Episode 1: False Beginning:

The gold wedding ring on Sarah’s finger felt very heavy as the sky turned black. It was a bright and pretty ring, but tonight it felt like a weight. She looked at her hand and saw the light from the lamp shine on the gold. The ring was a circle that never ended, just like her love for Tom. Sarah sat by the big window in her living room. She liked this window because she could see the street. She could see when Tom’s car turned the corner to come home. But tonight, the street was hard to see. The clouds were thick and dark like a giant blanket over the world. The sun had gone away a long time ago. Now, only the rain was left.

Sarah watched the rain hit the glass. The water drops looked like small, angry fingers tapping on the window. They made a sound like pitter patter, pitter patter. It was a cold night, but Sarah was warm inside her house. She had a soft rug under her feet. She had a cozy chair. But she did not feel happy. She felt like something was not right. She was waiting for Tom to come home from his law office. Tom worked very hard. He was a very busy man, but he always came home for dinner. Sarah looked at the clock on the wall. The clock said it was late. Tom was usually home by now. She thought about her husband and a small smile came to her face.

She thought about how lucky she was to have him. Tom was a hero in their town. Everyone knew Tom. He was a lawyer, but he was a special kind of lawyer. He did not just work for money. He was a lawyer who helped poor people for free. If someone had a problem and no money, Tom would say, "Do not worry. I will help you." He was a very good man. He always had a smile for the person who cleaned the floors. He had a kind word for the person who sold him bread. He was like a bright light in a dark room. Sarah loved him more than all the stars in the sky. She could not count how much she loved him. It was a very big love.

They had been married for ten long, happy years. Ten years is a lot of days. It is a lot of mornings eating breakfast together. It is a lot of nights watching movies. Sarah remembered their wedding day. The sun was hot and the flowers were pink. Tom looked at her and said he would love her forever. He had kept his promise. For ten years, they were the best of friends. They never had big fights. They always talked about their dreams. Sarah felt like she was in a beautiful dream that would never end. She looked at the gold ring again. It was a symbol of their ten happy years. She touched the ring with her other hand. It felt cold now. The room felt a little colder too.

The rain outside was getting louder. The wind started to blow against the house. The trees moved back and forth in the dark. Sarah felt a little bit lonely. She wished Tom would walk through the door right now. She wanted to hear his deep voice. She wanted to see his big smile. She wanted him to tell her about his day. She thought about the people he helped today. Maybe he helped a mother find a home. Maybe he helped a man get his job back. Tom was always doing good things. That was why everyone loved him. Sarah was so proud to be his wife. She felt like the luckiest woman in the whole world.

Suddenly, the telephone on the table made a very loud, scary noise. Ring! Ring! The sound broke the quiet in the room. It was so loud that Sarah jumped in her chair. Her heart began to beat very fast. Usually, a phone call is a happy thing. But tonight, the sound felt wrong. It was a sharp noise that hurt her ears. Sarah looked at the phone. It was a small black phone sitting on a wooden table. It just kept ringing and ringing. Sarah did not want to pick it up. She felt a cold shiver run down her back. It felt like an ice cube was moving down her spine. She felt very afraid, but she did not know why.

She stood up slowly. Her legs felt like jelly. She walked over to the table. The phone was still making that loud noise. Sarah reached out her hand. Her hand would not stop shaking. She tried to hold it still, but she could not. She was trembling like a leaf in the wind. She picked up the phone and put it to her ear. She did not say anything at first. She just listened to the sound of the rain outside. Her breath was coming out in short puffs. She was very, very scared.

Finally, she spoke. "Hello?" she said. Her voice was very small.

A deep, sad voice answered her. It was a voice she did not know. The man on the other end sounded very serious. "Is this Sarah?" the voice asked.

Sarah felt her throat get tight. "Yes," she whispered. "This is Sarah. Who are you?"

The man did not answer her question. Instead, he said something that made the world stand still. "Sarah, I am calling from the hospital. There has been a very bad accident."

Sarah felt her heart stop beating for a second. It was like the whole world went silent. She could not hear the rain anymore. She could not hear the wind. All she could hear were those words: a very bad accident. Her mind began to race. An accident? Was it Tom? It had to be Tom. He was the one who was not home yet.

"What happened?" Sarah asked. She started to cry. The tears were hot on her face. "Is Tom okay? Please tell me he is okay!"

The voice on the phone stayed deep and sad. "The accident was very big, Sarah. Your husband, Tom, was in his car. Another car hit him very hard. He is here at the hospital now. The doctors are working very fast, but he cannot wake up. He is in a very deep sleep, and we do not know when he will open his eyes. You should come here right away."

Sarah felt like she was falling. She felt like the floor was opening up beneath her. Tom was hurt. Her hero was in a hospital bed. He could not wake up. This could not be real. This had to be a bad dream. She wanted to wake up and see Tom sleeping next to her. But the voice on the phone was real. The rain on the window was real. The fear in her chest was very real.

"I am coming!" Sarah cried. "I will be there as fast as I can!"

She hung up the phone. She did not even put it back correctly. She just let it fall. She ran to the closet and grabbed her big blue coat. she did not even look for her umbrella. She did not care about getting wet. She just wanted to get to Tom. She opened the front door and the cold air hit her face. The rain was falling very hard now. It was like a wall of water. Sarah stepped out onto the porch. She was crying so hard she could barely see.

She ran down the steps. The water was splashing around her feet. She was thinking about Tom’s face. She was thinking about his eyes. She wanted him to open them. She wanted him to see her. She ran toward her car in the driveway. She was shaking so much that she dropped her keys in a puddle. She had to reach down into the cold, dirty water to find them. Her hands were freezing. Her hair was soaking wet. She did not care. She just needed to move.

Do you think Tom’s accident was really an accident, or did someone cause it on purpose?

If you were Sarah, would you go to the hospital right away?

What do you think Sarah will find when she finally gets to the hospital?
