The Dying Billionaire Episode 2
Dike could not understand what he just heard. He had always believed his parents loved each other. Hearing his father talk about a DNA test shook him deeply. As they left the hospital that day, he kept quiet in the car, but as soon as they reached home, he followed his mother to her room. He closed the door behind him and asked the question that had been burning in his chest. "Mummy, did you ever cheat on daddy?" Ebube looked at him and replied without thinking twice. "No, Dike. I swear to you, I never cheated on your father."
Dike watched her closely. He didn't want to doubt his mother, but something didn't feel right. "Then why is daddy saying this? He looked serious, mummy. He said he had reasons to suspect you," Dike said. Ebube walked to the window and looked outside without saying a word. Dike kept staring at her. "Mummy, talk to me. I need to know. I'm not a child." Ebube turned to him and said, "Your father is sick and confused. Don't let his sickness make you start asking questions that don't have answers. You're my son. And you are his son."
The next day, they all returned to the hospital. Chief Omenka had already signed the documents for the test. He didn't want any delay. He knew he didn't have much time left. The hospital had made all the arrangements. The lab technician came to the ward and took blood samples from both Chief Omenka and Dike. The atmosphere in the room was quiet. Even the nurses didn't talk much. The test would be ready before the end of the day. Dike sat quietly in the waiting room with his mother, not saying a word.
When Ebube stepped out to use the toilet, she followed the technician into a corner and whispered to him. She begged him to talk to her before releasing the results. The technician was confused but followed her into an empty office. "Please," Ebube said, "I need your help. If the result shows that my husband is not the father of my son, he will die faster. Please don't tell the truth. I will pay you." The man was shocked. He looked at her for some seconds, then said, "You want me to change the DNA result?"
"Yes," Ebube answered. "I'm ready to pay you. I don't want this to destroy my family." The
technician looked around to make sure nobody was listening. "This is serious," he said. "If anybody finds out, I will lose my job and go to prison. This kind of lie is not small. It is dangerous." Ebube looked desperate. "I know. But I will give you five million naira. Nobody will know. Just change the result and say that my husband is the father." The technician thought about it for a while, then agreed. "Send the money. Once I get it, I will fix the result."
Before evening, the result was ready. Ebube had already transferred the money to the technician's account. The technician printed a new result stating that Chief Omenka was Dike's father. He walked confidently into the ward and handed the file to the doctor. The doctor opened the envelope in front of everyone and read out the result. "Chief, the DNA result shows that Dike is your biological son. There is no mistake. The result is clear." Chief Omenka nodded slowly. He looked at Dike and gave a weak smile. Dike smiled back. Ebube also smiled but didn't say anything.
The atmosphere in the room became relaxed. Chief Omenka was satisfied. "Thank you," he said. "I just wanted to be sure before I leave this world. I'm happy now." He called for a nurse and asked her to bring a bottle of malt and some biscuits. He gave it to Dike and said, "Take. You're now a confirmed billionaire. Everything I worked for will be yours." Dike laughed and hugged his father gently. Ebube came closer and touched her husband's hand.. "Thank you for trusting me," she said softly. The doctor gave a small nod and started leaving the room.
Just as the doctor got to the door, Chief Omenka called out to him. "Doctor, please come back. There's something else I want to do." Everyone turned to look at him. "I want you to help me arrange another DNA test. But this time, let it be in another lab outside this hospital. I want to double-check. I just want peace of mind." As he spoke, Ebube shifted on her seat. "Why again?" she asked, trying to keep her voice calm. "We've already done one. Let it end here." But the Chief shook his head. "I want to be double sure."
The doctor nodded. "That's not a problem, sir. I will call another lab immediately. I will also give you their number so you can talk to them. They can come tomorrow morning to take samples." Ebube did not say anything again. Her mind was already unsettled. She was afraid that the new lab might not take bribe. And even if they did, it would be risky to try the same trick twice. She walked to the window and stood quietly, pretending to be observing the hospital compound. Dike noticed the change in her mood. "Mummy, are you okay?" he asked. She turned to him and said, "I'm fine. Just tired of all these tests."
That night, Ebube could not sleep. She sat in the sitting room of their mansion, staring at nothing. Her phone was in her hand. She thought about calling the technician again, but she knew there was nothing he could do. The second test would not pass through him. It would be handled by another lab entirely. She had already paid five million to cover up the first one. If the second test comes out different, everything will scatter. She began to think of other options. Maybe she could run away with Dike before the second result comes out.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Chief Omenka was still awake. He was alone in the room, staring at the ceiling. He had doubts in his heart, even though the result had said Dike was his son. Something inside him still felt wrong. He wanted peace before he died. He wanted to look into his son's eyes and know the truth. That
was why he asked for a second test. Not because he wanted trouble, but because he didn't want to die with questions in his heart. He prayed silently that the next result would match the first one.
