The Twin Pregnancy Episode

Three

Nene was prepared to say the whole truth even though Roland threatened her not to mention his name if she was going to spill the beans. She knew it was a mere threat, because he can not do anything to her. So by the time her aunt dragged her to the living room and asked her who got her pregnant, she did not waste time to tell her who was responsible.

"This girl, you have finally brought shame into my house. You have finally finished me. What will my fellow women say? Who got you pregnant?" Her aunt asked in a fit of anger.

"His name is Roland. He is a member of NYSC serving in my school." Nene responded. She wasn't crying but her voice was emotional.

"Look at you! I sent you to school to acquire education, but instead of coming home with a certificate, you have returned with pregnancy. Your mates are preparing for their final exams while you are preparing to give birth. Why did you decide to bring shame to me?" Nene's aunt asked with a loud voice.

"Aunty, I'm sorry. It was a mistake, but it is not the end of life. I will overcome this and bounce back and still go to school. I know I must have disappointed you, but I promise you that I will put things right." Nene said confidently. Even her aunt was taken aback by the fact that she had refused to cry.

"You will put things right? How? Do you think being a mother is a child's play? It's a very serious responsibility and you have to be prepared before going into it. You are still very much young but you want to destroy your future with early childbearing? You are shameless!" Her aunt said. Her anger has increased hundredfold.

"My future is still intact aunty. Don't worry, I will still go to school." Nene said, but her aunt was not having it.

"Will you shut up? Your 'cho cho cho' is too much. Stand up from there and take me to the man who got you pregnant. He must marry you because I'm not going to live with a pregnant woman under my roof." Her aunt said as she stood up and dragged Nene towards the door.

The apartment where Roland lived was not that far from where Nene and her aunt lived. It's the same area, so it was not long before they arrived. Nene led her aunt to the compound and soon, they were standing at Roland's doorstep. Nene's aunt was the one who knocked at the door but no one opened. She even picked up a stone, using it to knock at the door violently but it appears Roland was not inside.

As she kept on knocking, a lady who also lives in the compound heard the sound of the knock and decided to come out.

"Madam what is the problem? Is everything alright? Did anyone die? Can't you see that Roland is not around? If he is around, I'm sure he would have opened the door since. What is the problem?" The lady asked, frowning her face, indicating that the knocks were disturbing her in her own room.

"He got this girl pregnant and I'm here to give him his wife." Nene's aunt responded aggressively.

"Well, Roland is not around. As a matter of fact, he no longer lives here. He has also left the town and even the state. He has applied for relocation and NYSC moved him to his state of origin which is Lagos. He left this evening, just a few minutes before you arrived. If you want to see him, you can go to Lagos." The lady tells Nene and her aunt.

It immediately became clear that Roland had escaped. He planned his move well and he was able to outsmart Nene. Nene's aunt was so angry when she heard that Roland was no longer in town. She dragged Nene home in anger.

"You are not going to live in my house with this pregnancy. It is not in my house that you will stay and raise a baby. Go in there and pack your things and leave my house. Go back home to your parents and tell them you got pregnant for a man who can't take care of you." Nene's aunt tells her as soon as they got home.

"Please auntie, I can't got to my parents alone with pregnancy. They will finish me. Can you allow me to stay here? Let me just stay, when I give birth, I will leave. Please, don't throw me out like this. I have nowhere to go to. Nene pleaded, but all her pleas fell on deaf ears. When she saw that Nene was wasting too much time, she went into her room and moved her things out. She threw the bags out and ordered Nene to leave.

It was already nightfall when Nene stepped into the streets, not knowing where to go to. Luckily for her, she has some money which she has been saving for more than five years.

Apart from selling groundnuts for her aunt, Nene also has her own secret business which she does in school. Every day, she secretly goes to the market to buy already fried groundnuts which she takes to school to sell to her classmates and other students. During break, she ties the groundnuts in bits and her mates buy a lot of it. She even added popcorn and plantain chips. Her aunt is not aware of this. She saved every little profit she made and after five years, the money has reached N200,000. She had secretly opened a bank account where she saved the money without her aunt's knowledge.

When she came out into the streets, she wondered what she was going to do next.

"Should I sleep in the streets or what? Should I go back to the village to meet my parents? Or should I go to Lagos to look for Roland?" Nene asked herself, standing by the roadside. Her mind was divided, but the earlier she decides the better because the streets are unforgiving in the night.
