Episode 8: The Governor's Silent Daughter
The stadium was very large. It was like a giant bowl made of concrete and steel. It was filled with thousands of people from every part of the country. They were all wearing the colors of Governor Solomon. Some people wore green shirts, and others wore red hats. They were all waving flags that had the Governor’s name written in big gold letters. The flags moved in the wind like waves on a big ocean. The people were shouting the Governor’s name over and over again. Solomon! Solomon! Solomon! The sound was so loud that it felt like it was shaking the ground under their feet. It was a very hot day, but the people did not care. They were there to see their leader.
To the people in the crowd, Governor Solomon was a giant. They saw him as a protector and a provider. They thought he was the one who kept the city safe and gave them food to eat. They did not see the bad things he had done in the dark. They did not see his cold heart or the blood that was on his hands from many years ago. They only saw the powerful man who appeared on the giant television screens. The screens were so big that the Governor’s face looked like a mountain. His smile was many feet wide, and his eyes looked like they were watching every single person at the same time. To the crowd, he was not just a man. He was like a hero from a storybook.
But behind the big stage, the feeling was very different. Mr. Kalu and Elara stood behind the heavy red curtains. The curtains were made of thick velvet. They were so heavy that they blocked out most of the light, but they could not block out the sound. The roar of the crowd came through the fabric. It did not sound like people cheering anymore. To Mr. Kalu, it sounded like a hungry beast. It sounded like a monster that was waiting to swallow them up. The air behind the curtain was dusty and very warm. Mr. Kalu could feel the sweat running down his back. He was wearing the fine suit the Governor had given him, but it felt like a cage.
Mr. Kalu looked at Elara. She was standing very still. Her white dress was so bright that it seemed to glow in the shadows. She looked like a small, beautiful doll made of porcelain. Her hands were folded in front of her, and her head was bowed. She was very quiet, but Mr. Kalu could see that she was brave. He knew that she was thinking about the secret they shared. He knew she was thinking about the three words she had written on his hand. He killed him. Mr. Kalu reached out and took her hand. Her fingers were cold, even though the air was hot. He squeezed her hand to let her know he was there. He wanted her to feel his strength. He wanted her to know that he would not let go.
The Governor was standing just a few feet away from them. He was waiting for his turn to go out. He was looking at a small mirror and fixing his hair. He looked very calm. He looked like a man who was about to win a prize. He did not look like a man who had just threatened to burn a village to the ground. Mr. Kalu thought about his mother in the village. He thought about the guards standing outside her house with their guns. He felt a deep pain in his heart. He wanted to run away. He wanted to take Elara and fly far away from this scary place. But he knew he could not run. The only way out was to go forward.
Suddenly, the music started. It was loud and fast music with many drums. This was the signal. The Governor took a deep breath and stepped out from behind the curtain. The moment he walked onto the stage, the noise from the crowd became deafening. It was like a giant explosion of sound. People were screaming and jumping. They were blowing whistles and throwing flowers. The Governor walked to the front of the stage with his arms wide open. He looked like he loved everyone in the stadium. He looked like a father who was coming home to his children.
The Governor began to speak into the microphone. His voice was very loud. It came out of the big speakers and filled the whole stadium. He spoke about his laws. He told the people that he was making the city strong. He told them that he was the only one who could give them a good future. He talked about his strength and his power. The people cheered for every word. They did not know that his words were like empty boxes. They did not know that he was hiding a very dark secret behind his big smile.
Then, the Governor’s voice changed. It became very soft and low. He made it sound like he was very sad. He reached up and wiped a fake tear from his eye. He made sure the giant screens showed his sad face to everyone. For ten years, my heart has been very heavy, he told the crowd. He sounded like he was about to cry. My heart was heavy because my beloved daughter could not speak. I have spent every day praying for a miracle. I have spent so much money to find the best doctors and the best teachers in the whole land.
The crowd went very quiet. They wanted to hear about the miracle. The Governor continued his speech. And today, I have a wonderful surprise for all of you. A miracle has happened! My daughter, Elara, has found her voice. She wants to come out and tell you all how much she loves this city. She wants to tell you that I am a good father. The Governor looked back at the curtains. He had a big, fake smile on his face. Elara, come out and show the whole world your beautiful voice!
This was it. This was the moment Mr. Kalu had been waiting for and fearing. He felt his legs shaking. It felt like his knees were made of jelly. He was so afraid that he thought he might fall down. But he looked at Elara, and he saw that she was looking at him. She was waiting for him to lead her. Mr. Kalu took a deep breath. He held Elara’s hand firmly. He reached into the pocket of his jacket. He felt the small switch for the hidden broadcast device. He had hidden it there very carefully. If he flipped that switch, the whole city would hear the truth, not just the people in the stadium.
The curtains began to part. The heavy red fabric moved to the sides, and a bright, blinding light hit them. It was the light from the sun and the giant stage lamps. For a second, Mr. Kalu could not see anything. He could only see white light. Then, his eyes began to adjust. He saw the sea of people. There were thousands of them, stretching out as far as he could see. They were all staring at the girl in the white dress. The stadium was so silent that you could hear the wind blowing. No one was cheering now. Everyone was waiting to hear the girl speak.
Mr. Kalu led Elara to the middle of the stage. Each step felt like a mile. The Governor was standing there, holding out his hand to Elara. He looked like a kind father waiting for a hug. He was smiling for the cameras, and his face on the giant screens looked perfect. But when Mr. Kalu looked at the Governor’s eyes, he saw something else. The Governor’s eyes were not smiling. They were full of a cold and deadly warning. They were eyes that said, remember your village. They were eyes that said, if you make a mistake, you will die.
The Governor reached out and took Elara’s other hand. Now, the three of them were standing together in the center of the stage. The Governor was on one side, and Mr. Kalu was on the other. Elara was in the middle. The big microphone was right in front of her. The Governor leaned in and whispered something very quietly. Now, Elara. Tell them what we practiced. His voice was like a sharp knife. He was still smiling, but he was squeezing Elara’s hand very hard. He was trying to hurt her just enough so she would remember to be afraid.
Mr. Kalu felt the switch in his pocket. He knew that the guards were watching him from the sides of the stage. He knew that if he moved his hand too much, they might shoot him. He knew that the Governor’s men were in his village, waiting for a phone call. But he also knew that he could not let the lie continue. He looked at the thousands of people in the crowd. They were waiting for the truth. He looked at Elara. She was looking at the microphone. Her lips were trembling. She was about to speak her very first words in public.
This was the moment of no return. Everything they had done for the last few weeks had led to this one second. The whole world was watching. The cameras were zoomed in on Elara’s face. Mr. Kalu’s heart was beating so fast that it felt like it would jump out of his chest. He held her hand one last time and gave it a small squeeze. He was telling her to be brave. He was telling her that he was ready. He felt for the switch again. His finger was right on the button. The silence in the stadium was heavy and thick. It felt like the whole world was holding its breath, waiting to see what would happen next.
The Governor’s smile stayed on his face, but his hand was shaking with anger and fear. He was waiting for the words of praise. He was waiting for the people to cheer for him again. He was sure that his threats had worked. He was sure that he had won. But he did not know about the second microphone. He did not know about the strength of a teacher and a daughter who had found their courage. The sun was hot, the lights were bright, and the truth was just one whisper away. The moment had finally come.
