The House Rent Saga Episode 6

Agada woke up early that Saturday morning with joy in his heart. Things were finally working out for him and his wife. For the first time in many months, he felt like a man again. He had a job. His wife had a shop. Their landlord, Mr. Okopi, had shown them kindness they never expected. Agada decided that it was time to show appreciation.

He dressed up and went to the market. He came back with a big goat. Ene was surprised when she saw it.

"What do you want to do with this goat?" she asked.

"It's for the landlord," Agada said. "We are going to thank him for all he has done. I want us to cook different kinds of food and take it to him. He is more than a landlord to us now."

Ene nodded. "That's a good idea."

Agada slaughtered the goat. Ene went straight to the kitchen and started cooking. She boiled

the goat meat and fried some of it. She prepared egusi soup with plenty goat meat. She made pounded yam, eba, and fufu. She also cooked fried rice and jollof rice, and roasted chicken. She did everything with joy. But deep inside her, she knew the truth about the landlord's kindness.

When the food was ready, they both carried the coolers and drinks to Okopi's house. The landlord welcomed them warmly.

"Ah, you people brought a feast!" Okopi said.

"You have been good to us, sir," Agada said. "We just want to thank you."

They all sat down and started eating. Agada smiled as he ate and laughed. He told the landlord how he was now making money from the bus. He said customers liked the bus and he was saving little by little.

Okopi nodded. "Just keep working hard. You will be fine."

After some time, Agada stood up. "Let me go home. Ene, collect our plates when the landlord is done. I will be waiting for you."

Ene nodded. "No problem."

Agada thanked the landlord again and left. Once he was gone, Ene packed the remaining food and told Okopi to help her transfer them into his own containers. While he was doing that, she stood close to him. She touched his shoulder gently.

"You have not even thanked me properly for this food," she said softly.

Okopi turned and looked at her. "Do you want us to go inside?"

Ene smiled. "Yes. That's why I stayed behind."

They went into the landlord's bedroom and did something sweet. It was not the first time, and it didn't take long. When they were done, Ene cleaned up and carried her empty coolers back home.

Agada was already lying down in their room. He had no idea what had happened.

One week passed. Agada continued his daily work with the bus. He would wake up, clean the bus, eat breakfast, and go out. Ene also opened her shop every morning and sold provisions and household items. Neighbours started calling them "the lucky couple."

But one day, Ene noticed something strange. She missed her peri.od. She thought it might be stress, so she waited a few more days. Still, nothing came. She bought pregnancy test strips and used them.

Two red lines appeared.

She stood still, staring at the result. It was clear. She was pregnant.

She didn't know how to feel. She sat down and thought for a long time. She remembered everything that had happened. Her husband only touched her once that month. But she had gone to the landlord's room up to ten times. She didn't need a doctor to tell her who the father was.

Still, she wanted to be sure. She went to the hospital the next day and did a proper test.

The nurse brought the result. "Congratulations, you are pregnant," she said.

Ene thanked her and walked out quietly.

When she got home, she sat down on the bed and held her stomach..

"This child is not for my husband," she said in a low voice. "It belongs to Okopi. But I cannot tell anyone. My husband must never know."

That evening, she cooked and served Agada his food. He ate and smiled.

"God is really blessing us," he said. "I believe very soon, we will have our own house."

Ene smiled too. "Amen."

But in her heart, she knew the real reason why the landlord was so generous. She remembered what she said the first time she slept with him. She was only trying to help her husband. She didn't know it would get to this point.

Now she was pregnant, and her husband was thanking God.

She stood up and packed the plates.

"I will carry this pregnancy and say it belongs to "I will carry this pregnancy and say it belongs to Agada," she said to herself. "I must never allow the truth to come out. I will not destroy my husband's happiness."

She looked at herself in the mirror and adjusted her blouse.

"This baby must be a blessing," she said.

But she knew that a day would come when she might not be able to hide the truth anymore. She just didn't know when.

For now, she would smile, cook, and pretend like everything was normal.
