How My Valentine Went

The bottom of the small wooden boat was wet and cold. Leo lay there for a long time, just trying to get his breath back. His lungs felt like they had been scrubbed with sand, and his skin was blue from the freezing river water. He looked up at the sky, watching the stars twinkle peacefully. It was hard to believe that just a few minutes ago, he was standing on a bridge with a gun pointed at his head. He looked at the woman sitting at the back of the boat. Mrs. Adele was holding the oars tight, but she was not moving. She was just staring at him with a look of pure anger.

"You idiot!" Mrs. Adele hissed. Her voice was not loud, but it was very sharp. It sounded like a snake ready to bite. She leaned forward, and the moonlight made her eyes look very bright and very scary.

Leo was shocked. He had just jumped off a very high bridge. He had almost been shot by the Chief’s guards. He had thrown away his most expensive possession to save the secret chip. He thought she would be proud of him. He thought she would say he was a hero. "I... I saved it," Leo stammered. His teeth were chattering together so hard it was difficult to talk. "I threw the box into the river. The Chief saw it go down. He thinks the chip is at the bottom of the water now. He can't get it.

We won, right?"

Mrs. Adele did not look like she had won anything. She looked like she wanted to push Leo back into the water. She shook her head and let out a long, angry sigh. "You really are just a simple librarian, aren't you? You think life is like a book where the hero makes a grand gesture and everything is okay. You threw that ring away for nothing, Leo. You threw away your money and your hope for a box of empty air."

Leo sat up slowly. He was shivering so much the boat was rocking back and forth.

"What do you mean for nothing? You said the chip was in the ring. You said the Chief’s rival hid it there. That is why they were chasing me!"

Mrs. Adele leaned even closer. She reached out and grabbed the lapel of Leo’s wet jacket. "The chip was never in that ring, Leo. I knew the Chief would be watching that pawn shop. I knew he would be tracking that piece of jewelry. I used the ring as a distraction. It was a decoy. A decoy is a fake thing used to trick people, and it worked perfectly on the Chief. And it worked on you, too."

Leo felt his heart sink even lower than the ring at the bottom of the river. "If it wasn't in the ring, then where is it? Did we lose it? Did the guards take it?"

"No," Mrs. Adele said. A small, cold smile finally touched her lips, but it was not a happy smile. "I am much smarter than my husband. When I pulled you into the shadows at the restaurant, when I first met you in that hallway, I was not just talking. I was moving. While you were shaking and crying about your lost love, I slipped the real chip into your pocket. I put it in the small inner pocket of your jacket while I was pretending to comfort you."

Leo’s jaw dropped. He could not believe what he was hearing. He reached his hand into the inner pocket of his wet suit jacket. His fingers were numb from the cold, but he felt something small and flat. He pulled it out. It was a tiny, hard square made of black plastic. It was a microchip. It was dry and safe.

Leo stared at the tiny square in his palm. He felt a mix of feelings. He was happy that the evidence was safe, but he was also very angry. He had risked his life for a decoy. He had jumped into a freezing river and almost drowned to protect a ring that did not even have the chip inside it. He had been a puppet in Mrs. Adele’s game, just like he had been a puppet in Maya’s game.

"You let me jump," Leo whispered. "You watched me stand on that railing. You saw Viktor point a gun at my head. You knew I was going to jump into that ice cold water to save a fake secret. Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because if you knew it was a fake, you wouldn't have looked so scared," Mrs. Adele replied. She began to row the boat again, her movements smooth and strong.

"The Chief is a very smart man. He can smell a lie from a mile away. He had to see the real fear in your eyes. He had to believe that you were truly desperate to keep that box away from him. Your jump was the perfect ending to the show. Now, he thinks his secret is buried in the mud, and we have the real proof right here."

Leo looked at the chip. This tiny piece of plastic held the power to ruin Chief Benson. It held the records of the stolen pension funds. It could bring justice to thousands of people. But as he looked at it, he realized he didn't feel like a winner.

He felt used. He felt like everyone in this story was just using him for their own plans. Maya used him for his love, the Chief used him for a target, and Mrs. Adele used him as a delivery boy for her evidence.

"I risked everything for this," Leo said, his voice low. "I could have died back there."

"But you didn't," Mrs. Adele said. "And now we have the keys to the kingdom. We just need to get to the city, meet my lawyers, and then the Chief will be finished. We will be rich, Leo. I will make sure you never have to work in a library again."

For a moment, Leo thought about that. He thought about having a big house and a fast car. He thought about never having to save money for three years just to buy a ring. But then he remembered the look on the faces of the old people in the library who had lost their savings. He remembered why he wanted to do this in the first place. It wasn't for the money. It was because it was the right thing to do.

But the victory did not last long. The air around the boat suddenly became very loud. It was a deep, thumping sound that made the water vibrate. Whump. Whump. Whump. A strong wind started to blow down on them from the sky, pushing the boat sideways and creating big waves.

Suddenly, a giant beam of light hit the boat. The light was so bright that Leo had to cover his eyes. It was like a piece of the sun had fallen from the sky and was pointing directly at them. The light was white and blinding.

Leo looked up through his fingers. Hovering directly over the boat was a large, black helicopter. It was low enough that Leo could see the wind from the spinning blades whipping the water into a white foam. On the side of the helicopter, there was a large gold logo. It was a crown with the letters "CB" under it.

It was the Chief’s logo.

"He found us," Mrs. Adele whispered. Her face was pale under the bright light. She stopped rowing and dropped the oars.

They floated away in the dark water, but it didn't matter now. There was nowhere to go.

A loud, booming voice came over a speaker from the helicopter. The voice was distorted and loud, echoing off the surface of the river and the trees on the shore. It sounded like the voice of a giant.

"Mrs. Adele! Leo!" the voice boomed. It was the Chief. He sounded very calm now, which made it even scarier. "You really thought a little swim in the river would be enough to hide from me? I have satellites. I have thermal cameras. I can see the heat from your bodies even in the dark."

The helicopter descended even lower. The noise was deafening now. Leo had to shout just to hear himself. "He knows! He knows we have it!"

The voice from the sky spoke again. "I saw you pull something out of your pocket, Leo. My cameras are very good. I see the chip in your hand. You were very clever to use a decoy, Adele. I almost fell for it. But I am the Chief for a reason. I always have a backup plan."

The helicopter tilted to the side, and Leo saw a man standing in the open doorway. It was Viktor. He was holding a very large gun, much bigger than the one he had on the bridge. He was pointing it directly at the middle of the small wooden boat.

"Give us the chip!" the Chief’s voice commanded over the speaker. The sound was so loud it made Leo’s teeth ache.

"Throw it into the air, and we will catch it with a net. If you do not give it to us in ten seconds, I will give Viktor the order to fire. We will sink that boat with both of you on it. The river is very deep, and no one will ever find the bodies. You have ten seconds. Ten... nine... eight..."

Leo looked at Mrs. Adele. She was frozen in fear. She looked at the chip in Leo's hand and then at the gun in the helicopter. All her plans and her clever tricks had led them to this moment. They were trapped in the middle of the river with nowhere to run and no way to hide.

Leo looked at the tiny black chip. He looked at the dark, cold water. He thought about the ring he had already thrown away. His Valentine's Day had started with a dream of love, and now it was ending with a choice between a secret and his life.

"Seven... six... five..." the voice boomed.

Viktor adjusted his aim. The light was so bright Leo could see the guard's finger tightening on the trigger. The boat was rocking violently in the wind from the helicopter blades. Leo gripped the chip tight in his hand. He looked at the sky and then at the water. He knew that whatever he did next would change his life forever.

"Four... three..."

The suspense was so high that Leo could feel his heart pounding against his ribs like a hammer. The world was full of noise and light and danger. He had to make a choice, and he had to make it now.

How do you feel about Mrs. Adele now that you know she used Leo as a decoy without telling him? Is she a good person or just another manipulator?

Do you think Leo should give the chip to the Chief to save his life and Mrs. Adele’s life?

If Leo throws the chip into the river, will it be lost forever, or does he have another trick up his sleeve?

How did the Chief find them so quickly? Does he have a spy that we don't know about?
