The House Rent Saga Episode 7
Ene woke up early that morning, her mind occupied with thoughts of her recent discovery. She had confirmed her pregnancy just a few days ago and had been contemplating how to handle the situation. She knew she had to inform Okopi, their landlord, about the development. After preparing breakfast for Agada and ensuring he left for work in good spirits, she decided it was time to visit Okoрі.
"Even if I tell him, I will still pin the pregnancy on my husband. That is the most sensible thing to do. I believe he will never find out that I have been having affair with the landlord. How can he ever find out? After all, I was doing it to help the family. If I didn't do it, how would we have survived? Because of what I did, we have been able to get many things from the landlord. We got our house rent waived, we got a car from him. I also got a shop from him. Many benefits and financial gains have come our way since I started visiting his room. Even with this pregnancy, I will not stop visiting him. I want my husband to continue to get favours from Okopi. It is good that he will never find out. I will keep everything as a secret. I will also visit the landlord today because I'm still enjoying our relationship even with the pregnancy. I have used the relationship to rescue myself and my husband from extreme poverty. I will continue. Why would I stop doing what is helping me and my family? No woman in her right senses will stop doing what will help her family. I will use my body to help my husband. It is the wisest thing to do." Ene said to herself that morning.
By noon, Ene approached the main house and knocked gently on the landlord's door. Okopi opened it, surprised but pleased to see her. "Ene, what brings you here at this time?" he asked, stepping aside to let her in.
She entered and sat on the edge of the sofa, her hands clasped together. "I have something important to tell you," she began, avoiding his gaze.
Okopi sat opposite her, sensing the seriousness in her tone. "I'm listening."
Taking a deep breath, she said, "I'm pregnant." A brief silence filled the room as Okopi absorbed the news. He leaned back, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "And you believe I'm responsible?"
Ene nodded slowly. "Yes. Given the timing, it has to be you."
Okopi studied her for a moment before speaking. "So, what do you plan to do?"
She looked up, determination in her eyes. "I intend to let Agada believe the child is his. I can't break his heart or destroy our marriage." He nodded in agreement. "I understand. If that's your decision, I won't stand in your way. We'll keep this between us."
Relief washed over Ene. "Thank you for understanding."
Later that evening, Agada returned home, exhausted but content from a day's work. After freshening up, he settled down for dinner with Ene. As they ate, there was a knock on the door.
"Who could that be?" Agada wondered aloud, getting up to answer.
Opening the door, he was surprised to find Okopi standing there, a broad smile on his face.
"Good evening, Agada," Okopi greeted warmly.
"Good evening, sir. Please, come in."
Okopi stepped inside, glancing at Ene, who looked startled to see him.
"I came to congratulate you," Okopi began, his eyes twinkling. "Ene told me the good news about her pregnancy. I'm happy for both of you.
Agada froze, the words echoing in his ears. "Pregnancy? What pregnancy?" Ene's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't yet informed her husband, planning to find the right moment. Now, the landlord had inadvertently revealed her secret.
"You didn't know?" Okopi asked, feigning surprise. "I assumed Ene had told you." Agada turned to his wife, confusion and hurt evident on his face. "Ene, is this true? Are you pregnant?"
She lowered her head, feeling the weight of the situation. "Yes, I was going to tell you tonight. I just found out myself."
An awkward silence enveloped the room. Sensing the tension, Okopi cleared his throat. "Well, I'll leave you two to talk. Congratulations again."
As soon as the door closed behind the landlord, Agada faced Ene. "Why did he know before me? Why would you share such news with him first?"
Ene searched for the right words but found none. "I didn't mean to tell him before you. It just happened. He's been so supportive of us, like family. I felt comfortable sharing with him."
"But I'm your husband. I should have been the first to know. Agada said.
She reached out, touching his arm gently. "I understand, and I'm sorry. It was a mistake. Please forgive me."
He sighed, pulling away slightly. "It's just... unexpected. I needed to know before him. I'm your husband."
Ene nodded, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. "I'm so sorry." She said.
That night, as Ene lay beside her husband, she staring at the ceiling. She was deeply worried. She had managed to convince Agada for now, but she knew the seeds of doubt had been sown in his heart. She knew trouble would come, but she does not know when.
