My Mother Has Gone Mad Episode Two
Night had fully come. I was still sitting beside my mother at the dirty dump site. She was no longer shouting or moving. She just sat there, looking at nothing. I was tired, hungry, and cold. Mosquitoes were biting me, and my legs were aching. But I refused to leave her. That was my mother. I kept holding her hand, hoping something would change. I didn't know what else to do. Then suddenly, a bright light from a car shone on us. I turned and saw a big black jeep. It had stopped not far from where we were sitting.
A tall man came down from the jeep. He looked neat and rich. He stood for a while and looked at us. I became scared. I didn't know if he was good or bad. My heart started beating 'kakpim 'kakpim 'kakpim. Then the man spoke. "Young girl, come here," he said. His voice was calm and gentle. I didn't move at first. I was afraid. But when he spoke again, his voice still soft, I stood up and walked slowly to him.
"What are you doing here with your mother at this time of the night?" he asked me.
That was when I started crying. I told him everything. How my mother removed her clothes in the market and started running like someone who had gone mad. How I followed her through the road and into this dirty place. I told him I had been with her since afternoon. "She is not well," I said with tears in my eyes. The man looked at me with pity.
"Will you come with me to my house?" He asked.
"She won't follow me. She has refused to leave this place. I don't know what to do." I told the man.
The man walked past me and went straight to my mother. I followed behind, still afraid. My mother didn't move when he got close. She didn't even look at him. He knelt beside her and spoke gently.
"Madam, you can't sleep here. Let me help you and your daughter." The man said. At first, my mother shouted at him.
"Leave me alone!" My mother said. But the man didn't leave. He kept talking to her softly.
He touched her shoulder slowly. After a while, something surprising happened. My mother stood up. She didn't speak. She just followed him to the car.
We entered the jeep. My mother sat beside the door and rested her head. She was quiet. I sat close to her. I kept looking at her to make sure she didn't jump out. The man drove us to his house. When we got there, I was shocked. The compound was big and beautiful. There were lights everywhere. A woman came out to open the gate. She was surprised to see us. The man told her to help us.
"Help them. Give them water to bathe and some food." The man tells his servant. The woman helped my mother inside. She also gave me a towel and wrapper to use.
I entered the bathroom and took my bath. The water was warm. It felt good after everything I had gone through. When I came out, food was waiting for me. White rice and red stew with meat. I didn't waste time. I ate everything. The food was so sweet. I have never eaten something as good as that before. The man sat in the sitting room and watched me. After eating, I was given a soft bed. I lay down and slept off. It was the first time I was sleeping in a clean place. I was happy we were no longer at the dump site. I felt safe. Surprisingly, my mother didn't make noise in the rich man's house. I began to wonder if it was poverty that made her to run màd.
The next morning, I woke up and smelled fried eggs. A woman told me that the man was taking my mother to the hospital. I quickly got up and followed them. At the hospital, nurses checked my mother. The doctor gave her an injection to calm her down. My mother didn't talk or fight. She just rested. I sat beside her and held her hand. She didn't push me away. That gave me hope. The man stood by the door and watched us. He looked like someone who cared. He is a kind person. I still didn't know his name. But I knew he was sent by God.
"What's your name?" He asked me.
"Oge," I said.
"And your mother?" He asked.
"Mama Oge," I replied. He nodded and smiled gently.
"You're a strong girl, Oge. You didn't run away from your mother. That's a good thing." The man said. I looked at him and nodded too. I didn't know what to say. I was just happy someone finally helped us. This man who didn't know us stopped his car, picked us from the dump, gave us food, clean clothes, and now brought us to the hospital. To me, he was more than just a man. He was an angel.
I didn't know what would happen next. I didn't know if my mother would get better or if we would return to our house. But one thing I knew was that God sent this man to help us. He came at the right time. Just when I thought nobody would help, he showed up. And that night, he didn't only save my mother. He saved me too.
