Episode 1: The Black Box

Every house has a secret. Some secrets are small and some are very big. In the house where Rose lived, there was a very big secret. This secret lived right under her bed. It was inside a small and heavy black box. Rose lived in a very pretty and cozy home with her husband David. David was the kindest husband any woman could ever ask for. He was a very good man who loved Rose very much. Every single Friday, David would come home with a big smile on his face. He would be hiding something behind his back. Then, he would pull out a bunch of beautiful flowers for Rose. The flowers smelled so sweet and they made the whole house feel happy. Rose loved the red roses and the yellow lilies the most. David did not just bring flowers. He also loved to cook for Rose. He would spend hours in the kitchen making her favorite meals. He would make tasty pasta with red sauce and sweet cakes for dessert. When they ate together, they would talk and laugh. They were very happy together. Their home was always filled with laughter and sunshine. It was the kind of home that made everyone feel safe and warm.

When the sun was shining, David and Rose would go for long walks. They would go to the big park near their house. David always held Rose’s hand very tightly when they walked. He never wanted to let go. They would look at the green trees and listen to the birds singing in the sky. It felt like they were the only two people in the whole world. Everyone in the town thought they were the perfect couple. David was always gentle and soft. He never raised his voice and he always listened when Rose talked. He made her feel like a queen in her own castle. Rose felt like the luckiest woman alive because she had a man who cared for her so deeply. She trusted David more than anyone else. She knew that he would always protect her and keep her safe from any harm.

However, David had one very strict rule. It was the only rule in their happy home. Rose had to follow this rule if they were to stay happy together. On the very first day they moved into their cozy home, something important happened. They had just finished putting their clothes in the closet. The house smelled like fresh paint and new beginnings. David took Rose by the hand and led her into their bedroom. He pointed to a dark corner under their big and soft bed. Rose looked down and saw a small black box sitting there. It looked very old and it was made of dark wood. It had a silver lock on the front that sparkled in the dim light. David looked into Rose’s eyes with a very serious face. He was not smiling anymore. He looked very grave.

David said, "Rose, I love you more than anything in this world. I want us to be happy here forever. But you must promise me one thing. It is a very important promise. You must never, ever look inside the black box under our bed." Rose was a bit surprised by this. She thought it was a bit strange for a kind man like David to have a secret box. But she saw how serious he was. She saw the look in his eyes and she knew this mattered a lot to him. Rose loved David and she trusted him with all her heart. She did not want to make him sad or angry. She wanted their life to stay perfect. So, Rose looked back at him and gave him her word. She promised him that she would never touch the box. She promised she would never try to open the silver lock. David smiled again and hugged her tightly. He seemed very relieved that she had agreed.

For many years, Rose kept that promise faithfully. She was a good wife and she wanted to keep David happy. Life went on and it was very beautiful. They celebrated many birthdays and many holidays in that house. Every morning, Rose would wake up and see David sleeping peacefully beside her. Every afternoon, she would clean their home to keep it neat and tidy. But as the years went by, something began to change inside Rose's mind. The black box started to seem much larger than it really was. It was just a small box, but in her thoughts, it felt like a giant mountain. She could not stop thinking about it. Even when she was happy, a small part of her mind was always wondering about the box. She wondered why it was there. She wondered what was hiding inside it.

Every time Rose cleaned the bedroom floor, she had to move near the bed. She would push the vacuum or the broom across the wooden floor. Every single time, she saw the dark wood of the box. She saw the silver lock that never moved. The box just sat there in the shadows. It was very quiet and very still. It did not make any noise, but it felt like it was calling to her. It felt like the box was whispering her name when David was not around. Rose started to ask herself many questions. Why would a kind and loving man like David have a secret he could not share? They shared everything else. They shared their dreams and their fears. They shared their money and their time. Why was this one thing different? Why did he need to keep a lock on a small wooden box?

Rose began to imagine what could be inside. Sometimes she thought it might be old letters from his family. Sometimes she thought it might be gold coins or a special treasure from his past. But then she would feel bad for thinking these things. She would tell herself that she must be a good wife. She would remind herself of the promise she made on their very first day in the house. She would remember the flowers David brought every Friday. She would remember the way he held her hand in the park. He was so good to her. Surely, she could respect this one simple rule. She would take a deep breath and walk away from the bed. She would go to the kitchen and start cooking dinner. She would try to forget about the dark corner and the heavy box.

But forgetting was not easy. Curiosity is a very strong thing. It is like a small seed that grows into a big tree. The more Rose tried to ignore the box, the more she wanted to know about it. She started to look at David differently sometimes. When he was being very kind, she would wonder if the box held the reason for his kindness. When he was being very quiet, she would wonder if he was thinking about the secret under the bed. The box was like a ghost that lived with them. It was always there, even when they were laughing. It was there when they were sleeping. It was there when they were eating their favorite meals. The silence of the box was starting to feel very loud to Rose. It was a weight on her heart that grew heavier every single day.

One rainy afternoon, Rose was home alone. David was out working late. The rain was tapping on the windows like small fingers. The house was very quiet. Rose went into the bedroom to change her clothes. She sat on the edge of the big and soft bed. The room was a bit dark because of the gray clouds outside. She looked down at the floor. There it was. The black box was sitting in its usual spot. The silver lock seemed to shine even more in the dark room. Rose felt a strong urge to reach down and touch it. Her hand shook just a little bit. She thought about how many years had passed. She had been so loyal. She had been so patient. Was it really so bad to just look? Would David ever really know?

Rose shook her head and stood up quickly. No, she told herself. A promise is a promise. She went to the window and watched the rain fall on the garden. She tried to think about the flowers David would bring her on Friday. She tried to think about the love they shared. But the question kept coming back to her. Why the secret? If David loved her so much, why was there a part of his life that was closed off to her? It felt like there was a small wall between them. The wall was made of dark wood and had a silver lock. Rose began to feel a little bit of sadness. She felt like she did not know her husband as well as she thought she did. This thought made her feel very lonely, even though she was in a happy marriage.

She realized that the box was changing her. It was making her feel suspicious. It was making her feel like she was living with a stranger. She did not like this feeling at all. She wanted to be the happy Rose who only thought about sunshine and laughter. But the box would not let her. It was like a magnet that kept pulling her back to the dark corner. Every day, the mystery grew deeper. Every day, the lock seemed to get stronger. Rose did not know that the black box held a secret that would eventually change her life forever. She did not know that her curiosity was leading her toward a moment that would change everything she knew about her home, her husband, and herself.

The story of the black box was just beginning. Rose was standing at a crossroad. On one side was her promise and her happy life with David. On the other side was the truth and the mystery of the heavy black box. She knew that once she made a choice, she could never go back. The silver lock was waiting. The dark wood was waiting. And the secret was waiting to be found. Rose looked at the bed one last time before leaving the room. She closed the door softly, but in her heart, she knew that the box was still there. It would always be there until she finally found the courage to see what was inside. The heavy secret was a part of her life now, and there was no way to escape it.

Rose went downstairs and sat in the living room. She tried to read a book, but she could not focus on the words. She tried to listen to music, but the songs felt empty. All she could see was the image of the box in her mind. She realized that the box was not just under the bed anymore. It was in her heart. It was in her soul. It was a part of her every thought. She wondered if David knew. Did he know that she was struggling? Did he see the look in her eyes when she looked at the bed? He never mentioned the box again. He acted like it did not exist. This made it even harder for Rose. It was like they were both pretending that there was no giant secret in the room.

The sun began to set and the house grew even darker. Rose waited for the sound of David's car in the driveway. She waited for his warm hug and his kind words. She wanted to feel safe again. She wanted to forget about the silver lock and the dark wood. But deep down, she knew that things were different now. The box had opened a door in her mind that could not be shut. The secret was like a storm that was slowly coming toward her. She did not know if she was ready for the storm. She did not know if her marriage was strong enough to survive what was inside the black box. All she knew was that her life was about to change, and nothing would ever be the same again.

As the night came, Rose lay in bed next to David. He was breathing softly, fast asleep. Rose stayed awake for a long time. She listened to the wind outside. She felt the heavy weight of the box right beneath her. It felt like the box was a living thing. It felt like it was breathing with her. She wondered if the secret was a good secret or a bad secret. She wondered if it was a gift or a curse. She closed her eyes and tried to sleep, but the silver lock was the last thing she saw before she drifted off. The mystery of the black box was the only thing that mattered now. And so, the first chapter of their life ended, and the dark secret waited for the morning light.

Why do you think David is so serious about Rose never opening the black box?

If you were Rose, would you have opened the box a long time ago, or would you keep your promise forever?

Do you think a husband and wife should have secrets from each other, even if they are very happy?

What do you think is hidden inside the box that could change Rose's life forever?
