Episode 7: False Beginning

Sarah stayed very quiet and did not say a word into the phone. She held the black phone to her ear with a hand that would not stop shaking. She could hear the sound of someone breathing on the other end. It was a slow and heavy sound. It was the sound of a person who was waiting for an answer. Sarah felt like her heart was going to jump out of her chest. She wanted to scream, but she kept her mouth closed tight. She did not want the person on the other end to know she was there. She did not want them to hear her breath or her heart. The office was very still. The air felt like it was frozen around her. Every second felt like a whole hour.

The person on the other end waited for a moment and then hung up. Sarah heard a loud click and then the sound of a long beep. The line was dead. She slowly put the phone back down on the desk. She looked at her hand. It was very white. She felt a cold sweat on her forehead. She knew that the voice on the phone was not a friend. It was a person who worked with the bad men. It was a person who thought Tom was still working for them. Sarah knew she was in great danger. She realized that the people Tom worked with might come to the office to look for him. They might be on their way right now.

If Tom’s bad friends knew she found the papers, they might hurt her too. Sarah knew too much now. She knew about the secret money. She knew about the list of bad names. And most of all, she knew about the plan to hurt her mommy and daddy twenty years ago. She was not just a wife anymore. She was a person who had the truth in her hands. The truth is a very powerful thing, but it is also very dangerous. She felt like she was standing in the middle of a big fire. She had to get away before the fire burned her. She had to save herself because there was no one else to help her.

She grabbed the black notebook and the blue folder. These were the most important things in the world right now. The black notebook was full of secrets about money and bad deeds. The blue folder was the proof of what happened to her family. She looked at them and felt a mix of anger and sadness. She thought about how many times she had cleaned Tom’s desk and never knew these things were there. She felt like she had been living with a ghost. She put them in her bag and ran toward the door. Her bag felt very heavy now. It was full of the lies of her whole life. She pulled the zipper shut with a sharp noise.

She had to go to the police. She had to tell someone the truth. Sarah thought about the police station in the middle of town. It was a place with bright lights and people who were supposed to keep the town safe. She hoped they would believe her. She hoped they would protect her from the man in the dark suit and the voice on the phone. She reached for the doorknob of the office. The metal was cold against her palm. She turned it slowly and opened the door just a little bit. She looked out into the hallway. The lights in the hall were very dim. It was hard to see very far.

As she reached the hallway, she saw a shadow moving near the elevator. Sarah froze. She did not move a muscle. She watched the shadow. It was a very big shadow that stretched across the floor. It looked like a giant. The shadow was coming from around the corner where the elevator doors were. Sarah could hear a soft humming sound. It was the sound of the elevator moving up or down. She waited to see who would come around the corner. Her breath was coming in short gasps. She wanted to run back into the office, but she knew she could not stay there forever. She had to find a way out of the building.

It was the same tall man from the hospital. When he stepped into the light, Sarah felt her blood turn to ice. It was the man with the mean eyes and the dark suit. He was wearing a long coat now. It was a dark coat that reached down to his knees. He looked even bigger and scarier than he did at the hospital. He was looking for something. He was turning his head from side to side. He looked like a hunter looking for a rabbit. His eyes were sharp and cold. He was walking very slowly, looking at every door in the hallway. Sarah knew he was looking for her. He was looking for the woman who had the golden key.

Sarah ducked into a small closet and held her breath. She had to move very fast. There was a small door right next to her. It was a closet where the cleaning people kept their mops and buckets. She opened the door quietly and stepped inside. It was very dark and it smelled like soap and old dust. She closed the door just as the man turned his head toward her. She was in total darkness. She could feel a mop touching her shoulder. She could feel a big bucket near her feet. She stayed very still. She pressed her back against the wall of the closet. She held her bag tight to her chest.

She could hear his heavy boots walking on the floor. Thud. Thud. Thud. The sound was getting louder and louder. Every thud felt like a hammer hitting the floor. The man was walking closer to the closet. Sarah closed her eyes and tried to think about something else. She tried to think about the sun or the birds in the park. But the sound of the boots was too loud. It filled the whole hallway. She could imagine the man’s face. She could imagine his mean eyes looking through the wood of the door. She felt like the walls of the closet were closing in on her.

He stopped right in front of the closet door. The sound of the boots stopped. There was a long and scary silence. Sarah felt like the air was gone. She held her breath until her chest hurt. She was so afraid that her teeth were chattering. She had to put her hand over her mouth to stay quiet. She prayed that the door was locked. She prayed that the man would think the closet was empty. She could hear her heart beating. It was so loud that she thought the man could hear it too. It went boom, boom, boom in the quiet hallway. She felt a tear fall down her cheek.

She thought about her parents and how they had been betrayed by the man she called her husband. In the dark closet, she could see their faces. she remembered her mommy’s smile and her daddy’s laugh. They were good people. They loved her very much. And Tom had taken them away. He had planned the crash. He had watched them suffer. And then he had lied to her for ten long years. He had pretended to love her while he was the one who caused her so much pain. The betrayal felt like a sharp knife in her heart. She felt so much anger that it made her feel strong for a second. She wanted to fight for them.

The man outside the door suddenly began to whistle a low, scary tune. It was a slow song that did not have any happy notes. It was the kind of song a person whistles when they are waiting for something. It sounded cold and mean. The sound came through the cracks of the closet door. It filled the small space where Sarah was hiding. The whistle was very steady. It did not stop. It was like the man was telling her that he knew she was there. He was playing a game with her. He was waiting for her to get too scared and come out. Sarah squeezed her eyes shut. She tried to block out the sound, but it was everywhere.

The tune went on and on. It was a melody that Sarah did not know, but it felt like a warning. The man was just standing there, right on the other side of the thin wood. Sarah could almost feel the heat of his body. She could imagine him leaning against the door with a mean smile on his face. He was enjoying this. He liked making her afraid. He was a bad man, just like Tom was a bad man. They were all part of the same dark world. Sarah felt like she was trapped in a box with a monster outside. She did not know how she would ever get out.

She thought about the back of the building. She knew there were stairs at the other end of the hall. If she could just get to the stairs, she could run down to the street. She could run to the police station. But the man was blocking the way. He was standing right there. If she opened the door, he would grab her. If she stayed inside, he would eventually open it himself. She felt like there was no way to win. She looked at the blue folder in her bag. She thought about the map and the oil on the road. She thought about her parents. She knew she had to be brave. She had to find a way to escape for them.

The whistling stopped suddenly. The silence that came after was even worse. Sarah waited for the door handle to turn. She waited for the door to be kicked open. She waited for the man to reach in and find her. The hallway was so quiet that she could hear a clock ticking somewhere far away. The air in the closet was getting very hot and hard to breathe. She felt dizzy. She felt like she was going to faint. She leaned her head against the cool wall and waited for what would happen next. The shadow of the man was still there, visible under the crack of the door. He was not moving. He was just waiting.

Sarah felt a surge of fear. She realized that the man was not just looking for her. He was waiting for a signal. Maybe the voice on the phone was his boss. Maybe they were all coming to the office to finish the work. The work that was not done. She knew she was the work. She was the last piece of the secret that needed to be gone. She felt a deep sense of sadness for her life. Everything she loved was a lie. Her husband was a killer. Her home was built on bad money. And now, a scary man was whistling at her from outside a cleaning closet.

She held her bag even tighter. She felt the hard edges of the notebook. She knew she could not let him take it. She had to keep the proof. She had to show the world what Tom had done. Even if she was scared, she had to try. She began to look around the dark closet. She saw a heavy bottle of soap. She saw a long metal pole for a mop. She thought about using them to fight. She was a small woman, but she was fighting for her parents. She was fighting for her own life. She reached out her hand and touched the metal pole. It felt cold and strong.

The man outside moved. Sarah heard the sound of his coat brushing against the door. He was leaning closer. The whistling started again, but this time it was even lower. It was almost like a whisper. It was a song of darkness and secrets. Sarah felt her heart stop for a second time. She knew that the next few minutes would change everything. She was either going to escape, or she was going to be caught. She took a deep breath of the dusty air. She got ready to move. She was not going to let the monster win without a fight. The story of her life was a false beginning, but she wanted to make sure it had a real end.
