Surviving in Canada Episode Two

Ekaette got to the hotel that night knowing that after that day, she and her children will not be allowed to stay there again. They only paid for two days and their time has almost elapsed.

They were expected to leave the hotel apartment the next day by 12 noon. She was very worried because she did not have enough money to pay even for another day. All the money she had was spent on getting visas for herself and for her children. She was hoping that when she finds her husband, he would start paying their bills. However, that did not happen because they were yet to find him.

"If I had known, I would not have embarked on this journey.

I would have remained in Nigeria where I was doing my business. Now, I left my business and I spent all my savings to do visa to bring my children to Canada in search of my husband. It is like all the money I spent was in vain. I have not found my husband and I don't even know where next to go. This is a strange place. I have never been here before and I don't even know who to ask for direction on how to find my husband." Ekaette said in her heart. She was in the toilet of the hotel apartment where she had gone to ease herself. She was weeping.

"This is turning out to be a fruitless journey. I should not have come at all. But I just wanted to do something about my husband's absence. Не cannot just disappear and I will just stay there in Nigeria and fold my hands and do nothing. That is not proper. He remains my husband until death do us path." Ekaette said. She had finished easing herself and she came out. She entered the main room and joined her children who were playing around. The children were carefree and they did not understand what their mother was going through. Ekaette sat in one of the chairs in the room. She was watching her children with pain in her heart. They had just finished eating the food served them by the hotel. Their next meal would be by 8am the next day and that would be the last food they are entitled to at the hotel.

"So, after the last meal, how are we going to survive? How am I going to take care of my children? Where will I see dollars to pay for their food? Also, they will ask us to leave the hotel by 12 noon tomorrow, what am I going to do? Where are we going to sleep? Had it been I have money, we would have flown back to Nigeria instead of staying here and suffering in hunger and homelessness. I hope it doesn't get to that extent of chasing us out of this place. Something has to happen to save us." Ekatte said to herself.

Ekaette grabbed her phone and started searching the internet. She checked "how a stranded Nigerian can survive in Canada." Several information popped up on her phone.

She saw one which directed her to report to the Nigerian Community in Canada if she needed any help or if she was stranded. It was an association of Nigerians living in Canada. There was even a phone number for her to call. She quickly copied the phone number and dialed it. It was already late but she still tried her luck.

Luckily for her, the phone rang and someone picked up. It turned that the number she called was an emergency number which was always on 24/7.

"This is the Nigerian Community in Canada. How may we help you please?" A young man's voice asked.

"My name is Ekaette and I will soon be stranded in Canada if I don't find my husband in a few hours. I flew into Canada yesterday with my two children to look for my husband who we have not seen for the past ten years. I need help in locating him. Please, do you know anyone called Dr Williams Akara?" Ekaette asked.

"Yes, Dr Williams is a popular Nigerian medical doctor here in Canada. You say he is your husband?" The young man asked from the other end of the phone.

"Yes! He got married to me in Nigeria before he relocated to Canada. He has stayed over nine years here without visiting home or even as much as caring to contact us. I was worried, so I say let me come and look for him. I'm happy you said you know him. Please, can you help me to locate him?" Ekaette tells the young man.

"Alright, can you please come to the community's office tomorrow? I will give you the address where you can locate him. He is popular and he is doing so well. Don't tell anyone that I was the one who gave you the address. I want to secretly give you the address because your story is so touching." The young man said.

"I'm so grateful to you. I will never forget this favour you are doing me. I will be there tomorrow." Ekaette said. The young man sent the address of the Nigerian Community in Canada to Ekaette's phone. That night, Ekaette hardly slept. The thought of seeing her husband the next day kept her awake. Each time she closed her eyes, she would be seeing him in the clothes he wore on the day he relocated to Canada. That image never left her head.

As soon as it was daybreak, Ekatte called the young man she spoke with the previous night. The man directed her on how to board a bus. She took her children and they went off to the office address texted to her. They got there and saw the young man. There was not too much talk. He just wrote Dr William's address on a piece of paper and gave it to her and they left. He did not want people to know he was the one who gave out the address. Ordinarily, he was supposed to call Dr Williams and ask for permission, but he didn't. He figured out that Dr Williams did not want his wife to see him, so he was bent on helping Ekaette.

Ekaette hailed a taxi and handed the address to the driver. The taxi zoomed off after she and her children entered the car. Luckily for them, the place was not too far. When the taxi stopped, Ekaette could clearly see the house where her husband lives because the same address on the paper was written on the outer fence of the house. She came down from the taxi with her children followed closely. Her heart was beating very fast.

"Let's go kids. Time to see your father after such a long time." Ekaette said as they approached the gate. In the midst of the storm, she still managed to smile, hoping to see her husband.
