Episode 2: False Beginning

The hospital was very quiet, except for the sound of a machine going beep, beep, beep. Sarah stood in the hallway for a long time before she could move. The walls were a very bright white color. The floor was so shiny that she could see the lights reflecting off of it. It was a very cold place. The air smelled like soap and medicine. Sarah felt very small in the big hallway. She was still wet from the rain outside. Her hair was messy and her coat was damp. She was shaking, but not because she was cold. She was shaking because she was afraid. She looked at the signs on the wall. They had numbers on them to tell people where to go. She looked for the number the lady at the front desk told her. She was looking for Room 402.

Sarah walked slowly down the long hallway. Every time her shoes hit the floor, they made a soft noise. She passed other rooms. Some doors were closed and some were open. She saw people in white coats walking fast. They looked very busy. Nobody looked at Sarah. She felt like a ghost walking through the halls. Her heart was beating very fast. She was thinking about Tom. She was thinking about his smile and his kind eyes. She wanted to see him so much, but she was also very scared of what she would find. She finally reached the door that had the number 402 on it.

Sarah stood in the doorway of Room 402, afraid to take a single step inside. She held her breath and looked into the room. The room was small and very clean. There was a big bed in the middle. There lay Tom, but he did not look like the man she knew. The Tom she knew was strong. He was always moving and talking. He was always helping people. But the man in the bed was very still. His face was pale, and he was covered in white bandages. The bandages were on his head and his arms. He looked very hurt. There were many tubes and wires coming out of him. They were connected to a big machine. The machine was the thing making the beep, beep, beep noise.

The doctor came into the room very quietly. He was an old man with gray hair and a kind face. He looked at Sarah and gave her a small, sad smile. He told Sarah that Tom was in a deep sleep called a coma. He explained that a coma is like a very long sleep that you cannot wake up from easily. The doctor said that Tom’s body was working hard to get better. He said that Tom could not hear her right now. He could not move his hands or his feet. He was just resting. Sarah felt a big tear fall down her cheek. She could not believe this was happening. Her hero was lying there and he could not even say her name.

Sarah finally walked into the room. She felt like she was walking through deep water. Everything felt heavy. She sat in a hard chair next to the bed. She took Tom’s hand in her own. His hand was very cold. It felt like a stone. Sarah tried to warm it up with her own hands. She rubbed his fingers gently. She looked at his face. Even with the bandages, he was still the man she loved. She cried until her eyes were red and her throat hurt. She cried for their ten happy years. She cried because she was scared of the future. She did not know what to do without him.

She held his cold hand and prayed for him to wake up. She closed her eyes and thought about all the good things Tom had done. She thought about how he helped the poor people in their town. She thought about the way he always brought her flowers on Fridays. She leaned close to his ear so she could whisper to him. "Please come back to me, Tom," she whispered into the silence. Her voice was very shaky. "I am right here. I am not going anywhere. Please open your eyes." But Tom did not move. He did not blink. He did not squeeze her hand back. He just lay there like a stone. The only sound in the room was the machine. Beep. Beep. Beep.

Sarah stayed in the room for a long time. The sky outside the window stayed dark. The rain was still hitting the glass. She felt very alone. She looked at the wedding ring on her finger. It still felt very heavy. She wondered if Tom was dreaming. She wondered if he could feel her holding his hand. The hospital was so quiet that she could hear her own heart. It felt like time had stopped. She did not want to leave him. She was afraid that if she left, something bad would happen. She just sat there and watched him breathe. His chest went up and down very slowly.

After a while, a nurse came into the room. The nurse was a young woman with a soft voice. She was carrying a small plastic bag. She looked at Sarah with pity. She knew that Sarah was very sad. The nurse walked over to the bed and checked the machine. Then she turned to Sarah. "I have something for you," the nurse said quietly. She gave Sarah the small bag of Tom’s things. The nurse said these were the things Tom had with him when the accident happened. Sarah took the bag with a shaking hand. She did not want to look inside, but she knew she had to.

Sarah opened the small bag. The first thing she saw was Tom’s watch. The glass on the watch was cracked. The hands on the watch were not moving anymore. They had stopped at the exact time of the accident. It was a silver watch that she had given him for their anniversary. It made her very sad to see it broken. Next, she pulled out his wallet. It was a brown leather wallet. It felt heavy. She opened it and saw a picture of her inside. There was also some money and some cards. Everything looked normal. It was just the wallet of a man who was going home from work.

But then, Sarah found something else in the bag. She reached her fingers to the bottom and felt something hard and metal. She pulled it out and looked at it. It was a small, golden key Sarah had never seen before. It was very shiny and it looked very old. It was not a key for their house. They had silver keys for their house. It was not a key for Tom’s office. He had big, heavy keys for that. This key was small and pretty. It had a little design on the top that looked like a bird. Sarah looked at the key for a long time. She wondered what the key was for. Why did Tom have a secret key?

Sarah felt a little bit of a mystery starting in her head. Tom never kept secrets from her. They told each other everything. Or, at least she thought they did. She held the golden key tight in her hand. It felt warm now. She looked at Tom again. She wanted to ask him about the key. She wanted to ask him where it came from. But Tom was still in his deep sleep. He could not tell her anything. The key felt like a big question mark. Sarah put the key in her pocket. She decided she would find out what it opened later. Right now, she just wanted Tom to be okay.

The nurse told Sarah that she should try to get some rest. She said that Sarah could go to the waiting room or go home for a little bit. Sarah did not want to go home. The house would be too empty and quiet. But she did need to walk around. Her legs felt stiff from sitting in the chair. She stood up and kissed Tom on his forehead. His skin was cool. "I will be back very soon," she whispered. She walked out of Room 402 and back into the long white hallway. The hallway felt even bigger now. The lights seemed even brighter.

Sarah started walking toward the elevator. She was thinking about the golden key in her pocket. She was also thinking about the strange black car she saw across the street from her house. Was the car following her? Was the car related to the accident? She felt like there were many shadows around her. She felt like she was being watched. She walked faster. She wanted to get some water and then go back to Tom’s room. She felt safer when she was near him, even if he was asleep.

Just then, a tall man in a dark suit walked past the room and stared at her with very mean eyes. Sarah stopped walking. She felt a cold shiver run down her back again. This man was very tall. He had black hair that was combed back very neatly. His suit was very expensive and dark. He did not look like a doctor. He did not look like a nurse. He looked like someone who did not belong in a hospital. He walked very straight and his face did not have a smile. He looked very serious and very dangerous.

The man did not say anything to Sarah. He did not say hello. He did not ask if she was okay. He just kept walking. But as he passed her, he turned his head and looked right into her eyes. His eyes were very mean. They were dark and cold. It felt like he was looking right through her. It was a look that made Sarah feel very afraid. It was the kind of look a hunter gives to a little animal. Sarah held her breath until the man walked around a corner and she could not see him anymore.

Sarah stood still in the middle of the hallway. Her heart was pounding so hard she could feel it in her neck. Who was that man? Why was he looking at her like that? Did he know Tom? Did he know about the golden key in her pocket? Sarah felt like she was in a scary movie. Everything that was happening was very strange. First the accident, then the black car, then the golden key, and now this mean man. She felt like she was in the middle of a big, dark secret.

She turned around and ran back to Room 402. She felt like she needed to be close to Tom. She went back inside and closed the door. She sat back down in the hard chair and held Tom’s hand again. She felt a little bit safer inside the room, but she was still very worried. She looked at the door. She expected the mean man to walk through it at any moment. But the door stayed closed. The only sound was the beep, beep, beep of the machine. Sarah looked at Tom and wondered if he knew the tall man. She wondered if the tall man was the one in the black car.

Sarah took the golden key out of her pocket again. She looked at the little bird on the top. The key was so small, but it felt very important. She knew that this key was the start of something. She just did not know if it was something good or something bad. She looked at the broken watch and the brown wallet. These were the things of the man she knew. But the key was something else. The key was part of a Tom she did not know. Sarah felt a little bit of doubt in her heart. Did she really know everything about her husband?

She stayed by Tom’s side for the rest of the night. She did not sleep. She just watched him and listened to the machine. Every time she heard a noise in the hallway, she jumped. She thought it might be the man in the dark suit coming back. She thought about the accident again. The voice on the phone said it was a very bad accident. But what if it was not an accident? What if someone wanted Tom to get hurt? Sarah shook her head. No, that could not be true. Tom was a hero. Everyone loved him. Why would anyone want to hurt a good man like Tom?

As the sun began to come up, the room turned a soft gray color. The rain had finally stopped, but the sky was still cloudy. Sarah felt very tired. Her eyes were heavy and her body ached. She looked at Tom’s pale face one more time. He still had not moved. He was still in his deep coma. Sarah felt a deep sadness, but she also felt a little bit of strength. she had to be strong for Tom. She had to find out what was happening. She had to find out about the black car, the mean man, and the golden key. The story was just starting, and Sarah knew she had to find the truth.

Who do you think the tall man in the dark suit is, and why was he looking at Sarah so meanly?

What do you think the small golden key with the bird on it opens? Is it a box, a door, or a secret locker?

Do you think Sarah should tell the police about the man in the hallway and the black car she saw earlier?

If Tom wakes up, do you think he will tell Sarah the truth about the key, or will he keep it a secret?
