The Twin Pregnancy Episode One

Nene discovered she was pregnant two months after she started dating Roland. Nene was in secondary school and Roland was her teacher. Roland had spent only a few months in the school during which Nene's beauty caught his attention. He was posted to the school for his one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). At that time, Nene was just clocking 19 and she was in SS3, her final class. She started school late at an older age, because she was a house maid to her aunt. They lived in Lagos. She was so scared when her monthly visitor did not come.

"I have not seen my monthly visitor. This has never happened to me before. My monthly visitor has been very consistent since I became a teenager. Oh God, what is going on? I hope I'm not pregnant? If I'm pregnant, my own has finished. My aunt will kill me." Nene said in her heart. It was the third day after she missed her monthly visitor. She was in school that morning and even though a teacher was teaching in her class, she was not paying attention.

"Let this teacher finish quick so that I will go to Roland's office and tell him what's happening to me. I don't understand how I have been feeling since one week ago. My body has been behaving strangely. I have never felt this kind of symptoms before, even when I had malaria." Nene said in her heart. As soon as the teacher left the class, Nene also went out. She went straight to Roland's office. Luckily for her, Roland was the school's creative arts teacher, so he was always in the arts studio where the school gave him as an office. He doesn't use the school's staff room. Roland was drawing when Nene came into the studio.

"I drew an image of you. Do you like it?" Roland asked Nene. He did not know the storm in her heart so he was busy talking about painting.

"Yes I like it, but there's a big problem. Please, we need to talk. There is something I want to tell you." Nene said as she took one seat beside the table.

"What is the issue my love? Do you have a difficult homework you need me to help you with?" Roland asked, but Nene's problem was far from that.

"It is not homework. The problem is bigger than homework Roland. I'm in a serious trouble." Nene said. Her hesitation to open up left Roland in suspense, making his heart to beat fast.

"Just say it. You are scaring me. What is the problem? Did anyone die?" Roland asked.

"No! No one is dead. But I think I might be pregnant." Nene said. As soon as the words came out from her mouth, Roland heart dropped into his belly. He was left in total shock such that in a few seconds, he did not say anything in response.

"Are you sure about this? How did you know you are pregnant?" Roland asked when he finally regained his composure.

"I know because I have not seen my monthly visitor. It's three days late and this has never happened to me. My monthly visitor has always. been consistent since I became a teenager. Also, I'm feeling other symptoms. My milk factory is stiff and very painful. I have never felt this before. I used my phone to browse the symptoms of pregnancy and I saw that I'm likely pregnant." Nene said tearfully.

"We have to be sure you are pregnant. Just wait for me, I will be back." Roland said as he dashed out of the arts studio and went into the next street just behind the school. He knows a pharmacy shop there, so he went to buy two pregnancy test strips. He returned to the school as quickly as possible. He gave the test strips to Nene and instructed her on how to use them.

Nene went to one of the rest rooms close to the art studio to perform the brief pregnancy test. When she was there, Roland's heart was beating very fast. He could not wait to hear the result of the test.

"I hope she is not pregnant. I don't think I'm ready to deal with this kind of thing right now." Roland said in his heart. About five minutes later, Nene emerged from the rest room with the pregnancy test strips in her hand.

"It's positive. This means I'm pregnant." Nene said. She was crying. Roland himself was left in a paralyzing shock. He did not say a word, but he collected the test strips and checked by himself, hoping that there was mistake. But there was no mistake, because Nene was truly pregnant and he is responsible.

"We have to do away with it. I'm not ready to be a father. And you are also too young to be a mother. We are not capable of dealing with this. I suggest we do away with it as secretly as possible." Roland said. He was almost crying, but he was able to control the tears and kept them from dropping.

"No way! I'm not going to do that. It's too dangerous. I'm keeping the pregnancy." Nene responded aggressively.

"What? Do you know the implications of having a baby? I can't even feed myself well not to talk of feeding you and the baby. I don't have a job and the allowance the government is paying me is barely enough to buy me food. How do you expect me to take care of you? Besides, I don't know how to explain it to my mother that I got a girl pregnant. Please, I will give you something to take and it will be flushed out." Roland said emotionally. He dashed out of the studio again and went back to the pharmacy. Soon, he came back with a medicine tied in a black nylon and then handed it over to Nene.

"When you get home, just take the four tablets at once. Don't tell anyone about this. Let it be a secret between me and you. Once you take the medicine, the pregnancy will be flushed." Roland said. Nene refused to collect the tablets.

"I'm not taking any tablets. I'm keeping the pregnancy." Nene said as she leaves the studio.
