Long Distance Relationship

Episode 5

Jemima and Femi slept peacefully that night after making love. For the first time in years, she felt like a real fiancée again. Femi held her tightly all through the night. When they woke up the next morning, the air was filled with joy. Femi started making plans for their wedding immediately. He visited his parents, and they were all excited to see that he was finally home. Jemima’s family too was happy. The bride price and other traditional items were discussed. The wedding date was picked, and preparations began in full gear. Everything seemed to be moving smoothly for them.

But beneath all the excitement, Jemima’s heart was still troubled. She knew there was something she was hiding and that is the pregnancy. Every time she smiled at Femi, she felt guilt growing inside her. Still, she forced herself to look happy. Femi was busy buying clothes, fixing the venue, and sending money to both families. Jemima joined in the planning with a cheerful face. She told herself that once they were married, everything would be fine.

“I will hide the truth forever. No one will ever know,” she said quietly one evening while arranging her things. But she was wrong.

Bruno was restless. He had not heard from Jemima since that night Femi returned. She had stopped answering his calls. Whenever he texted her, she would read the messages but never reply. He felt hurt and abandoned. He knew she was busy preparing for the wedding, but he couldn’t bear it.

“How can she just forget me like that?” he asked himself angrily. He thought about all the times they had spent together and all the moments they shared in secret. He loved Jemima deeply. The thought of her marrying his brother made him feel sick. He couldn’t take it anymore.

One afternoon, Bruno decided to visit Jemima’s house. He didn’t call her first. He wanted to see her face to face and ask her why she was treating him like a stranger. Jemima was shocked when she opened the door and saw him standing there.

“Bruno! Why didn’t you call me before coming? What if Femi sees you with me? What are you doing here?” she asked in a whisper, looking around nervously.

“I came to see you. You’ve been ignoring me for weeks.” Bruno said with a sad face.

“You shouldn’t be here. Femi comes here all the time now. If he sees you, there will be trouble.” She said.

“I don’t care. I need answers. Why are you ignoring me?” Bruno asked.

Jemima invited him inside reluctantly.

“Talk quickly. I don’t have much time.” She said.

Bruno looked straight into her eyes. “Why are you doing this to me? You stopped calling, you stopped replying to my messages. Is this how you want to end everything between us?” Bruno asked. Jemima looked away.

“Bruno, please understand. I’m about to marry your brother. What we had is over. It was a mistake. We should never have dated in the first place.” She said. Bruno frowned deeply.

“Over? After everything we shared? After all the nights we spent together? You think you can just walk away like nothing happened?” He asked.

“Please don’t start this again, Bruno.” Jemima said.

“You can’t marry Femi. You belong to me,” he said. Jemima was shocked.

“What did you just say?” Jemima asked in shock. Bruno stepped closer.

“You heard me. You can’t marry him. I love you, Jemima. You are mine.” He said.

Jemima shook her head. “Bruno, stop saying that. What we did was a mistake. Femi is my fiancé, and I’m going to marry him. Please, don’t ruin everything.” She said.

Bruno laughed bitterly. “A mistake? That’s what I am to you now?” He asked. Jemima’s eyes were filled with tears.

“Please, Bruno. Let’s end this quietly before anyone gets hurt.” She said. But Bruno’s face was hard. He wasn’t listening.

“I will not let you marry Femi,” Bruno said firmly. Jemima stepped back, frightened by the anger in his eyes.

“You can’t stop me. It’s too late. The families are involved. The wedding plans are already in motion.” She said.

“Then you must cancel it. Cancel the wedding. Tell them the truth. Tell them that you and I have been in love for two years.” Bruno said. Jemima’s face turned into shock.

“Are you out of your mind? Do you know what that will cause?” She asked. Bruno nodded slowly.

“Yes, but I don’t care. I would rather destroy everything than lose you.” Bruno said.

Jemima sat down and started crying. “Bruno, please don’t do this. I’m begging you. Think about your brother. Think about your family. If you say anything, you will destroy your relationship with Femi forever.” She said. Bruno turned away.

“I don’t care anymore. Femi took everything from me. He took you from me.” Jemima stood up and wiped her tears.

“No, Bruno. You were the one who crossed the line. You shouldn’t have touched me in the first place.”

“Don’t act as if you are innocent, Jemima. You wanted it too. You enjoyed every moment. Don’t pretend you didn’t.” He said.

Jemima’s heart was troubled. She didn’t know what to say. “Please, Bruno. I’m pregnant,” she almost said, but quickly stopped herself. She knew telling him would make everything worse. She decided against telling him about the pregnancy. She will continue hiding it. Instead, she said quietly, “Let’s forget everything that happened between us. Let’s move on with our lives. You’ll find someone else. I will marry Femi and travel with him.”

Bruno looked at her with disbelief. “So that’s it? You use me and dump me like trash?” he asked angrily.

“No, Bruno. It’s not like that,” Jemima replied weakly. But Bruno stepped closer, his eyes burning with pain and anger.

He looked her in the eyes and spoke harshly.

“If you try to leave me, I will ruin everything. I will expose you. When Femi was in America, I was the one keeping you company. You cannot leave me after making me fall in love with you. Be warned.” He said. Jemima was afraid. She knew he meant every word. Bruno turned and walked out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

Jemima fell on her knees and covered her face. Tears flowed freely from her eyes. “God, what have I done? Bruno will destroy everything if I’m not careful.” She said.
