The Gen Z Housemaid

Episode 8

Deborah has no idea that her driver has been sacked. She was still in her room getting ready. She applied her makeup carefully.

"I want to look good now that I have a young man who is taking good care of my engine." She said as she dressed up.

She looked bright in her blue skirt suit. She picked her handbag and walked out of the room. She went straight to the boys’ quarters to call Kelvin so he could drive her. But when she knocked on the door, nobody answered. She tried again, still no sound. Finally, she pushed the door gently and entered. The room was empty. The bags were gone. She became worried. She stepped out quickly, wondering what happened.

"Where is Kelvin? Why is he not here?" She asked herself as she walked to the main house.

When she entered the main house, she saw Jane sweeping the corridor.

“Jane, where is Kelvin? I can’t find him in the boys’ quarters." Deborah asked. Jane stopped sweeping and smiled wickedly inside her heart.

“Madam, Kelvin is no longer here. He has been sacked,” she said boldly. Deborah was shocked.

“Sacked? Who sacked him? Why? He just started working yesterday. What happened?” she asked with a firm voice. Before Jane could answer, Chief Okolo came down upstairs. He was looking very serious.

“Yes, my dear, I sacked him. Kelvin is a thief. He stole my gold wrist watch.” Chief said. Deborah was surprised to hear the allegation against Kelvin.

“Your gold wrist watch? No, Chief, Kelvin cannot do that. Are you sure?” she asked carefully. Chief nodded firmly.

“Yes, my darling. I saw it with my own eyes. I searched his bags this morning, and the wrist watch was there. I cannot tolerate a thief in my house. It is better to sack him now before he brings more trouble.”

Deborah looked down in shocked.

“You did the right thing, my husband. I support you,” she said. Then she picked her car key and left the house.

Deborah drove herself out of the compound quietly. She could not believe that Kelvin was truly a thief. Deep inside her, she felt something was not right. She decided not to argue with her husband in front of Jane, but she has her own plan.

"That young man is not a thief." She said to herself.

As she drove along the main road, she suddenly saw Kelvin walking slowly by the roadside. He was dragging his small traveling bag. He looks tired and confused. Deborah quickly stopped the car beside him. She wound down the glass and called softly, “Kelvin, come inside.”

Kelvin looked around before rushing into the car. He sat beside her, breathing heavily.

“Madam, thank you for stopping. I don’t know how to explain what happened. Chief accused me of stealing his wrist watch, but I swear to you, I am innocent. I have never even entered his room before. Someone must have set me up,” Kelvin said with pain in his voice.

Deborah looked at him with pity.

“Kelvin, calm down. I believe you. I know you are innocent. Don’t worry. Everything will be fine.” She said.

"You mean you believe I'm innocent?" Kelvin asked.

“Yes of course. From now, you will not live in the house again. But you are still my driver. Nobody can change that. This evening, I will rent an apartment for you. You will stay there and work for me. My husband and Jane will believe you have gone forever, but I will not abandon you. You are too important to me.” She said.

Kelvin’s face brightened with joy. “Madam, thank you so much. God bless you. I thought my life was finished, but you have given me hope again,” he said with gratitude. Deborah smiled and drove on.

Before going to work, Deborah drove Kelvin straight to a hotel. She booked a comfortable room for him. She ordered food for him and gave him N50,000naira in cash.

“Use this money for your food today. Don’t worry about anything. I will handle the rest. Relax here until I return this evening,” she said. Kelvin bowed his head in appreciation.

“Thank you, madam. I am grateful,” he said. Deborah smiled and left him there. On her way to the office, she started making phone calls.

While at work, Deborah called a real estate agent she trusted. She explained that she needed a good two-bedroom apartment in Ikoyi immediately. The agent wasted no time. By afternoon, he called her back and said, “Madam, I have found one. It is neat, beautiful, and secure.”

Deborah sent him the money instantly. She also called a decorator to quickly furnish the place. Within hours, the apartment was ready. The bed was arranged, and everything looked perfect. Deborah smiled as she imagined Kelvin living there, away from her husband’s suspicious eyes and Jane’s gossip.

After work, Deborah did not drive straight home. Instead, she went back to the hotel where she had lodged Kelvin. She entered his room and found him sitting quietly on the bed.

“Kelvin, let us go. I want to show you something,” she said. Kelvin stood up immediately, carrying his small bag. They entered the car and drove off.

About thirty minutes later, Deborah parked in front of a new building. She stepped out, smiling. “Follow me,” she said. Kelvin followed her into the apartment. He could not believe his eyes. The place was beautiful and well decorated.

Deborah looked at him with a smile and spoke clearly.

“Kelvin, this is your apartment. I paid for it today. From now on, you will live here. I will be visiting you secretly. My husband and Jane will continue thinking that you have been sacked, but only you and I will know the truth. This will be our secret apartment. You will continue driving me as my official driver, but when I need you, I will come here. This is where you will be servicing my engine,” she said with boldness. Kelvin stared at her, speechless but overjoyed.
