Surviving in Canada Episode Five

The atmosphere in Dr Williams' house was super charged like the engine of a hot car that has traveled several kilometers without stopping. Everyone in the room was emotional.

Everyone there wanted to see the next move.

Everyone wanted to know what would happen next. Ekaette wanted to hear from her husband.

The Oyinbo woman wanted to hear from Dr Williams while Ekaette's children wanted to be pampered by their father who they have not seen for a 10 years. Dr Williams is now the man in the eye of the storm. Everyone looked at him to hear what he would say.

For about one minute, he was just there beside the door, looking at Ekaette and wondering what to do to her. He has always known Ekaette to be a very determined woman. She would never give up on what she wants to achieve, but he never knew she would one day come to Canada to look for him. Coming to Canada to look for him was a new level of courage. It was never expected, but here he was, standing face to face with Ekaette, still looking as beautiful as ever. Dr Williams looked at Ekaette and wished he could rush and embrace her. He has missed her and the children so much. But within his heart, Dr Williams decided not to accept his wife or the children. If he accepts them, his marriage with the Oyinbo woman will scatter. So, as Ekaette's children ran to embrace Dr Williams, he pushed them back with strong anger. He rejected them and denied knowing them.

"Daddy we missed you while we were in Nigeria. We missed you so much. Why did you leave us and disappear for so long? It was just like we don't have a father." Ekaette's children said as they embraced Dr Williams. But he pushed them and they both fell on the floor.

"Who is your father? Who told you I'm your daddy? The person lied to you. I'm not your daddy and I was not the one who left you people in Nigeria. I was never married before coming to Canada. I have my Oyinbo wife here and she is pregnant. I couldn't have been married to anyone else. The only woman I'm married to is the beautiful Oyinbo damsel standing here. I don't know you people. We are not related at all. Go and look for the person who gave birth to you because I'm not the person." Dr Williams said angrily. He dragged the children to the door and dumped them outside.

"I told you this is not the man you were looking for. You are in the wrong address but you didn't listen to me. This man here is married to me. He has never been married to any other woman. I was shocked when you said my husband is your husband. Please, I don't want to hear that again from your mouth. My husband is not your husband. I can never share my man with you. He came to Canada and worked hard to become successful. He got married to me in the proper way. You cannot just come from nowhere to claim he was married to you in Nigeria. Please, you people should leave our house." The Oyinbo wife said. She was talking and threatening Ekaette who was just standing there, too shocked to say anything.

"Exactly! My Oyinbo wife is right. You people should check the address given to you properly. I'm not sure you have come to the right house. This house has only one wife and I have never been married to any other woman. This Oyinbo woman is the only wife I know. In fact, she was the first woman I have ever touched in the bedroom. Why are you telling lies against me? You wanted to use your lies to destroy my family? Please, leave this place and never come back. If I ever see you and your children here again, I will call the police on you. You will be arrested and jailed. Remember, this is Canada. This is not Nigeria where you people behave anyhow. Please, take your children and leave. I'm not your husband and I'm not your children's father." Dr Williams said.

Deep down in his heart, Dr Williams knows she was the one telling lies. He knows Ekaette is his wife. He recognized the children as his own. He remembered how Ekaette sacrificed everything and counted N15 million and gave it to him when he had no money to relocate abroad. He remembered how he collected the money in Nigeria and embraced his wife that fateful day.

He remembered he promised Ekaette that he was going to return to Nigeria after one year and pick her and the children. He remembered all the promises he made. He did not forget anything and he did not suffer memory loss. He was successful and healthy and he remembered every single detail. He knew what he was supposed to do but he was not man enough to face the truth. Inwardly, he was ashamed of himself.

Instead, what Dr Williams did was to go and hug his Oyinbo wife. He hugged her tightly in the presence of Ekaette. He knows the consequences of divorce in Oyinbo man's country. He knows that if the Oyinbo woman files a divorce case against him, he might lose everything. If the Oyinbo woman discovered the truth, there will be real 'kasala.' He was so scared, so he was trying to avoid that.

"I said you people should leave. Leave my house because I'm about to call the police. If I call the police, you will be arrested. You don't want to be in police net. Please, go back to wherever you were coming from." Dr Williams shouted.

As he was talking, he came to the door to push

Ekaette. As he was pushing her, the children he

had with the Oyinbo woman also joined him.

They were pushing Ekaette's children out of the

house. They chased Ekaette and her children

until they were thrown out of the compound.

Ekaette and her children were crying. Her tears were plenty enough to fill ten buckets. They sat by the roadside to weep.
