The Brave Hunter - Episode 8
The princess planned to go and see Uche in the gaurd room but she didn't want to go with her guards. She woke up very early that morning, dressed simply, and wore a plain scarf to cover her face. She did not want anyone in the palace to recognize her as she sneaked out. She met the farmer at the back gate as they had planned the night before. Lucky the dog wagged its tail excitedly when it saw the princess. The princess gently patted the dog and nodded for them to move.
"Let's go before anyone will see us. I want this to be a secret." The princess said.
Together, they walked through a narrow bush path, careful not to draw any attention. It was still early and most villagers had not come out. The guard room is located somewhere in the village. Those sentenced to death are kept there waiting their death day. After walking for about thirty minutes, the farmer pointed at a wooden structure in the middle of an open space.
"That is where your saviour has been kept like a common thief." The farmer said. The princess was shocked. She could not believe that someone who risked his life to save her has been treated in such a wicked way. She rushed towards the wooden cell. Lucky ran ahead of her and barked. When the princess got there, she looked inside through the gaps in the wood. She shouted when she saw Uche sitting weakly inside.
"I know this man. I saw his face that day, just before I lost consciousness. I remember how he bent and checked if I was still breathing. But everything happened so fast. When I woke up, I was already in the palace. Nobody told me the truth. They only said I was found and rescued by the guards and that one of the kidnappers was arrested for questioning." The princess said. She was crying.
"It was not the palace guards who rescued you. It was this man and his dog. He has told me the story and I believe him. This man used some local charm to make the kidnappers to sleep. He carried you to safety. The dog led him to where they kept you. If not for Uche, you might still be in that forest or dead. Now he is suffering for what he didn't do." The farmer said. The princess shook her head and looked inside the wooden cell again. She felt very bad and ashamed.
"How can people be so heartless? Why would they sentence an innocent man to death? Why did nobody care to ask me what happened? Why didn't they tell me someone had been arrested? This is not right at all. He should not be here. He should not be suffering like this after everything he did for me. We need to help him right now before it becomes too late." The princess said with tears in her eyes.
Without wasting time, the princess turned to the farmer and gave him clear instructions.
"Please, go to your house and get something strong. A cutlass or an axe. We must break this thing and bring him out."
The farmer ran off immediately. Lucky stayed behind with the princess, sitting beside her and watching as she looked sadly into the cell. In a short while, the farmer returned with a sharp cutlass. Carefully, he began to cut through the wooden stakes. He worked gently to avoid hurting Uche who was too weak to even talk.
After some minutes, one side of the wooden cell broke open. The farmer reached in and helped Uche out. The princess looked at Uche closely. His eyes were tired and his legs could hardly move. He has lost weight and looked like someone who has not eaten for many days.
With the farmer supporting him, they helped him to walk slowly. The princess told the farmer to be careful and avoid using the main road. She led the way through a narrow path that led directly to the palace's back gate.
"I don't want anyone to see us. Let us follow shortcut." She said.
When they reached the back of the palace, the princess used her own key to open the small door that led into her chambers. They helped Uche inside and sat him down on a soft chair.
"Please, do not tell anybody what has happened today. Nobody must know that I brought Uche into the palace. If anybody finds out, I might be in serious trouble. Let me take care of him until he is strong again. I will make sure he is safe." The princess said. The farmer agreed and promised to keep his mouth shut. The farmer left.

"You are safe now. I didn't know you were the one who helped me. I'm so sorry for everything you've passed through. But from today, I will make sure you get the care you deserve. You are no longer a prisoner. You are under my protection." The princess tells Uche. She took him to her private bathroom, gave him water to bathe, and even helped him with the soap. Then she brought out royal clothes for him to wear.
After he had his bath, the princess brought food from the royal kitchen and fed Uche herself. She sat with him while he ate slowly. Lucky the dog lay beside the chair and watched them. The princess fed the dog too. When Uche was done eating, the princess took him to her bedroom and told him to lie down and rest. She covered him with a soft blanket.
"Don't worry about anything. Just sleep. You are safe now. You don't have to fear anymore. Nobody will hurt you again." The princess said. Lucky jumped on the bed and lay close to Uche.
Uche closed his eyes for the first time in many days and felt peace. The bed was soft. The room was quiet. He could still feel the warmth of the princess's kindness. He didn't have the strength to talk, but deep inside his heart, he was grateful. As he drifted into sleep, he knew that his life has been saved by the same person he once saved. The dog rested its head on the bed. The princess sat quietly by the window, thinking of what she would do next.
