The Brave Hunter - Episode Seven
The beautiful princess was in her chambers. She was sitting close to the window and relaxing when a palace guard knocked on her door.
Your Highness. There is a farmer at the gate who insists he must see you. He says it is urgent." The guard said. The princess looked up with curiosity.
"A farmer? What does he want?" The princess asked. The guard shook his head.
"He didn't say exactly why she wants to see you. He only begged us to let him speak with you directly. He has a dog with him too. The dog has refused leave his side." The guard said. The princess paused thoughtfully. After a moment of silence, the princess stood up.
"Very well. You can bring him to me. I'll speak with him here." She said.
A few minutes later, the farmer entered the princess's chambers, looking tired and dusty from travel. Lucky, the dog, followed closely behind him. The dog suddenly stopped and started looking at the princess. The dog started barking and wagging its tail excitedly.
"I remember this dog. I saw him that day in the forest, just before I lost consciousness. This was the dog that helped me." The princess said happily. She stood up and touched the dog.
"Yes, your highness, you are right. This dog, Lucky, was the one who led the hunter to where the kidnappers tied you up. He followed your scent through the forest and found you. And that hunter, his name is Uche. He is the one who rescued you, carried you through the bush, and took you to safety. The dog was with him. The dog saw everything. But now, he has been accused of kidnapping you, and he has been sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit. I have to come to ask you, were you the one who told your father that Uche kidnapped you? Why are you keeping quiet all these while? Do you want him to die? Why are you so wicked?" The farmer asked. The princess frowned in shock.
"What are you saying? You mean the man who rescued me, who risked his life to save me, is now in prison and waiting to be killed?" The princess asked.
"That's exactly what I'm saying, Your Highness. Your father, the king, believes Uche kidnapped you. He doesn't know the truth. Uche was only trying to help. He even charmed the kidnappers with powder to let you go. He never hurt you. And now, because of this misunderstanding, an innocent man is going to die. I couldn't stay quiet anymore. I met with Uche in his cell and he told me the story. I said I must come and see you personally to know what is going on." The farmer said. The princess sat down slowly, clearly disturbed by the farmer's words.
"But how is this possible? I don't remember everything from that day. I was tied up and afraid. I remember hearing voices, and I saw a man's face, but I didn't know who he was. I passed out before I could understand what was going on. I didn't even know someone had been arrested for the incident. Nobody told me anything. I've been in this palace, thinking the kidnappers were caught. I didn't know the king sentenced someone who is innocent. I feel terrible." The princess said.
"That's why I came here, Your Highness. I didn't know what else to do. I even went to Uche's village to inform his people but they arrested me instead. They sentenced me to death. They accused me of killing Uche. I escaped from the wooden prison they kept me in. I ran away. This dog helped me escape. I walked all the way to the next village just to tell you the truth. Uche doesn't deserve to die. If you don't speak up for him, nobody else will. You are the only person who can change this situation." The farmer said.
The princess was silent for a while. She looked at the dog again, and her heart softened.
"So, this dog led you all the way to Uche's village? You mean the dog helped you escape from Uche's village?" The princess asked.
"Yes, Your Highness. Lucky never gave up. Не stayed with me. When I was locked up and hungry, he bit the wooden stake until it broke. That's how I escaped. He didn't forget Uche. He knew something was wrong. I believe this dog understands everything." The farmer said.
"The dog is very brave. Just like his master. Uche must be brave too."
"Uche is very brave. But more than that, he is kind. He didn't have to help you that day, but he did. He could have walked away. But he risked his life to save you. He didn't do it for reward or fame. He did it because it was the right thing to do. Please, Your Highness, don't let an innocent man die because of silence. If you speak, everyone will listen. You can save his life. I beg you." The farmer said. The princess knew the farmer was telling the truth.
"Thank you for coming to me. I believe you. Even though my memory is not clear, I know this dog. I believe his actions. And I believe what you're saying about Uche. If he truly saved my life, then it is wrong for him to die like a criminal. I will not let this happen. I need to see this man for myself. I want to look at his face and remember clearly. If I see him and know he's the one, I will not keep quiet. The princess said.
"Thank you, Your Highness. You don't know what this means to me. I was scared you wouldn't believe me. Uche has been through a lot. He's in chains, waiting for death. Just seeing you might give him hope again. Please, don't delay." The farmer said.
There and then, the princess called the guards to take her to the place where Uche is detained.
