ABANDONED Episode Ten

Benny was sitting in the parlour, feeding her babies, when she heard a knock. When she opened the door, she froze. Standing there was Ayo, her husband who had abandoned her. He wore an old shirt and held a small nylon bag. He smiled as if nothing had happened. Without waiting for an invitation, Ayo entered and started playing with the babies. "My children, see how big you have grown," he said happily. Benny stood quietly, watching him. Her stomach and everything in her body was angry. After all she had been through, this man had the guts to show up now.

Ayo carried one of the babies and laughed loudly. "I missed you people o," he said, bouncing the child. Benny walked up to him, her face hard. "You need to hurry up and leave my house," she said firmly. Ayo looked up, shocked. "Leave? Benny, what are you saying? These are my children," he said. Benny nodded slowly. "Yes, they are your children. That’s why I allowed you to see them. But apart from that, nothing binds us together again," she said. Her voice was low but sharp. Ayo dropped the baby back in the cot and stared at her.

"You mean, after everything, you want to drive me away?" Ayo asked, confused. Benny crossed her arms. "What everything? You mean after running away and leaving me to suffer alone?" she asked. Ayo rubbed his head. "I know I did wrong. But I was ashamed. I had no money, no job, and I couldn’t face you. I thought running away was better than sitting down and watching you suffer with me."

Benny shook her head. "You should have stayed. Even if you had nothing, you should have been there. I didn't need a rich husband. I needed a man who would stand."

Ayo knelt down. "Please, Benny, forgive me. I know I failed you. But I am back now. Let us start again. I will do anything you want." Benny bent down and packed her babies’ toys into a basket. She didn’t even look at him. "You ran away when life was hard. You left me to beg strangers for food. You allowed me to be disgraced and arrested by police. You don’t deserve a second chance," she said. Ayo’s voice shook. "Please, Benny. I am not proud of what I did. I have suffered too. Give me this one last chance."

Benny stood up straight and faced him. "I have moved on, Ayo. God has wiped my tears. I don't want you in my life anymore. My children will know who their father is, but you and I are finished."

Ayo shook his head. "You can't do this. I am their father!" he shouted. Benny walked to the door and opened it wide. "Being a father is not by blood alone. It is by standing with them when they need you. You failed. And I will not allow you to come and destroy my peace," she said. Her voice was strong.

Ayo looked around the beautiful house again and sighed. "So because money entered your hand now, you feel you don't need me again," he said bitterly. Benny smiled sadly. "No, Ayo. It is because I have found strength. I don’t need a man who brings sorrow.

I need peace. I need joy. I need love. You left me empty when I needed you. Now, I am full without you," she said. Ayo picked up his nylon bag slowly. His shoulders dropped. He walked towards the door, looking back once, hoping she would call him back. But Benny said nothing.

As Ayo stepped outside, he turned and said, "I still love you, Benny." Benny shook her head. "Love is not by mouth. It is by actions. Go and learn how to love properly," she said and closed the door gently behind him. Inside the house, Benny leaned against the wall and looked around. Her babies were still playing happily, unaware of what just happened. She smiled at them. They were her future now. She was ready to raise them with strength and courage. She would teach them what true love and responsibility meant. She would not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Later that evening, Clara came visiting. Benny told her everything that happened. Clara listened quietly and nodded. "You made the right decision," Clara said. "A man who runs away when life gets hard will run again when another problem comes. You need a partner, not a burden." Benny smiled. "I have peace now. I have my children. I have a future to protect. I am no longer that helpless girl begging for love," she said. Clara hugged her warmly. "Your story is just beginning, Benny. This is just the beginning of greater things to come," she said with a big smile.

As the night came, Benny sat outside on her balcony, carrying one of the babies. The cool breeze blew gently around her. She looked up at the stars and whispered a prayer of thanks. Her journey had been full of pain, betrayal, and hardship, but she came out stronger. She would teach her children to believe in themselves and never to depend on anyone who didn’t value them. Benny smiled softly. Her life was now hers to control. She was no longer the abandoned girl crying for help. She was a mother, a fighter, and a survivor. Nothing could stop her now.

THE END.
