ABANDONED, Episode Nine
Benny's new life felt like a dream she never wanted to wake up from. She lived in a beautiful apartment with tiled floors, wide windows, and sparkling lights. Her kitchen was filled with bags of rice, beans, noodles, and different kinds of foodstuff. Her sitting room had soft sofas and a big television. Her babies no longer cried out of hunger. Her body became strong again, and her breastmilk flowed heavily. Benny bought fine baby clothes, shoes, and toys. Everywhere she looked in her house, there was something beautiful. She smiled every morning, feeling thankful for her blessings.
One morning, Benny was bathing her babies when she heard a knock on the door. She wasn’t expecting any visitors. When she opened the door, her mother stood there with a wide smile. Behind her was her father, holding a small bag. Benny stood at the door, staring at them. She hadn't seen them since the day she was abandoned at the hospital. Her mother spoke first, laughing like they were old friends. "My daughter, you have really made it o. This your house is very fine. We have come to stay with you," she said, pushing forward.
Benny moved slightly away from the door, allowing them to enter. They walked around, admiring the house as if it was theirs. Her father sat down comfortably, stretching his legs. "You know, house rent is too expensive these days," he said. "We are tired of paying rent. We said we should come and live with you." Benny sat down quietly, looking at them. She remembered how she cried in the hospital and how she nearly died carrying her babies around in hunger. These were the same parents who refused to help her, who turned their backs when she needed them.
Benny cleared her throat and spoke, her voice calm but firm. "When I was in the hospital, where were you people?" she asked. "When I had no food to eat, no house to sleep in, no money to pay bills, where were you?"
Her mother shifted uncomfortably on the chair. "It was not like that, Benny. You know things were hard for us too," she said. Benny shook her head. "You abandoned me. You left me to die with my children. Now that God has remembered me, you are here to share what you did not work for."
Her father coughed and spoke. "No matter what, we are still your parents. You are supposed to take care of us now."
Benny looked at them for a long moment. "Parents take care of their children first before expecting anything in return," she replied. "You both pushed me away when I needed you most. Now, you want to come and enjoy the blessings you rejected. I suffered alone. I carried these babies alone. I begged for work at a construction site. Where were you when police carried me like a criminal because I couldn't pay hospital bills?"
Her mother began to raise her voice. "You are talking to us anyhow because you have small money now, abi? Don't forget we brought you into this world."
Benny stood up slowly and pointed at the door. "And you also left me alone to die in this world," she said. "Please, leave my house. I don't have a place for people who could not stand with me when I was nothing. You didn't believe in me then, so don't expect to enjoy with me now." Her voice was firm. She was no longer the helpless girl they had once ignored.
Her father stood up angrily. "Is it because people gave you money online that you are now forming madam?" he shouted. Benny folded her arms across her chest. "Yes, people who don't even know me helped me when my own parents abandoned me. That should tell you the kind of parents you are." Her mother started to beg. "Please, Benny, forgive us. We are sorry. We were confused. We didn’t know what to do." Benny shook her head. "Your sorry is too late. I don't hate you, but I will not allow you to enjoy what you rejected."
Her mother started crying and kneeling, but Benny was not moved. She remembered the cold nights at the hospital, the empty days when she couldn't feed herself, and the shame of being dragged by police. These people never called once. They never showed up when she needed a shoulder to lean on. Now, they were begging because the story had changed. She bent down, carried two of her babies in her arms, and looked at them. "I will raise my children differently," she said. "They will know what love is. They will never feel the way I felt."
Benny opened the door wide. "Please go," she said. Her parents hesitated, but when they saw that she meant it, they stood up and dragged their small bag with them. Benny watched as they walked out. She closed the door gently behind them and leaned against it for a moment. There was no sadness in her heart. There was only peace. She knew she had made the right decision. She walked back to her babies, who were now smiling on their play mats. Her future was now in her hands, and she would protect it with everything she had.
Later that evening, Clara visited and saw Benny looking relaxed. "How did it go with your parents?" Clara asked. Benny smiled slightly. "They came to eat where they did not sow. I sent them away." Clara nodded in approval. "Good. This is your second chance at life, Benny. Protect your peace. Surround yourself with people who truly love you and your babies." Benny nodded. She looked around her beautiful apartment and then at her babies. She felt strong. She felt blessed. And most of all, she felt ready to face anything life would bring next.
