Surviving in Canada Episode Four
It is always a difficult burden to bear whenever we are betrayed by someone we trust. Sometimes, it is the person you love that hurts you the most. This was what happened to Ekaette. First, she trusted Dr Williams so much that she gave him N15 million to relocate to Canada. Her aim was that as her husband, he would come to Canada, make money and come back to pick her and her children so that the family would have a better future. But Dr Williams forgot about her and her two children after he relocated and became successful.
Even after that, she still believed that her relationship with her husband can still be rescued if only she could see him face to face. She still trusted that there is somewhere in Dr William's heart that still remembers her and their two young children. She believed that all hopes were not lost so far as Dr Williams was still alive. She was ready to forgive him if only she would find him. She was ready for the family to reunite again. She was ready to allow 'bygones to be bygones. But what hit her as she entered Dr Williams' compound wasn't what she expected. It was as if someone gave her a hot slap. She was emotionally shattered due to what the pregnant Oyinbo woman said.
Had it been that the Oyinbo woman was not pregnant, Ekaette would have started fighting with her. This is because she could not believe that someone else was laying claim to her husband. She could not believe that another woman was threatening to call the police on her simply became she came to her husband's house to ask after him. She was so embarrassed. However, Ekaette decided to maintain decorum. There was no need to fight. She decided to maintain peace and civility. But at least, she has mouth and she could talk.
"I don't know if I heard you well or not, because you are speaking through your nose. You know I'm from Nigeria and I don't used to understand posh English or 'supiri supiri'. But According what I understand, you are saying that Dr Williams, who is my husband is actually married to you? What you were saying is that he is your husband or that you are his mistress? When you said he is married to you, did you mean you people went to court and signed marriage papers or you people did shortcut marriage?" Ekeatte asked with sarcasm.
"What do you mean by shortcut marriage?" The Oyinbo woman asked. She did not quiet understand the Nigeria slang.
"Shortcut marriage means when a man got a woman pregnant during boyfriend and girlfriend game and then he decides to look after you until you give birth, and then you will pack your load and go to your parents' house. Was that what you people did? Are you properly married to him or he is just using you to stretch his waist in the night?" Ekaette asked.
"Of course we are properly married. We got married properly in court. That's why I'm shocked that you are calling him your husband. Do you want to snatch him from me?" The Oyinbo woman asked angrily. She was becoming agitated and her voice was going up due to her anger.
"Who is talking about snatching? You have already snatched him from me. If you are married to Dr Williams, it means you are married to my husband. You married another woman's husband and I think you are the one who snatched him from me. He must have told you a lot of lies that he was not married. You did not do you findings well before you said yes to him and collected his ring. Now, you are here running mouth like tap water and asking me if I want to collect your husband. You have collected him from me. I should be asking you why you collected my husband. Why did you snatch my husband?" Ekaette said. She was so angry but she felt helpless that she cannot fight with a pregnant woman.
"If not for this pregnancy, I would have shown you that I'm a market woman from Uyo. I would have shown you the difference between egbe and egbe. I would have shown you how we used to do it in Nigeria. I would have removed my blows no and shown you my short nicker. Me and you would have put leg in one trouser. I would have shown you the difference between a market woman and an ajebota like you. I would have used better slap to design that your 'poko poko' face. You would have seen my true colour. You would have seen my red eyes. You would have seen pepper. I would have shown you shege. But you are lucky that you are pregnant. I will respect that baby in your belly. Now, enter inside and call the foolish man who abandoned me and married you." Ekaette said. It was like a military order.
The Oyinbo woman felt rattled. First of all, she didn't understand many of the things that Ekaette was saying using Nigerian slangs, so she felt intimidated. Also, she was put on the defensive when Ekaette insisted that she has snatched Dr Williams from her. She was really afraid of Ekaette when she refused to back down. She went inside and called Dr Williams.
"There is a woman here looking for you." The Oyinbo lady said to Dr Williams who was in his room scrolling through his phone.
"Who is the woman?" The doctor asked, but the Oyinbo lady did not answer her. She just stormed out of the room in anger. Dr Charles followed her closely. When he got to the door where Ekaette was standing with her children, he froze in shock. He did not know whether he should run or if he should disappear. He never expected in his wildest dreams that Ekaette could summon the courage to come to Canada to look for him. He almost fainted when he saw Ekaette and their two children stand right there before him. He didn't know what to do. His Oyinbo wife was standing and watching. She wanted to see what would happen next.
As soon as Ekaette's two children saw their father, they recognized him. Although they were very small when he left them, they know him through his pictures which Ekaette hung in their living room in Nigeria. They ran to meet him shouting "daddy daddy we miss you. Why did you abandon us? Our friends used to laugh at us."
