Surviving in Canada Episode One
Williams have lived in Canada now for about ten years. He has lived and worked in Toronto for many years. He is an experienced medical doctor who has made a name for himself in the medical field. He has also won several awards to due to the complicated surgeries he has carried out successfully in the course of his career. Dr Williams trained as a brain surgeon in Nigeria where he graduated with a first class degree. Before he left Nigeria for Canada, he had practised for a few years and gained a little experience. There was no doubt that he has become a successful man in Canada where he was based. Many people know him because of his talent in the medical field.
Dr Williams was married before he left Nigerian for Canada. Already, he was a father of two children before he travelled abroad. However, Dr Williams did not travel with his wife or children. He had told them that he would come back to pick them after he must have settled down in Canada. His wife, Ekaette agreed. She was scared but she still gave her husband the benefit of doubt. She trusted him.
Ten years has passed and Dr Williams did not come back for his family as promised.
Although, in the early days after he relocated, he used to call them very often, but his calls later reduced to once a week, then once a month and then he stopped calling completely. He didn't care much about coming to Nigeria to pick Ekaette and his children. He also stopped sending them money. This was six months after he relocated to Canada. So for over nine years now, Ekaette has been the one suffering to care for the two children because Dr Willimans has essentially abandoned them. It was heartbreaking for Ekaette to be treated that way by her husband.
"This is getting out of hand. I don't know my husband to be an irresponsible man. When he was in Nigeria, he treated me well and cared for the children with all his heart. Why did he suddenly change after relocating to Canada? How can a man stay up to ten years without talking to his wife or even caring for his children and he would be happy? I really want to find out what is going on in my husband's head. I think I have to do something about it." Ekaette said to herself one evening when she was closing her shop. Ekaette does not have formal education but she is a very versatile businesswoman.
Ekaette's husband fell in love with her when he was doing his NYSC in Akwa-lbom State. She got pregnant for him and they went ahead to get married properly. There was no doubt that they loved each other but it was as if the love faded after Dr Williams left Nigeria.
"I think I will stop my business and travel to Canada to look for my husband. I can't just stay inside water and soap will enter my eyes. It is better I go to look for him. He is my husband and I can't just keep quiet and do nothing. What if something bad has happened to him? I have to stop this business and go to Canada in search of my husband. I will go with the children. I can't bear the pain of staying without my husband anymore." Ekaette said in her heart.
As she closed from the market that evening, and she was going home, she was mentally calculating how much money she has saved in her bank account. Ekaette is a crayfish seller in Uyo. She buys the crayfish in bulk and sells it to retailers. She makes a lot of money from the business. In fact, she was the one who gave her husband money to use and travel to Canada. Dr Williams did not have much money when he wanted to relocate. Ekaette gave him N15 million of her own money. Now, he has forgotten about her after arriving Canada.
"I gave him that money hoping that he would go to Canada and secure the future of our children. But now, he got there and forgot about us. The money I gave to him was my business money. After he traveled, I had to hustle until I rebuilt my business again. I gave him all my money but he forgot about me and my children after he got to Canada. I was left empty handed after he traveled. I had to start taking crayfish on credit until my business bounced back. Well, I thank God I have enough money to go to Canada. I and my children will go there and look for my husband." Ekaette said in her heart. She was inside Keke going home from the market.
That same week, Ekaette emptied her account. She used the money to do visa for herself and her children. She spent more than N10 million. She paid an agent to do the application for her. The application was successful. It took three months before the visa came out. Ekaette bought three flight tickets and flew to Canada with her children.
Before her husband stopped calling, he had told her the name of the hospital where he works.
However, when they landed in Canada, they first lodged in a hotel. They stayed at the hotel for the night. The next day, they went to the hospital to look for her husband. They did not see him.
"I'm sorry, but Dr Williams stopped working here five years ago." The hospital receptionist said. Ekaette and her children left the hospital heartbroken.
"The problem is that I don't have money anymore. I have spent all the money I have on visa fees and flight expenses. How am I going to survive? I'm in trouble. The worse is that I don't even know anyone in Canada. What am going to do?" Ekaette asked herself. She was weeping when they got back to the hotel.
