How My Valentine Went
The moment the velvet box left Leo’s hand and disappeared into the dark air, the world seemed to go very quiet. For a tiny second, there was no wind. There was no sound. There was only the sight of that small box falling down toward the black water. It looked like a tiny bird falling from the sky. Then, the silence was broken by a sound so loud it felt like it could shake the stars. It was the scream of Chief Benson.
He did not sound like a rich man anymore. He sounded like a wild animal that had lost its most precious prize. He ran to the edge of the bridge and grabbed the cold stone railing with both hands. He looked down into the darkness, but the water had already swallowed the box.
Maya shrieked at the top of her lungs. It was a high, sharp sound that hurt Leo’s ears. She looked at the water as if her own soul had fallen in with that ring. She knew that the ring was her ticket to a life of diamonds and fur. She knew that without that microchip, she had nothing to bargain with. She looked at Leo with eyes that were full of pure hate. She was no longer the girl he loved. She was a stranger who wanted him to suffer. To Maya, that ring was not a symbol of love; it was a pile of money, and Leo had just thrown that money away.
"Kill him!" the Chief roared. His face was bright red, and his neck was thick with anger. He turned away from the water and pointed a shaking finger at Leo. "Viktor, kill him right now! I want him at the bottom of the river with that ring! He has ruined everything!"
The big guard, Viktor, did not wait. He moved his finger toward the trigger of the gun. The blue light from the taser on his belt was still sparking, but the gun was the real danger. The other guards began to lunge forward too. They were like big dogs jumping at a bone. They were fast, and they were very strong. Leo knew that he had only one second to make a choice. If he stayed on the bridge, he would die. If he tried to run back toward the city, they would catch him before he could take ten steps. The bridge was too long and there were too many guards.
But Leo had a secret that the Chief did not know. Leo had spent his whole childhood in this city. When he was a little boy, long before he became a librarian who lived among books, he spent every summer at this very river. He and his friends would spend all day swimming in these currents. He knew exactly how the water moved. He knew how to hold his breath for a very long time. He knew that the river was dangerous for most people, but for him, it was a place he knew by heart. It was his playground.
Leo did not think twice. He did not let fear stop his legs. Instead of running away from the guards, he ran toward the railing. He put his hands on the stone and pushed himself up. He felt the cold stone under his palms. It was rough and icy.
"Stop him!" Maya screamed, her voice cracking in the wind.
The guards reached out to grab his jacket, but their fingers only caught the air. Leo took a deep breath, filling his lungs with as much air as they could hold. He closed his eyes and pushed off. Then, he jumped.
He felt the wind rushing past his ears. It was a strange feeling, like falling through the sky. He felt like he was flying for a short moment. Then, the cold water hit him. It did not feel like water; it felt like a wall of solid ice hitting his whole body. The cold was so strong that it made his body feel like it was breaking into a thousand pieces. The river was very deep and very fast. He sank down into the darkness, the water pulling at his clothes and his shoes, trying to drag him even deeper.
Above him, the world was full of noise. Even through the heavy water, he could hear the muffled sound of gunshots. Pop! Pop! Pop! The bullets hit the surface of the water like angry hornets. Leo saw tiny streaks of white light in the water as the bullets passed near him. He knew he had to stay deep. He knew he had to swim as far away as he could as fast as he could. If he came up for air now, he would be an easy target for Viktor.
He moved his arms and legs with all his might. The current was very strong, but Leo used it to his advantage. He did not fight the river; he let the river carry him downstream. He swam under the water, keeping his eyes open even though it was dark and stinging. He swam past old pieces of wood and smooth rocks on the riverbed. His lungs began to feel like they were on fire. They were screaming for air.
His chest felt tight, as if a giant were squeezing him with both hands. He wanted to go up to the surface to breathe, but he knew the guards were still up there on the bridge, looking for his head to appear.
He stayed under. He counted the seconds in his head to keep himself calm. One. Two. Three. He swam further and further away. He moved away from the bright lights of the bridge. He moved away from the angry screams of the Chief and the bitter tears of Maya. He was alone in the deep, cold heart of the river. The water was silent and heavy around him.
He felt the current getting faster. This was part of the river he remembered well. It was a stretch where the water moved quickly toward a bend. He used his last bit of strength to kick harder. He felt like his lungs were about to burst. He needed air more than anything in the world. He waited until he felt he could not go another second.
When he finally felt like his heart was going to explode, Leo kicked hard and moved toward the surface. He broke the water quietly. He did not splash or make a loud noise. He just took a long, deep breath of the cold night air. It was the best breath of his life. It tasted like freedom.
He looked back and saw the bridge far away. It was about a mile behind him now. The lights of the black SUV looked like tiny, harmless dots in the distance. He had made it. He was safe from the guards and their guns.
But as he bobbed in the water, trying to catch his breath, he realized he was not alone. The river was quiet, but there was a soft sound of water splashing against wood.
Leo turned his head. A few feet away, a small, dark boat was floating. It had no lights on, and it was painted a dark color so it was hard to see in the night. Leo felt a rush of fear. He thought maybe the Chief had more men waiting downstream. He tried to swim away toward the tall grass at the edge of the river to hide.
"Leo! Stop! It is me," a voice called out.
It was a woman’s voice. It was calm and very serious. Leo stopped swimming and looked at the boat. As it drifted closer in the moonlight, he saw a figure sitting at the back. It was Mrs. Adele. She was holding a small oar to keep the boat steady. She looked at him as he struggled to stay afloat in his wet, heavy clothes.
Leo swam toward the boat and grabbed the side. His hands were so cold he could barely feel the wood. He was shivering so hard that the boat shook. Mrs. Adele reached out her hand. It was a strong hand, and she helped him pull himself over the side. He tumbled into the bottom of the boat, gasping for air and shaking from the ice-cold water. He was soaking wet, and his old suit, the one he had worn to propose to Maya, was ruined and heavy with mud.
He looked up at Mrs. Adele, expecting to see a smile. He thought she would be happy that he had escaped. He thought she would be glad that the Chief did not get the microchip. But as the moonlight hit her face, Leo saw something that made him feel even colder than the river water.
Mrs. Adele was not smiling. Her face was as hard as stone. Her eyes were dark and full of a serious look that Leo had not seen before. She looked at him not as a friend she had saved, but as someone who had made a very big mistake. The silence between them was heavy and uncomfortable. Leo realized that even though he had survived the jump and the guards, the danger was not over. Mrs. Adele was waiting for him, but she wasn't smiling anymore.
Leo survived the jump because he knew the river from his childhood. Do you think his past as a regular boy is his secret weapon against the rich Chief?
Why do you think Mrs. Adele stopped smiling when she saw Leo? Is she angry that the ring is at the bottom of the river?
Maya seemed more upset about the ring than about Leo almost being killed. Does this prove she never loved him at all?
How will Leo get the ring back from the bottom of the river, or is it gone forever?
What do you think is Mrs. Adele’s next plan now that the Chief is in a total rage?
The jump was just the beginning! Leo is out of the water, but he is in even deeper trouble. The Chief is screaming for blood, and Mrs. Adele looks like she has a secret of her own. What happens when the only proof of the crime is at the bottom of a dark river?
