My Mother Has Gone Mad Episode Three

The doctors at the hospital did several tests on my mother. They checked her eyes, her heartbeat, and asked her many questions. After everything, they said something surprising. "She is not mad," one of the doctors said. "She only suffered a mental breakdown." I didn't really understand what that meant at first, but the doctor explained. He said it happens to people who are going through too much pain and stress in life. It breaks the mind. My mother had held on for too long, and one day, her mind just broke. That was what happened in the market.

As the doctor kept talking, I looked at Mama. She was sitting quietly on the hospital bed. She looked calm but tired. The doctor turned to the man who brought us and said, "She doesn't need a psychiatric hospital. She just needs peace, love, and rest. Give her time, and she will be fine." When I heard that, I felt some peace in my heart. Deep down, I knew they were telling the truth. My mother had gone through so much. She went through rejection, hunger, sadness, and struggle. She had always tried to hide it from me. But I saw it in her eyes.

The kind man listened to everything the doctor said and nodded. The doctors gave some medicine to help her sleep and rest, but they repeated the same thing: what she needed the most was care and support. "Take her home. Keep her safe. Make her happy," the doctor said. The man thanked them and promised to do as they advised. We left the hospital that afternoon. I sat in the back of the jeep again, holding Mama's hand. She was still quiet, but she didn't pull her hand away. That small thing gave me so much hope.

We returned to the man's house. The moment we entered, his servants brought food. He told one of them, "Let her eat first, then let her rest." Mama was fed and bathed again. The man even bought new clothes for both of us. Every day, he checked on her. He made sure we were comfortable. He gave me books, toys, and snacks. At night, I slept like a baby. I had never seen that kind of care before. This man didn't just save us he gave us something we had never truly known: love. He treated us like family.

For one full month, he cared for us. Mama started to smile again. She was talking small-small and even laughed sometimes. She helped in the kitchen once in a while. I could see her returning to herself. The man made sure she took her medicine and ate good food. He also talked to her like a friend. He didn't rush her to heal. He gave her time. Me, I was happy every single day. I no longer felt like a girl who slept on the ground at a dump site. I felt like a child again-safe, clean, and loved.

One morning, the man sat with Mama and asked her, "Where are your people from?" Mama said our village was far. The man said, "You'll go back soon, but not the same way you left." That week, he took us to the village. The Journey was long, but when we arrived, something beautiful happened. Right there, beside the river road, the man had started building a house. Not a very big house, but it was fine, neat, and perfect for Mama and me. When I saw it, my mouth opened.

The house was painted cream. It had two rooms, a parlour, and a kitchen at the back. Mama was speechless. She kept looking at the house like she was dreaming. The man turned to her and said, "This is yours. I built it for you and your daughter. You don't have to suffer again." Mama couldn't talk. She just cried. Tears rolled down her cheeks, but it wasn't tears of pain this time. It was tears of joy. I held her hand tightly, and I cried too. We were happy. Truly happy.

Before he left, the man gave Mama N1 million. He told her, "Start any small business you want. I will support you." He also bought some foodstuff and other things for the house. When we finally stood at the door to wave him goodbye, Mama said, "You came into our lives like an angel. May God bless you forever." The man smiled, hugged both of us, and entered his jeep. As he drove off, I knew life would never be the same again. Not because we were now rich, but because someone finally saw us, helped us, and gave us another chance.

That was how my mother and I were rescued from poverty and pain. That was how love and kindness brought us out of the dump site and into a home of peace. I will never forget what that man did for us. Till today, I still remember his smile. I still remember how he made me feel safe when I was afraid. Sometimes, all someone needs is for just one person to care. That was what saved my mother. That was what saved me.

THE END.
