The Man From China - S01 E01

Chin Cheng is a Chinese construction worker who has lived in the village of Amachi for more than three years. The government is constructing a major highway which passed through the village to many other states of the federation. The road is so long that it is going to take five years to complete it. The contract was awarded to Chinese construction workers and they use Amachi village as their operational base. The village is so beautiful and serene and they loved the place. It is from that village that they go to work every morning. They have temporary container houses which were well- decorated. There is no electricity in the village, but the Chinese workers brought big generators that give them light.

Chin Cheng is a very jovial man. For the three years he has lived in Amachi village, he managed to learn the Igbo language because he usually goes out to interact with the villagers. The Chinese workers usually don't cook and they have learned to eat local food.

Chin Cheng has a girlfriend. Her name is Chin Cheng has a girlfriend. Her name is Adanna. Adanna is a food seller who usually comes to sell jollof rice and fried chicken to the Chines people. That was how she and Chin Cheng met and fell in love. Chin Cheng wants to marry her, but the problem is that Adanna's parents do not like him.

"My time in Nigeria is coming to an end. I will like to marry you so that by the time I'm going back to China, I will go with you. I don't want to leave you in Nigeria. I really love you and I don't ever want to stay without you. What are your parents saying? Have they approved our relationship?" Ching Cheng asked.

"They have not approved. And in our culture, they must approve before we can get married. In my culture, marriage is about the family, not about an individual. My parents have started accepting gifts from one rich man who also wants to marry me. They are saying I must marry the man, but I don't like him. You are the one I like." Adanna said to Chin Cheng.

"Who is the man? Is he from this village? How come you never told me about him? How come I'm just knowing that there is another man in your life?" Chin Cheng asked angrily.

"The man just started visiting our house recently. Actually, he is the crown prince of the village and he is allowed by culture to choose and marry any woman he wants. Once the crown prince choses a woman, no other man is allowed to approach her. He chose me, and tradition demands that I must marry him without asking questions. It does not matter if I love him or not. So far as he has chosen me to be his bride, I will be forced to be his wife. But I don't want him. Just that the man is very rich and he has been bringing a lot of gifts to my parents. My parents do not even have a choice. The Crown Prince is a very powerful man in this village. I don't even know what to do. God knows you are the one I love." Adanna said with tears in her eyes.

"How can they just allocate you to one man and then shut out other men? You are a beautiful woman and you will certainly have other admirers. Why are they restricting other men from approaching you? This is a strange culture. It is supposed to be a competition so that whoever wins your heart would become your husband." Chin Cheng said. He was not happy that the Crown Prince wanted to forcefully take his fiancée. He truly and sincerely loves Adanna.

"I really don't know how to handle the situation. The Crown Prince is on my neck. He is not yet aware that I have another man in my life. If it is discovered that I have another man who is competing with the Crown Prince, I and my parents will be banished from the village. I don't want that kind of thing to happen to me or my parents. This is even why my parents insisted that I must leave you and follow the Prince. I have been hiding from him since I was chosen to be his wife." Adanna said. They took a long time to talk that evening when Adanna finished selling her jollof rice to the Chinese people. They were in Chin Cheng's room. Each day, after selling her jollof rice, she usually enters Ching Cheng's room before going home.

"Do you think I should carry you and run away to China? We can get married in China. If running away would solve the problem, I don't mind eloping with you when I'm going to China. Nobody would know. I really love you and I don't ever want to stay even a day without seeing you. Losing you to the Crown Prince would be something I will not be able to endure. Please, follow me and run away to China." Chin Cheng said. Adanna considered the suggestion for a while before responding.

"I would have loved to run away with you but what happens to my parents and my siblings? They will suffer in this village. If I refuse to marry the Crown Prince and then follow a Chinese man to his country, my family will be banished from the village. The king's family is very rich and powerful. They are highly respected and no one wants to fall into their trap. At least, if I'm falling in their trap, I will be here to face them so that my parents would not suffer much." Adanna lamented. She was still crying. Chin Cheng gave her a white handkerchief to wipe her tears.

"So, what are you going to do? Are you going to leave me and marry him?" Chin Cheng asked.

"No! God forbid. Do you know that I will not even be the first wife? The Crown Prince has up to 6 wives. I will be the 7th wife. You know, he is the future king and he is allowed to marry as many women as he wants. Each time he points at any woman, the woman must follow him and become his wife. But in my case, I will not follow him. You are the one I love. I'm too young to be someone's 7th wife. I will suffer. And I don't like suffering." Adanna said. She wiped her tears and cleaned her nose.

"So, what are we going to do? really want to marry you." Chin Cheng asked.

"Get me pregnant. You know we have been using protection to avoid pregnancy. Let us stop using protection so that I will get pregnant. By the time I get pregnant for you, the prince will have no choice but to leave me." Adanna said.

"Hmmm! Won't you and your family be banished if you get pregnant for me? I don't want you people to have any problems because of me." Chin Cheng said.

"Let us do it. Get me pregnant. I'm ready to face the challenges. Even if the Crown Prince banishes me, I will go with your baby in my womb." Adanna said. That same night, they started playing bedroom game without protection. They played bedroom game without protection for one month Adanna got pregnant.
