Episode 2: The Black Box

Ten years is a very long time to keep a promise. If you think about it, ten years is many, many days. It is exactly three thousand and six hundred days. For all of those days, Rose was a very good wife. She was very loyal to her husband, David. She remembered the promise she made on the very first day they moved into their house. She had promised never to look inside the small, heavy black box under their bed. And for ten years, she kept her word. She never even moved the box. She never tried to slide it out from the dark corner. She never tried to blow the dust off the top of it. To Rose, the box became like a silent pet. It was a pet that never moved. It was a pet that never made a sound. It just sat there in the dark, watching the world go by. It was a part of their room, just like the lamp or the rug. But unlike the lamp or the rug, the box held a deep secret.

David continued to be the perfect husband during all those years. He never changed. He was still the same kind man she had married. Every Friday, he still brought her beautiful flowers. Sometimes they were red roses, and sometimes they were bright sunflowers. He still cooked her favorite meals on the weekends. He would wear a little apron and whistle a happy tune while he stirred the soup. They still went to the park and held hands. When they walked, David would point at the clouds and tell Rose funny stories. Their life seemed like a beautiful dream that would never end. They were very happy, and their home was always peaceful. People in their neighborhood would look at them and smile. They would say that Rose and David were the happiest couple in the whole town. Rose felt very lucky. She felt that her life was perfect because David was in it. She loved him more and more each day.

But even though she was happy, the box was still there. It was always there. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, Rose would wake up. She would hear the wind blowing outside the window. She would look toward the dark corner under the bed. She knew the box was sitting there in the shadows. She would wonder what was inside it. Was it a letter? Was it a photo? Was it something from a long time ago? She would tell herself to go back to sleep. She would tell herself that her promise was more important than her curiosity. She wanted to be a good person. She wanted to be the kind of wife that David deserved. So, she would close her eyes and wait for the morning sun to come. She would forget about the box for a while and focus on her happy life.

One sunny Monday morning, things began to change. The sun was big and yellow in the sky. The birds were singing very loudly in the trees. It was a beautiful day, but David was in a big hurry. He was getting ready for a very long trip for his work. This was a special trip. He had to go to a city that was far, far away. He told Rose that he would be gone for a whole week. This made Rose feel a little bit sad. She did not like it when David was away. The house felt too quiet when he was not there. She loved the sound of his footsteps and the sound of his laughter. But she knew that work was important. She helped him pack his suitcase. She put in his shirts, his socks, and his favorite blue tie.

David was rushing around the house. He was looking for his watch and his coat. He was running late for his train. He did not want to miss it. He grabbed his big suitcase and walked to the front door. He stopped and looked at Rose. He gave her a big, warm kiss on her cheek. He told her how much he would miss her. He told her to take good care of the house while he was gone. Rose smiled and told him not to worry. She told him she would be waiting for him when he came back. David waved one last time and rushed out the door. Rose stood at the big window in the living room. She watched as David got into his car. She watched him drive down the street. She waved and waved until his car disappeared around the corner. Now, she was all alone in the big, quiet house.

Rose turned back to the kitchen. She needed to clean up the breakfast dishes. There were crumbs on the table and juice in the glasses. She picked up a yellow cloth and started to wipe the table. She moved the fruit bowl to clean under it. The fruit bowl was full of red apples and yellow bananas. As she moved the bowl, she saw something that made her heart skip a beat. Her eyes grew very wide. There, sitting right next to the fruit bowl, was David’s heavy ring of keys. Rose stopped moving. She just stared at the keys. David never went anywhere without his keys. He carried them in his pocket every single day. They were very important to him. They were the keys to the house, the keys to the car, and the keys to his office.

Rose reached out her hand very slowly. She picked up the keys. They felt cold and heavy in her palm. She looked at each key on the ring. There was a big gold key. There was a small black key. And then, she saw it. There was a tiny silver key. This key looked different from all the others. It was very small and very shiny. It was a special kind of key. Rose’s hands began to shake as she looked at it. She knew exactly what that tiny silver key was for. She knew which lock it belonged to. It was the key to the silver lock on the black box under their bed. For ten years, David had kept that key hidden. He had always kept it with him. But now, because he was in such a hurry, he had forgotten it.

The house was very silent now. The only sound Rose could hear was the ticking of the clock on the wall. Tick, tock, tick, tock. It felt like the clock was counting down to something. Rose looked at the keys in her hand. She felt a very strange feeling in her stomach. It was a mix of fear and excitement. She knew that David would be gone for a whole week. He was far away by now. He was on a train heading to a distant city. He would not be back for seven long days. For the first time in ten years, Rose had the power to see the secret. The silver key was shining on the table just a moment ago, and now it was in her hand. She was all alone with the one thing she was never supposed to have.

Rose thought about her promise. She thought about the serious look on David’s face on the day they moved in. He had said, "You must never, ever look inside." She had said, "I promise." For three thousand and six hundred days, she had been strong. She had been a faithful wife. But the tiny silver key was so small and so pretty. It felt like it was inviting her to solve the mystery. It felt like the secret was finally ready to be told. Rose looked toward the hallway that led to the bedroom. She thought about the dark corner under the soft bed. She thought about the heavy black box waiting there in the shadows. The secret was so close now. It was just a few steps away.

She began to wonder if maybe David wanted her to find the keys. Maybe it was not a mistake. But then she remembered how fast he was running. She remembered how he almost forgot his coat. No, it was a mistake. He was just in a rush. He did not mean to leave the keys behind. This made Rose feel even more nervous. If she used the key, she would be breaking a rule. She would be breaking a promise that was ten years old. But her heart was beating very fast. The curiosity that had been growing like a small seed was now a giant tree. It was filling up her whole mind. She could not think about anything else. All she could think about was the tiny silver key and the black box.

Rose walked slowly toward the bedroom. Each step felt very heavy. The floorboards made a little creaking sound under her feet. The house felt different now. It did not feel like a place of laughter and sunshine. It felt like a place of secrets and shadows. She reached the bedroom door and pushed it open. The room was bright because the sun was shining through the curtains. She walked over to the side of the bed. She knelt down on the soft rug. She looked under the bed. There it was. The black box was still there. It was covered in a thin layer of dust, but the silver lock was still shining. It was waiting for the key.

Rose held the key ring up to the light. The tiny silver key seemed to glow. She felt like the box was talking to her. It was saying, "Open me, Rose. See what is inside." Her heart was thumping against her chest like a little drum. Her breath was coming in short gasps. She knew that once she put the key in the lock, her life might change forever. She remembered what the story said. The black box held a secret that would eventually change her life. She was standing at the very edge of that change. She was holding the power in her hands.

She thought about David. She loved him so much. He was so good to her. Would he be angry if he found out? Would he be sad? Or would he understand that ten years is too long to wait? Rose looked at the silver lock and then at the tiny silver key. Her hands were still shaking. She had never felt this way before. It was a feeling of being very brave and very scared at the same time. She took a deep breath and moved her hand closer to the box. The silver key was almost touching the lock. The silence in the room was very loud. Everything in her life had led to this one moment. The promise, the years of waiting, the flowers, the laughter, and now, the keys on the kitchen table.

Rose realized that sometimes, the things we want to know the most are the things that are hidden from us. She realized that a secret is a very heavy thing to carry. David had carried it for ten years. Now, the weight of the secret was moving to her. She had to decide if she was strong enough to handle the truth. She looked at the box one last time. The dark wood looked very old and very strong. The silver lock looked like a tiny eye watching her. Rose felt like she was about to open a door that could never be closed again. She was all alone with the keys David never, ever left behind. And now, the choice was hers.

The mystery of the black box was no longer a dream. It was real. It was right there in front of her. The story of Rose and David was about to take a very big turn. As the sun shone on the bedroom floor, Rose made her choice. She knew what she had to do. The suspense was so high that she could almost feel it in the air. The secret was waiting. The key was ready. And the week was just beginning.

David was in a very big rush and forgot his keys. Do you think this was a simple mistake, or do you think fate wanted Rose to find them?

If you found a secret key that belonged to your partner, would you use it to see what they were hiding?

Rose has kept her promise for ten years. Does she deserve to know what is in the box now?

What do you think the "tiny silver key" says about the kind of secret that is inside the box? Is it a beautiful secret or a scary one?
