Episode 8: False Beginning

The whistling stopped, and the heavy boots moved away toward the back of the office. Sarah was still inside the dark closet. She was very afraid to move. She thought that if she made even a tiny sound, the man would hear her. She thought he might be hiding around the corner. She thought he might be waiting for her to come out. Her heart was beating very fast. It felt like a little drum inside her chest. She held her breath for as long as she could. The closet was small and smelled like soap. There were mops and buckets all around her. One mop touched her face, but she did not move. She waited for a long time. She waited until her legs felt very stiff. She waited until her ears hurt from listening to the quiet. She wanted to be very sure that the man was gone. Finally, she did not hear any more sounds. The hallway was very still.

Sarah waited for a long time before she dared to move. She slowly put her hand on the cold door handle. She turned it very, very slowly. She did not want it to make a click sound. She opened the door just a little bit and looked out. The hallway was empty. The lights were still dim. She could see the elevator at the end of the hall. She did not want to use the elevator. She thought the man might be waiting for her at the bottom. She thought the elevator was too loud. She slipped out of the closet and ran down the stairs instead of using the elevator. The stairs were made of hard stone. Her shoes made a soft tapping sound. She tried to be as quiet as a mouse. She ran down one floor, then another floor. Her legs were tired, but she did not stop. She reached the bottom of the stairs and pushed the heavy door open.

When she reached the street, the sun was shining, but she felt very cold inside. The air was warm, but Sarah was shivering. The bright light of the sun did not make her feel happy. It made her feel like everyone could see her. She felt like she had a big secret written on her face. She walked fast to her car. She looked around to see if the black car was there. She did not see it, but she still felt scared. She got into her car and locked all the doors. She put her bag on the seat next to her. The blue folder and the black notebook were safe inside. She started the engine and drove away. She did not go home. She did not go to the hospital. She drove her car straight to the police station. She knew she had to tell the truth. She knew she could not hide anymore.

The police station was a big building made of gray bricks. There were police cars with blue and red lights parked outside. Sarah walked inside the front door. Her hands were still shaking. She walked up to the big desk in the middle of the room. There was a police officer sitting there. He was a big man with a kind face. He looked at Sarah and saw that she was upset. He asked her if she needed help. Sarah took a deep breath. She reached into her bag and took out the things she found. She put the black notebook and the blue folder down on the desk. She looked the officer in the eyes. Her voice was small, but it was clear. My husband is Tom the lawyer, she told the officer. He is not the man you think he is.

The officer looked surprised at first. Everyone in the town knew Tom. Everyone thought Tom was a very good man. He was the man who helped poor people. He was the man who was always smiling. The officer looked at the folder and the notebook. He opened the first page of the notebook. He saw the list of names. He saw the big amounts of money. He saw the names of bad men that the police had been looking for. As he began to read the papers, his face became very serious. He stopped smiling. He looked at Sarah with big eyes. He knew that this was very important. He knew that Sarah was telling the truth about something very bad.

He called for more detectives to come and help. Detectives are police officers who solve hard puzzles. Two more men and one woman came into the room. They were wearing suits and they looked very smart. They looked at the papers too. They saw the map of the mountain road. They saw the notes about the oil on the street. They saw the photo of young Tom at the car crash. They all looked very shocked. They took Sarah to a different room. It was a small room with a table and four chairs. There were no windows in the room. Sarah sat in the small room for hours. She was very tired, but she stayed awake. She told them everything she had found in the office.

She told them about the golden key with the bird on it. She told them how she found the secret drawer at the bottom of the desk. She told them about the voice on the phone that asked if the work was done. She told them about the bad money that was bought with lies. She told them about the plan to hurt her family twenty years ago. She told them how Tom had pretended to be her friend so he could marry her. She told them how he wanted her money. She told them how he was a fixer for bad people. The detectives wrote everything down in their own notebooks. They asked her many questions. They wanted to know every little thing. Sarah told them everything she could remember. She did not leave out anything.

As she talked, she felt a weight lifting off her shoulders. It was like she had been carrying a big, heavy rock for a long time. Now, she was letting the rock go. She was being brave for her parents. She felt like she was finally doing something to help them. She felt like she was finally standing up to Tom. She was not a scared little girl anymore. She was a strong woman who knew the truth. She knew that Tom would have to pay for what he did. She knew that the bad men would be caught. She felt a little bit of peace in her heart. She thought about her mommy and daddy. she thought they would be proud of her. She hoped they could see her now.

The detectives were very kind to her. They brought her a glass of water and some crackers. They told her she was doing the right thing. They said that the notebook was very helpful. They said it would help them catch many bad people. They said they would keep her safe. Sarah felt a little bit better, but she was still worried. She knew that Tom was still in the hospital. She knew that the man in the long coat was still out there. She did not know what would happen next. She sat in the room and waited. The lights in the room were very bright. She looked at the clock on the wall. The time went by very slowly. Tick, tick, tick.

But then, a detective walked in with news. He was the man who had been talking to her the most. He looked very busy. He was holding a small phone in his hand. He walked over to Sarah and sat down across from her. He looked into her eyes. He did not look happy. He looked like he had something very important to say. Sarah felt her heart start to beat fast again. She felt the fear coming back into her body. She gripped the edge of the table with her hands. She waited for him to speak. She was afraid of what he would say. She was afraid that something else had gone wrong.

Sarah, he said. His voice was very quiet. The hospital just called. Sarah felt a chill go down her back. She thought about Tom in his hospital bed. She thought about the machines and the white walls. She thought about the man with the dark suit in the hallway. Why was the hospital calling the police? Did something happen to Tom? Did the bad men find him? Sarah felt like she was going to be sick. She waited for the detective to finish his sentence. The room was very quiet. The other detectives stopped talking. Everyone was looking at Sarah.

Tom is starting to wake up, the detective said. Sarah felt like the world stopped moving. Tom was waking up. The monster was coming back to life. The man who lied to her for ten years was opening his eyes. The man who hurt her family was going to speak. Sarah did not know if she should be happy or scared. If he woke up, he would know she went to the office. He would know she found the papers. He would know she told the police. He would be very angry. She thought about his cold face in the photo. She thought about his secrets. She felt like the nightmare was just beginning. She looked at the detective and did not know what to say. The truth was out, but the danger was still there.
