Episode 9: The Governor's Silent Daughter
The stadium was a very big place. It was like a giant bowl made of hard gray stone and cold steel. It was filled with thousands of people from every part of the country. They were all wearing the special colors of Governor Solomon. Some people wore bright green shirts and others wore red hats. They were all waving flags that had the Governor’s name written in big gold letters. The flags moved in the wind like waves on a big blue ocean. The people were shouting the Governor’s name over and over again. Solomon! Solomon! Solomon! The sound was so loud that it felt like it was shaking the ground under their feet. It was a very hot day but the people did not care. They were there to see their leader. They were there to see a miracle.
To the people in the crowd, Governor Solomon was like a giant. They saw him as a protector and a provider. They thought he was the one who kept the city safe and gave them food to eat. They did not see the bad things he had done in the dark. They did not see his cold heart or the blood that was on his hands from many years ago. They only saw the powerful man who appeared on the giant television screens. The screens were so big that the Governor’s face looked like a mountain. His smile was many feet wide and his eyes looked like they were watching every single person at the same time. To the crowd, he was not just a man. He was like a hero from a storybook. He was a man who seemed to have all the answers.
But behind the big red curtain of the stage, the feeling was very different. It was not a happy feeling. It was a feeling of cold fear. Mr. Kalu and Elara stood in the shadows. They could hear the roar of the audience outside. It did not sound like people cheering anymore. To Mr. Kalu, it sounded like a hungry beast. It sounded like a monster that was waiting to swallow them up. The air behind the curtain was dusty and very warm. Mr. Kalu could feel the sweat running down his back. He was wearing a dark blue suit that the Governor had given him. It was made of expensive cloth but it felt like a cage. It was too tight and too stiff. He felt like he could not breathe properly.
The Governor was standing right next to them. He was getting ready to walk out. He looked at himself in a small mirror and fixed his hair. He looked very calm. He looked like a man who was about to win a big prize. But then he turned to Elara. His face changed. The fake smile went away and was replaced by something much meaner. He leaned in very close to his daughter. He whispered into her ear. He spoke just loud enough for only her and Mr. Kalu to hear. His voice was like a sharp knife. Smile and say the words I gave you, the Governor hissed. His eyes were dark and full of hate. If you do not say those words, the teacher’s village dies today. I have men there right now. They will burn everything. Do not test me, Elara.
Mr. Kalu felt a cold chill run through his whole body. He thought about his mother back in the small village. He thought about the trees and the little houses. He thought about the people he had known his whole life. The Governor was a monster. He was ready to kill many innocent people just to keep his power. Mr. Kalu wanted to scream. He wanted to run away. But he knew he had to stay strong. He looked at Elara and saw that she was shaking. Her white dress was moving because her heart was beating so fast. She looked like a small bird caught in a storm. She looked at Mr. Kalu with eyes that were full of a silent plea for help.
The Governor did not wait for an answer. He stepped out from behind the curtain and onto the stage. The noise from the crowd was like a giant explosion. It was deafening. He spoke to the people for a long time. He told them about his laws and his strength. He told them that he was the greatest leader in the world. Then he made his voice sound soft and sad. He told them that today was a day of miracles. He told them that his daughter was finally going to speak. He looked back at the curtains and called for them. Elara, come out and show the world your voice! the Governor shouted. He was smiling for the cameras again.
Mr. Kalu led Elara out into the bright lights. The sun was very strong and the stage lamps were even stronger. For a second, he could not see anything but white light. It was blinding. When his eyes finally adjusted, he saw the thousands of faces. They were all staring at the young girl in the white dress. The stadium went completely silent. It was so quiet that you could hear the wind blowing through the flags. It was a heavy silence. It was a silence that felt like it was waiting for a secret to be told. The Governor reached out and took the microphone. He looked at Mr. Kalu. He expected the teacher to take the microphone and speak for Elara. He expected the teacher to be the one who told the lies.
But Mr. Kalu did something that no one expected. He did not take the microphone to speak for her. Instead, he walked over to Elara. He looked into her eyes and gave her a very small nod. It was a nod of courage. He took the microphone and placed it directly into her small, trembling hands. He was giving her the power. He was giving her the choice. He stood back and let her stand alone in the center of the stage. The Governor’s smile froze on his face. He did not like this change in the plan. He started to move toward them but he could not do it too fast because the cameras were watching.
Elara held the microphone close to her face. She looked at the giant crowd. She saw the little children and the old people. She saw the hope in their eyes. Then she looked at her father. He was staring at her with eyes that were full of a deadly warning. He was trying to use his fear to keep her quiet. Finally, she looked at Mr. Kalu. He was standing tall and brave. Elara took a very deep breath. It was the biggest breath she had ever taken in her life. She opened her mouth and a sound came out. It was not a small sound. It was a clear and steady voice. It was a voice that had been hidden for ten years and now it was finally free.
My father is not a hero, Elara said. Her voice went through the big speakers and filled the whole stadium. It was so clear that every single person heard it. The crowd made a sound like a giant wave hitting the shore. It was a collective gasp of shock. Thousands of people all breathed in at the same time. They could not believe what they were hearing. The Governor’s daughter was calling him a liar. Elara did not stop there. She knew she had to finish the story. She knew she had to tell the truth before the Governor could stop her.
Ten years ago, I saw him take a man into the woods, Elara continued. Her voice was even stronger now. She was not a scared little girl anymore. She was a witness. I saw him use his power to make sure that man never came back. I saw what he did in the dark. I stayed silent for a long time because I was afraid. I was afraid of the man who lived in my house. I was afraid of his threats. But I am not afraid anymore. The silence is finally broken. My father is a man of secrets and lies. She looked right at the giant screen where her face was showing. She wanted everyone to see that she was telling the truth.
The Governor turned a bright red color. He looked like he was going to explode with rage. He was not a hero anymore. He was just an angry man who had been caught. He lunged toward Elara. He wanted to grab the microphone. He wanted to pull her off the stage and hide her away again. She is sick! the Governor screamed. His voice was cracked and ugly. She is lying to you! She does not know what she is saying! Do not listen to her! He was waving his arms at the guards. He wanted them to come and take her away. But the guards were standing still. They were listening to the truth just like everyone else.
The Governor was losing his power in front of the whole world. He could not stop the words that had already been said. He turned his anger toward Mr. Kalu. He thought it was the teacher’s fault. He thought if he could hurt Mr. Kalu, he could still win. He ran over and grabbed Mr. Kalu by the shirt. He was very strong and very mean. He pulled the teacher’s face close to his own. He snarled like a wild animal. His eyes were full of a dark and terrible fire. He did not care about the people in the stadium anymore. He did not care about the cameras. He only wanted to cause pain.
I told you I would silence you both! the Governor snarled into Mr. Kalu’s face. He was shouting so loud that his neck turned purple. He was shaking the teacher back and forth. My men are already at your village! he yelled. They are going to burn every house to the ground! Your mother is dead! You are all dead! He was making a terrible confession. He was telling everyone exactly who he was. He thought he was whispering but in his rage he was shouting at the top of his lungs. He wanted Mr. Kalu to feel the fear. He wanted to see the teacher break.
But the Governor was a very foolish man. He was so blinded by his anger that he forgot one very important thing. He forgot about the small black microphone that was clipped to Mr. Kalu’s chest. The guards had given it to the teacher so they could listen to his whispers. But Mr. Kalu had turned that microphone on. He had made sure that it was connected to the giant speakers of the stadium. Every single hateful word the Governor was saying was being heard by every person in the crowd. Every threat to burn the village was being broadcast to the whole city.
The people in the stadium were not cheering anymore. They were not waving flags. They were listening to the monster. They heard him talk about killing an old woman. They heard him talk about burning a whole village. The truth was not just a whisper anymore. It was a roar. The giant screens showed the Governor’s face, but it did not look like the face of a hero. It looked like the face of a villain from a nightmare. The Governor was still grabbing Mr. Kalu’s shirt, not realizing that he had just told the whole world his own secrets. He had just confessed to his own crimes.
Mr. Kalu looked at the Governor and he was not afraid anymore. He knew that the truth had won. He looked at the red light on the camera that was still blinking. The whole world was watching the Governor show his true self. The silence of the daughter had become the loudest voice in the land. The Governor was still shouting and shaking him, but his words were only making things worse for himself. The crowd began to move. They were not cheering for Solomon anymore. They were angry. A giant sound of shouting began to rise from the stadium, but this time it was not for the Governor. It was against him.
Elara stood by the microphone and watched her father. She saw the man she had been afraid of for ten years. He looked small now. He looked weak. She had taken away his greatest weapon. She had taken away his secrets. She walked over to Mr. Kalu and stood by his side. They were both standing against the man who had tried to destroy them. The suspense was so high that it felt like the air was about to catch fire. The Governor looked at the crowd and then at the giant screen. He finally realized that the microphone on Mr. Kalu’s chest was on. He realized that everyone had heard everything. His face went from red to a pale, ghostly white. He was trapped by his own words.
