The Man From China Episode 2

Pregnancy cannot be hidden. Some people are able to detect a pregnant woman even from the very first month. By merely looking at the woman's physical appearance and general behavior, they are able to detect if there's a baby in the womb. One of the people who can do this very well is Adanna's mother. She is a traditional midwife in the village and her skills include knowing when a woman is pregnant.

"You are pregnant." Andanna's mother said to her one morning when she woke up and was brushing her teeth outside in the compound.

"I'm not pregnant." Andanna said. She knew her mother was telling the truth. However, she was trying to lie to her mother so she could buy some time for herself before the ultimate 'wahala' would start.

"You know me very well. I can detect pregnancy even on the first day of conception. You can't deceive me. You cannot fool me. You are pregnant. Go ahead and tell me, who got you pregnant? You don't have a husband yet, but pregnant? You don't have a husband yet, but you are pregnant. Why is that so?" Her mother asked. She was using her eyes to survey Adanna's body from her head to her toes.

"I told you I'm not pregnant. How did you know that I'm pregnant? I have not done pregnancy test yet, so how are you sure you are right? I'm not pregnant." Andanna insisted, but her mother knew what she was saying.

"I'm sure of what I'm saying. I have watched you very closely lately and I know you have taken in. You have to tell me who got you pregnant so we will know how to handle the problem. You know are betrothed to the Crown Prince and supposed to marry him. You were not supposed to go close to another man. You were not supposed to allow any other man to touch because you belong to the Crown Prince. With what you have done now, you have brought our legs out in the open. You have put myself and your father in serious trouble. If it is discovered that you got pregnant for another man, we will be banished from the village. This is what you want for your father and mother? Why did you decide to bring shame into our family?" Adanna's mother.

"Don't worry about the pregnancy mama. I promise you, the Crown Prince cannot do us anything. I have chosen the person I want to marry. And he is responsible for the pregnancy. I don't love the Crown Prince and I would never marry him. No one should force me to marry someone I don't love. I can't be his 7th wife. I'm too young for that and I have said this several times. Adanna's voice was emotional when she was talking to her mother. Her mother watched her with so much anger.

"You got pregnant for that man from China? You allowed a man from another country to get you pregnant? Do you think Chin Cheng can defend you from the Crown Prince? Why are you bent on destroying our family? Let me call your father to come and hear what you have done to yourself." Adanna's mother said. She was already crying but Adanna was not moved. Her mother went into the house and emerged with her father.

"Look at you. I was thinking you are a responsible daughter, not knowing you will bring shame to me. How do you intend to protect us and yourself from the Crown Prince? You know the laws of this village and you are aware that any woman chosen by the Crown Prince is not supposed to go close to another man. You have created a serious problem for your parents. Adanna's father lamented helplessly.

"Papa, nothing will happen to us." Adanna said.

"Will you shut up that thing you call mouth?" Her father responded and walked away angrily.

That same evening, rumours had reached the palace that Adanna had violated the laws of the land. The Crown Prince got to hear that Adanna was pregnant. He was livid with anger. The Crown Prince is a lover of young women and he was sad when he heard that he cannot have Adanna who was among the most beautiful girls in the village.

"She and her family would have to be severely punished for this crime. They will have to suffer serious consequences for daring to disobey me and the laws of the land. Go to their house and bring them to the palace." The prince said to his men.

Meanwhile, Adanna's mother and father knew there was fire on the mountain. They had packed a few things and ran away from the village because they did not want to face the shame of being banished. However, Adanna refused to run. She was the only one at home when the men from the palace came. She did not resist them, she followed them obediently.

Adanna was dragged before the Crown Prince and made to sit down on the floor as if she was a common thief. She was weeping because there was no one to speak on her behalf. She was subjected to a lot of humiliation.

"How dare you reject me? Are you out of your mind? What were you thinking when you got pregnant for another man despite my proposal?" The prince asked.

"Do your worst. I hate you." Adanna said tearfully. No one in the village has ever challenged the prince.

Everyone feared him because he was a wicked man. But Adanna was courageous enough to speak harshly to the prince.

"You are playing with fire. Well, you are going to burn since you are playing with fire. I'm going to show you pepper. In your next life, you will never try to challenge a prince. Send this lady to the deepest part of the evil forest." He said. His order was carried out immediately.

Adanna had no food, no water and no clothes except the one she was putting on. The men from the palace led her out of the village and pushed her into the forest. They made sure they went very deep into the forest before turning back. Adanna was left alone to die of hunger and thirst in the forest.

When Chin Cheng returned from work that evening, he was also captured by men sent by the prince. He was taken to the palace and locked up.
