The Brave Hunter - Episode 14
The loud noise from the village square could be heard in all parts of the village. Lucky the dog was in the princess's chamber. The dog watched her cry uncontrollably. The princess was walking around the room in helplessness.
"What am I going to do now? My father doesn't want to listen to me. Uche is the man I love." The princess said.
The dog's sharp eyes saw when Uche was dragged out of the palace by the warriors. The dog understood that danger has returned for his friend, Uche. Without waiting for a command, Lucky ran out of the room. The dog ran out through the palace gates, and headed straight toward the village. His legs kicked up dust, his ears pulled back like those of a rabbit. The dog knew time was running out, so it ran very fast.
Soon, Lucky arrived at the farmer's house. The farmer was seated outside, listening to the loud voices from the village square. He frowned, sensing something bad was happening. When he saw Lucky running towards him, barking frantically, he knew immediately that there was danger.
"Oh no. The dog is here. Uche is in trouble again." Without wasting another moment, the farmer ran toward the square with the dog following him. His heart was pounding with fear and anger. He prayed he wasn't too late.
"I hope they have not killed him yet. I hope I will meet Uche alive at the village square." The farmer said.
When they reached the village square, the farmer saw what was about to happen to Uche. Uche was tied to a tree and his head lowered in defeat. Several warriors stood around, sharpening their spears and checking their swords. The crowd shouted in readiness to watch.
"This is bad. This mand is innocent. I cannot let him die for a crime he didn't commit." The him die for a crime he didn't commit. The farmer said.
The farmer's eyes were filled with tears. Turning quickly, he motioned for Lucky to follow and they ran back toward the palace.
"I will go and talk to the king myself.
The farmer said.
They slipped into the palace through the small back gate that few used. The farmer's sandals slapped against the stone floor as he hurried to the princess's chambers. He pushed the door open and found her sitting on the bed, her face buried in her palms. She was crying.
"Princess!" The farmer shouted. She looked up with confusion.
"Farmer... what are you doing here?" she asked, wiping her tears quickly.
"What am I doing here? I should be asking why you're here crying instead of out there saving Uche's life!" The farmer said. The princess looked away.
"I tried talking to my father but he refused to listen. He has made up his mind to kill Uche. She said.
The farmer stepped closer to her.
"Maybe that's because you haven't told him the full truth!" He said. She looked at him in confusion.
"What truth again? told him I'm in love with Uche and I'm even pregnant for him. What other truth should I tell my father?" The princess asked.
"That Uche saved you from kidnappersThat he risked his life for you! You've been silent when you should have spoken loudly." The farmer said.
"I thought I told him. I mentioned it to my father once," she saidThe farmer shook his head in frustration.
Once is not enough, princess! Do you think kings make decisions from whispers? You must stand in front of him and say it clearly-again and again-until he understands. Right now, Uche is about to die. They are just waiting for the king to arrive at the square. You still have time to stop his deathYou have to act immediately if you truly love him." The farmer said.
"I was just afraid. I was confused. Everything happened so fast." She said.
"Fear will kill Uche faster than any spear, princess. If you truly love him, this is your moment to prove it. Sitting here will save no one." The farmer said. She looked down, tears rolling down her eyes again.
"You're right. I've been a coward.She said.
The farmer stepped back and pointed toward the door.
"Then stop being one. Get up. Go to your father right now. Tell him the truth, and don't leave until he listens. This is no longer about pride or tradition-this is about a man's life." The farmer said.
The princess nodded slowly, wiping her tears.
"Yes. I will tell him everything." Lucky wagged his tail as if he understood the decision.
"Good. And I am going with you. You might need someone to speak alongside you. Kings listen better when more than one voice speaks the truth.Said the farmer. The princess rose to her feet, adjusting her dress and straightening her crown. Her face now carried determination instead of fear. Together, they headed toward the king's chambers, the farmer at her side, Lucky running just behind them. Each step they took was heavy with urgency, the sound of the crowd outside still roaring in the background.
"This princess is very funny. She is here crying when the father of her unborn baby is about to die. Let me talk to the king myself." The farmer said to himself.
