Searching For a Male Child Episode Twelve

Eberechi now has a 10-year-old daughter named Cheta. She was about to finish from primary school and to proceed to secondary school.

Cheta is the most intelligent girl in her class.

She is so intelligent that she always comes first in every examination. From primary one, she has been taking first position in all the examinations she sat for. Cheta is very good at mathematics and this has made her very popular in the school. The whole school knows her because of her intelligence. She has said she would like to become a pilot when she grows up.

An international organization had come to Cheta's school and they were looking for a brilliant young mind to sponsor for scholarships. They were particularly interested in children who are doing well in mathematics. Anyone selected would be given scholarships from secondary school to the university level. But they must first sit for a difficult examination. Only one person will be selected from the school. It was a stiff competition because there were many other students from

other classes who were equally very good at mathematics and they were interested in capturing the big prize. However, Cheta was ready to win.

"Mummy, I will not put you to shame. I will not fail to prove that having a girl child is a blessing. I know what my father has done to you because of us. I might be a child but I have been watching you suffer in the hands of my father because all your children are girls. My father thinks we are useless, but I have made up my mind to prove him wrong. He must be made to understand that it is not only male children that can make their parents proud. It is not only male children that can answer a man's name. I'm going to win and make you proud. And I will make sure my father does not benefit from my success." Cheta tells her mother that morning when she was preparing to go for the mathematics competition.

"I know you will protect me. I'm so proud of you and how far you have grown in wisdom. I have always known you to be a wise girl. I know you will make me proud today. Please, be strong in the competition. I will be right in your school to support you. I will not go to the supermarket today. Today is your day. I will not only follow you to school, but I will also stay there until the mathematics competition is over so that I will hear the result." Eberechi said to his daughter.

Eberechi was so happy that her daughter is growing up into a wise girl. Although she was still very young at the age of 10, she has witnessed a lot in the family and the things she saw made her tough. She knows her mother is a good woman and she was aware of all that her father did. She saw everything herself. She had vowed to standby her mother.

That morning, Eberechi called an Uber driver who came to the house and picked them up for school. When they were dropped off, she stayed back to witness the competition. Although, she was not allowed to enter the examination hall, she stayed outside and waited for her daughter who went into the hall courageously.

The examination took so long. It started in the morning around 8am and it lasted until 11am. At some points, Eberechi became tired. She went to the school restaurant to eat. She ate fried rice and chicken. After eating, she stayed at the restaurant until the examination was over. Suddenly, she got a call from Alozie.

"You told me your daughter is supposed to go for a mathematics completion today. I'm so sorry, I forgot, I would have come in the morning to take you people to school myself. Are you still there? I want to come to the school to meet you. I want to be there to support you and your daughter. I'm very sure she will win and she will be selected for the scholarship offer." Alozie said Eberechi. She was surprised that Alozie called to check on her and even wanted to come to the school to be with her.

"Yes, I'm still at the school. The exam is still going on. But I heard it will soon end. It is computer-based and the result will come out immediately. I will wait until they announce the result." Eberechi tells Alozie.

"Okay, I will be on my way." Alozie said. He picked his car keys and started driving to the school to meet with Eberechi and her daughter. When he got there, he found his way to the school's restaurant where he saw Eberechi sitting and waiting for her daughter to come out from the examination hall.

"Thank you for coming. I'm so glad you could make it. I have always dreamt of a day someone would accompany me to somewhere.

Do you know that I don't have any friends apart from you? In fact, my husband has only come to this school once since we enrolled our children here. He does not care about anything that has to do with the children's education." Eberechi said.

"I will always stand by you. You are a good woman and you don't deserve all your husband did to you." Alozie said. Soon, Cheta came out from the hall. She had come to call her mother.

"They said all parents should come into the examination hall now. They want to announce the result." Cheta said after greeting her mother and Alozie. Eberechi and Alozie followed Cheta to the examination hall. Shortly, the white people who organized the competition came to the stage to announce the result.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we thank you all for your patients. We thank all parents who spared time to wait for their children. After final analysis, we are pleased to announce that Eberechi Cheta has won the mathematics competition and she will receive a N50 million worth of scholarship to study from secondary school until she becomes a pilot. She will go to any school of her choice in any country free of charge and her parents won't have to pay any money." The Oyinbo man making the announcement said.

When Eberechi heard the news, she jumped up from her seat and started jubilating. She hugged Alozie and hugged her daughter. Television reporters were there to interview them. The news went viral. Cheta, Eberechi and Alozie were shown in the news later in the evening.

When Okenwa saw it, he was so mad. He was angry that Chat did not use his name as surname.

"She used her mother's name as her surname. Why will she call herself "Eberechi Cheta" instead of "Okenwa Cheta?" I will look for her mother tomorrow and confront her. I'm sure she is the one who instructed her to do this. And I will also want to know that man who was there with her. I'm still her husband and she has no right to take another man to my daughter's event. My name was not even mentioned there at all, and I'm the father of the child that won a big prize. Eberechi will hear from me tomorrow." Okenea said.
