Unexpected Wealth Episode 9
The lab technician could not sleep well after what he heard from a nurse. She had told him about Victoria's pain. She said Victoria cried silently in the waiting room after the DNA result was given to Chief. The nurse had sat near her and overheard everything. Victoria had been talking to herself, saying how she raised Temi alone, how she never told Chief about the boy until she was sure, and how Temi had no one else except her. The technician sat quietly and listened. After the nurse left, he began to think deeply about what he had done.
He remembered how Victoria had greeted him politely when she arrived that day. She didn't look like a woman who was trying to deceive anybody. She had spoken with honesty and fear, not with arrogance. Temi too had looked calm and respectful. The technician began to regret his action. He had allowed money to control his decision, and now an innocent boy and his mother would suffer. He kept hearing Victoria's voice in his head, the part where she said she didn't want to lie to Chief. He knew he had to do something.
The day before the test, when Titi came to meet him and handed him the money, something had told him to be careful. He didn't trust her fully, so he had placed his phone in his lab coat pocket and set it to record video. He recorded everything she said, including when she mentioned the amount and told him exactly what to write on the test result. After she left, he watched the video again and saved it in his email. He had no plan to use it, but now it felt like the only way to make things right.
He carried the money home but didn't spend it. It was still inside his drawer, untouched. That morning, he took the nylon bag, the video on a flash drive, and walked to Chief Eze's house. He didn't call or inform anyone. He just felt it was time to confess. When he got to the gate, the security man asked him who he was. He said he worked at the hospital. The guard led him inside. Chief Eze was sitting outside, under a shade, reading a newspaper. He looked up when he saw the technician and asked, "How may I help you?"
The young man greeted Chief politely and said, "Sir, I need to speak with you. It's something important. Please, can we talk privately?" Chief folded the newspaper and told the guard to give them space.
"I hope there's no problem," Chief said. The technician sat down slowly. "Sir, I came to confess something," he said. "But I want you to promise me you won't report me to the police. I know what I did was wrong, and I'm ready to face any punishment from you. But I beg you, don't involve the law." Chief looked at him and nodded slowly.
"I changed the DNA result," the technician said. "The boy is your son. But I made the test show that he's not. I did it because your wife, Titi, gave me a bribe. She gave me N2 million to do it." Chief didn't say anything. He just stared at him. "I felt bad after I saw how that woman cried and talked about the boy," he continued. "A nurse told me her story, and since then, I've not had peace. I brought back the money. I didn't touch it." He placed the nylon bag on the table in front of Chief.
Chief looked at the bag, then looked at the technician again. "You're sure of what you're saying?" he asked. The technician nodded. "Yes, sir. And to prove it, I have this." He brought out the flash drive from his pocket and handed it over. "I recorded her that day.
Everything she said and did is inside. I didn't plan to use it before, but now I think it's the only thing that can prove the truth." Chief took the flash drive quietly. "Thank you for coming forward," he said. "I don't even know what to say. You may go now."
The technician stood up slowly. "I'm sorry, sir. I wish I could take back what I did. I hope you find a way to correct it." Chief nodded. "I will handle it from here. You've done your part." The technician turned and walked away. As he left the compound, Chief remained seated, staring at the flash drive. Everything was beginning to make sense. The doubts he had about the second result, Victoria's reaction, even Temi's behaviour-everything pointed to one truth. Titi had lied, and he had fallen for it. But now he had the truth in his hands.
Chief called his driver and told him to get someone who could play the video on the flash drive. He wanted to see everything with his own eyes. He also picked up his phone and dialled a number. "Victoria," he said when she answered. "Please, I need to see you and Temi. There's something important I just discovered." Victoria was surprised. "Okay, sir," she said quietly. "We will come." After the call, Chief sat back and closed his eyes. He had almost thrown away his own son because of a lie. But now, things were going to change. The truth was finally out.
