. She said.
"Where did you see money to open supermarket? Did you steal my money? So you have been stealing my money and saving it small small? You gathered up everything and opened a supermarket. Well, I'm here to take over. Thank God I came here to buy bread, if not, I wouldn't have known you stole my money and invested it in a supermarket business. This place is now mine. I will show you that I have power in this estate." Okenwa shouted. Some shoppers were hearing his voice.
"I also saw what you did in my daughter's school yesterday. She won a big prize and you purposely removed my name as the surname. You instructed her to remove my name and use your own as the surname. I'm still her father. I don't need to remind you that all my children should continue to answer my name even though they are no longer living with me. My children still remain my children and they should continue to answer my name in school. They should carry my name wherever they go. If they win awards, my name should be mentioned there as their father. When they do well in school, I should be mentioned as their father. How can my first child win an award and there was no mention of my name? When I saw you people in the news yesterday, my heart tear into two. Thank God I have seen you here. I want to warn you not to remove my name as my children's surname. If you do it, I will teach you a lesson." Okenwa said with anger in his voice.
"What if I don't do it? What are you going to do to me? I thought you said you don't want the children? Why do you now want them to answer your name?" Eberechi asked with laughter.
"I have told you. I will not repeat this warning. Make sure what happened yesterday does not happen again. You will not like what I will do if you dare stop my children from answering my name." He said.
"But you chased her out of your house. You said you don't want the children and now, you are saying you want them to answer your name. That is not possible. You cannot eat your cake and have it." Alozie said from behind. He too had come to the supermarket to buy something and he has been hearing Okenwa's voice.
Okenwa turned to look at Alozie.
"I saw you on TV with my wife yesterday. You don't have the right to be moving around with another man's wife. Stay away from her and stay away from my family. I will just take it that you went there to celebrate with my daughter, but if it happens again, I will show you my true colour." Ok new said.
"You don't have any true colour. You are just a shameless man. I know you are now regretting that you abandoned your wife and children, but it is already too late. You cannot have them back. I know what you want to do. You want to beg her to come back, but your pride cannot even allow you to do that. That is why you are threatening Eberechi. But any day you touch her, you will have me to contend with. Since you think she has no one to stand for her. Be informed that I'm standing up for her. Please, leave the supermarket this moment." Alozie said. He was now angry.
"If I don't leave, what would you do?" Okenwa asked.
"I will push you out." Alozie said. He did not even wait for another response before he started to push Okenwa. He pushed him out of the supermarket. Many people watched and laughed.
"That serves him right." Eberechi said.
