Searching For a Male Child Episode Four
Eberechi left Alozie's house with gratitude in her heart. When she held the N3 million in her hands, her mood truly changed. She realized that poverty had made her to behave like 'mugu. 'By merely holding the money in her hands, she was gradually coming back to her senses.
Eberechi realized how she had neglected herself and allowed her husband to use her like a piece of rag to clean the floor. The money given to him by Alozie seemed to have restored her sense of self-worth. She was now thinking properly like a human being. Before now, she was thinking like someone under the perpetual spell of her husband, but the money restored her ability to think independently.
"Poverty is a very bad thing. Just by holding this money, I'm now thinking properly. I can now make my own plans because I have money in my hands. I can now make my future plans. I can now talk of establishing a business. I can even plan the future of my children without minding what my husband will do. Truly, it is now that I can see clearly. Poverty was like 'poto poto' inside my head and it was blocking my brain and not allowing me to think normally. "Eberechi said to herself.
She brought out the huge cash and dropped it on the floor. She danced around the money as if she had won a golden prize. She was so happy that she used her small MP music player to play music loudly in her room. It was night but she did not mind. She kept dancing around the money, rejoicing and thanking God that she was about to be a businesswoman.
It was marriage that broke Eberechi. Before she got married, she was a big businesswoman who owned her own foodstuff store. It was her father who gave her money to build the business, but immediately after she got married, her husband collected all the money from her and told her to stay at home and become a housewife.
"He knew that if I don't have money, he would be able to control me to do whatever he wants. Not having money is a very bad thing. When you don't have your own money, you begin to behave like a slave. I was a slave under my husband because he was always threatening to stop giving me money to feed my children. Even at that, he was only giving me 'small small change' despite having a lot of money. People think we are enjoying but it's a lie. This visit to Alozie has opened my eyes. A wise woman like me was behaving like a 'sheep'. I was just tolerating my husband because I had no other way of taking care of my children. But now that I have my own money, he can never try 'wahala' with me." Eberechi said as she continued to dance in her room.
"Me that was a businesswoman before marriage, my husband reduced me to nothing. He reduced me to zero. He reduced me to a slave. I don't even know what happened to me again. I don't know the point at which I abandoned myself and became totally unaware of what is happening around me. I look very old despite being a young woman. All I cared about was bearing children for a man who does not care about my health. He does not even care about the children I'm bearing. All he wants is for me to bear a male child for him, even if it means I die in the process. He is a very wicked man." Eberechi said. She was even weeping as she was dancing alone around the money given to her by Alozie.
"Alozie has come to rescue me. I was not sick. I was not mad. I still have my brain intact. It was
poverty that made me to behave like a mad woman. If I was not poor, I would have resisted my husband and stopped him from getting me pregnant for eight times. Now, my eyes have opened and I'm going to just pay attention to caring for the children I have given birth to. I'm not giving birth to another child. If my husband comes to my room to get me pregnant, I will refuse. If he invites me to his room, I will reject his initiation. If he says he will not give me money again, I will just tell him not to mind. I'm now an independent woman capable of taking good care of myself and paying for my children's food and education." Eberechi said. She got tired of dancing and then sat on her bed to rest for a while.
As she was resting, someone knocked on her door. She wondered who it was that came to see her at that hour of the night. The time was already past 11pm and most people had gone to bed. Eberechi quickly picked the bundle of cash and hid it under her bed. She then opened the door. It was her husband who came to be with her for the night.
"Good evening sir." Eberechi said to her husband. Eberechi used to fear her husband a lot. The man was like a monster to her. But she was prepared to resist him that night.
"What is good about the evening? You don't have to greet me. I have come for us to start another pregnancy journey. I need a male child and you have to get pregnant again. Your last child is already approaching ten months. Remove your clothes, come to bed and meet me." Okenwa said as he went to Eberechi's bed and lay there in preparation eat honey.
"I'm not going to allow you to drink from my water pot tonight. In fact, you will never eat from my honey pot again. I'm done giving birth and I'm done getting pregnant for you. I already have eight children. That's enough." Eberech said confidently. She was scared such that her lips were shaking, but she spoke loudly.
"You should leave my room. You are a wicked man. You want to kill me by getting me pregnant for the 9th time. This is not going to happen." Eberechi said. She opened the door and asked her husband to leave the room. She also wanted to see what her husband would do next.
