The Temptation Episode Three

“I can't believe I slept in your house. Your house might be a one-room apartment, but I enjoyed it. This is my best night ever. I love the way you handled me in the bedroom last night. Your bed might be tiny like slippers, but I enjoyed what we did on that bed. Thank you so much for convincing me to sleep in your house. Doris, I'm beginning to fall in love with you. I think I like you.” Ndu tells Doris around 5:30am when they finished another round of love-making. They did it several times that night.

“I like you too. You are such a good man. I'm so happy you like my house. Are you going to visit me again?” Doris asked.

“Why not? I will be coming here more often. From today henceforth, I will be visiting you anytime I want so that you will give me good food to eat in the bedroom. But remember, my wife must not know that I'm sleeping with you.” Ndu said.

“I will not tell her. But what are you going to tell your wife when you get home this morning? She will definitely ask you to explain why you did not come home last night. What are you going to tell her?" Doris asked Ndu.

“Leave that foolish woman. I will handle her. I will just tell her that I slept in the office. She will believe me.” He responded.

“Okay, I trust you.” Doris responded.

Meanwhile, Afoma was boiling at home. She did not sleep well. She kept thinking that her husband might be in the arms of another woman while she was lonely at home. She was right.

“My husband did not come back home today. This is happening for the first time. He has never slept outside the house since we got married. This is the first time he is spending a night away from his house. What happened? Where did my husband sleep last night? I'm so worried. Doris told me that my husband is not cheating on me, but he did not come home in the night and he did not call me to tell me where he was. This is strange. I have to find out what happened. He left for work in the morning and he did not come back since then. Let me visit Doris and hear from her. She may know what happened.” Afoma told herself that early Tuesday morning.

Afoma stood up from bed, picked up her car keys and started driving to Doris’ house. Afoma left home very early, so she was able to beat the Lagos traffic. As early as 5:30am, she was already driving to Dori's house. She had no idea that her husband slept in Doris’ house and that they made love all night. Now, she was going to the house, not knowing that Ndu was there.

“I just hope Doris will have some answers for me. She works with my husband every day and she will be able to know if he is cheating on me with another woman. If I catch any woman sleeping with my husband, this Lagos will not contain us.” Afoma said as she drove into the compound where Doris apartment is located. She packed her car and walked to Doris’ door and knocked.

“Who is knocking at the door?” Ndu asked Doris in a low voice.

“I don't know. I'm not expecting anyone. But let me go and check.” Doris said. She was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for Ndu when Afoma knocked. She washed her hands and rushed to the door. When she opened the door, she was shocked to see Afoma. Doris wanted the ground to open up and swallow her.

“Madam Afoma, I wasn't expecting you. What brings you to my house this early morning? Is everything alright?” Doris asked. She was afraid. She wanted to run back inside to tell Ndu to hide but she knew it was a bad idea. If she runs inside, Afoma will start suspecting her. She had no option but to stay calm even though her heart was not at rest.

“Please, can I come in? I want to talk to you briefly. There is something disturbing my heart. I did not sleep well last night. I need to talk to someone before I will run mad.” Afoma tells Doris. Doris did not want to let her into the house. It is a one-room apartment and once Afoma comes in, she will see Ndu. Doris quickly thought of what to say.

“Can't we talk outside?” Doris asked.

“Please, let me come in and sit down. I need to take some rest. My heart is breaking up into pieces.” She said. At that point, Afoma was already pushing the door to come in. She was crying too, and this made Doris uncomfortable.

“If I allow this woman into my house, there will be trouble. Her husband is in my room. She will see her husband and trouble will start. What am I going to tell her now? What is she looking for in my house this early morning? This woman is a witch. How did she know that her husband slept in my house?” Doris tells herself as she keeps thinking of how to deal with the situation at hand.

“The truth is that my husband did not sleep at home last night. I wanted to talk to you about him. I wanted to know if he came to work yesterday at all. It is a strange behaviour that he did not return. My husband has never slept outside before and this is getting me worried. You told me he is not cheating and that he promised not to cheat, why is he now sleeping outside? My mind is telling me that he slept with another woman last night. I want to find out. Please, I need your help to investigate. I will run mad if my husband sleeps with another woman.” Afoma said. She paused and then continued to talk while Doris listened in silence.

“You see now that what I want to discuss with you is serious. Please, let me come in and sit down. I will not waste your time. We will just talk briefly and go. I know you want to prepare for work. I just want to give you another contract so that you will investigate and know where my husband slept last night. Please, let me come into the house, I'm getting tired of standing. I need to sit in your room so that I will explain everything to you.” Afoma said. She was weeping as she was talking and pleading with Doris to allow her into the room.
