The Man From China Episode Six

Adanna is a very resilient person who knows how to survive in difficult situations. That was what had kept her alive in the evil forest since the day she arrived there. She did not like the place initially but as time went on, she came to develop love for the loneliness and the serenity provided by the tick forest. She learned to stay alone and she learned to hunt for food. She was never hungry. She has always had something to eat in the forest. Even though she was pregnant, she always went out to hunt for animals, fruits and vegetables which she uses as food.

The forest is dangerous because it was filled with dangerous animals, but Adanna did not care. She noticed something strange because animals seem to be afraid of her. She assumed that she would die if she fails to hunt for what to eat, but strangely, she had never been hungry. She decided to face the challenges with courage. That was how she was able to make the forest her home instead of lamenting and dying of hunger.

It was on the first day she arrived there that she discovered the large anthill which looked like a house. She was lucky that the ants were no longer using the anthill. She quickly created a large entrance into it and made it her home. She worked extremely hard on it.

Adanna also created rooms inside the anthill, making it look like a house. The anthill was so large that she divided it into three rooms. She used sticks to partitioned it into two rooms and a parlour where she stays to eat whenever she finishes roasting food outside. She used large amounts of leaves to create a bed for herself. She also cut some wood and ropes and used them to make chairs which she placed in the parlour. The anthill looked like one of those structures in Disney movies. Adanna was living there comfortably. She was not completely happy, but she decided to make use of what she has.

On the day she was banished, she was not allowed to pack her things. Anyone who is banished from the village was never allowed to take anything. The person is meant to go to the evil forest and die of hunger and starvation. However, when she was leaving the village, Adanna was able to hide some things without the knowledge of the people who were banishing her. For instance, she took lighter because she knew she would need to make fire if she was going to survive. She also carried her kitchen knife. She reasoned that she would need these two things for survival. She hid them in her wrapper on the day she was sent to the evil forest. Those were the only things that went to the forest with her.

That night after she dragged Chin Cheng into the anthill, she laid him on the bed which she used leaves to make. She quickly made fire to warm his body because the forest is usually a very cold place. All these were happening during the rainy season when the forest was ice-cold. She quickly brought Chin Cheng close to the burning fire to warm his body. Adanna kept some meat she had hunted earlier and that was what she used to feed Chin Cheng. It did not take long before Chin Cheng regained his senses after Adanna fed him and gave him some water in a calabash.

"Where did you get water in this thick forest and how did you get the meat I just ate? The meat is very sweet and the water is also clean. How have you been able to survive in this terrible place? You seem to have converted the place into a home. How is this possible? Where did you fetch water and where did you see the food you have been using to survive for many weeks now?" Chin Cheng asked when he opened his eyes and started eating.

"Well, there is a large rock in this forest and it has very clean water. The water flows endlessly and it is so clean that when I drink it, it cools my throat. As for the meat, I hunt them. I can hunt for meat. Also, there are fruits in the forest. When I was walking around, I saw pawpaw, orange, mango, guava, plantain and banana trees clustered in one area. In fact, there are many good things in the forest. I don't know why our people named it an evil forest. The place is beautiful." Adanna responded.

"Maybe because of the dangerous animals that are here. Do you know how long I have been running from those hyenas? They nearly killed me despite the fact that I did not disturb them. They are so wicked. If you did not come, they would have killed me. They would have used me to do food this night. I'm so happy that I saw you. I'm so grateful to you. I so much love you." Chin Cheng said.

"They wouldn't have done anything bad to you. In fact, they were trying to protect you. The hyenas know who you are." Adanna said. Chin Cheng was surprised to hear such a thing from her. He quickly remembered how one of the hyenas tore his trouser and almost bit his leg with its sharp teeth, yet, she was saying the dangerous animals were only protecting him.

"What do you mean? For all I know, those animals wanted me dead. One of them even dragged my trouser yesterday and tore it. It wanted to bite my leg and tear it into pieces. And now you are saying they were protecting me? What manner of protection was that?" Chin Cheng asked. His voice was becoming stronger and stronger after Adanna gave him food and some medicinal herbs to chew.

"After I came into this forest, I was told that I'm carrying the future king of our town. The child in my womb is going to be a king. He is going to be our next king." Adanna said to Chin Cheng.

"What do you mean? Who told you that you will give birth to a king? You are saying strange things. Are you sure you are in your right senses?" Chin Cheng asked.

"Yes my love. I'm in my right senses. Just relax and rest. Why do you think the animals heard

my voice and ran away? In the morning, I will tell you everything I heard from the spirit-world. I will tell you everything that has happened in this forest. I'm now the queen of the forest." Adanna said with a smile that reassured Chin Cheng.
