The Twin Pregnancy Episode Two

Nene haven't been herself since she discovered that she was pregnant. She easily sleeps off in the class anytime the teacher is teaching and her body had become generally weak. Nene was sure some people were already gossipping about her and how strangely she behaved in school. But she had decided that no matter the shame she was going to face, she was ready to take responsibility for her actions.

"I'm going to keep this baby no matter what people say. I will give birth to this baby and raise the child on my own even if Roland refuses to help me. I made a mistake by getting pregnant before marriage, but this is not the end of life. I will be strong for myself and for my unborn child." Nene said to herself one afternoon when she was returning from school. She was alone walking home under the hot sun.

When she got home, her aunt, Madam Gina gave her boiled groundnut to go out and sell as

usual. Every single day, Nene goes out to hawk after school. It was during one of those days that she branched off to Roland's apartment and they did something which resulted in pregnancy.

Nene was extremely tired and she knew she was likely going to collapse on the road if she goes out to hawk.

"What am I going to tell my aunt? I can't possibly tell her that I will not go out to sell the groundnuts because she will start asking me why. How am I going to hide this pregnancy from her? Pregnancy cannot be hidden forever. It will soon start getting big and everyone, Including my aunt will know that I'm pregnant." Nene said. The tray of groundnuts lay before her. Her aunt stood before her, telling her she must finish selling the groundnuts before coming back home.

"Make sure you sell everything. The groundnuts are not much. It's not even up to N5000. Just walk around in the neighborhood, you will finish selling them within a few minutes." Nene's aunt said without knowing the storm that was raging in the young lady's heart.

"When you come back, you will eat. Come and start going because there's no more time." Nene's aunt said. Nene has never eaten before going out to hawk. Every day after school, she goes out to hawk without food in her belly.

"Yes aunty." Nene responded. She lifted the tray of groundnuts and placed it on her head and then started going. Nene went from street to street selling the groundnuts. However, after about one hour of walking around under the hot sun, she got so tired that she was not able to move. She looked for a shade and sat there to rest.

"This is risky for my health and even for my baby. I cannot keep hawking with this pregnancy. I have to do something immediately. "Nene said in her heart. She gathered courage and stood up again, lifting the tray of groundnuts to her head. Nene went straight to Roland's apartment.

"I'm not feeling fine. I need money so I that I can start going to the hospital for antenatal care. I don't want anything to happen to me or the baby. Besides, I have come to inform you that I will open up to my aunt about the pregnancy. I want to tell her that I'm pregnant." Nene sald as soon as she entered Roland's room.

"You can't do that. Do you want to ruin my life? Do you know what the school will do to me if they discovered that I got a student pregnant? Are you even thinking about me at all? I told you to do away with the pregnancy and here you are saying you will tell your aunt about it? And why are you asking me for money? Look Nene, I have not eaten since morning because I don't have money to cook. I told you I can't even feed myself properly. How do you want me to get money to give to you for antenatal?" Roland asked Nene in a hushed tone. He didn't not want anyone outside to hear what she was saying.

"So what should I do then? I cannot continue to hawk for my aunt under this condition. What do you expect me to do? Am I the one who got myself pregnant? When you were doing it, were you not thinking of the consequences? And I have told you I'm not going to do away with the pregnancy. I will keep the baby no matter what." Nene said angrily.

"If you are keeping the baby, make sure you don't mention my name as the person that got you pregnant. I will deny it anywhere anytime. Just do well to keep my name out of your mouth. I beg you with the name of God, don't ruin my life." Roland said to Nene.

"What do you think would happen to you if people become aware that you got me pregnant? Will they kill you? Highest, they will talk and that's all. In my opinion, it is better to open up instead of hiding. And this evening, I'm going to open up to my aunt. I will not die." Nene said. She picked up her tray and started going home even though she hasn't finished selling the groundnuts.

When Nene got home, her aunt was in the kitchen cooking. She went to the kitchen to meet her.

"Aunty, there's something I want to tell you." Nene said to her aunt who was busy at the sink, washing some plates.

"What is it? I hope you finished selling the groundnuts? You came back too early. Have you finished selling?" Her aunt asked sarcastically.

"I couldn't finish it ma." Nene replied weakly.

"Why? If you didn't finish selling the groundnuts, why did you come home?" Her aunt asked.

"I'm pregnant." Nene responded courageously.

"You are what?" Her aunt asked with shock written on her face.

"I said I'm pregnant. I know this is shocking but it's true. Please, forgive me. I'm so sorry that this happened. I take responsibility for my actions." Nene said again. Her aunt abandoned what she was doing and turned to face Nene. She dragged her to the living room for questioning.
