Surviving in Canada Episode Nine
Dr Williams faced the court of law for his assault case against Ekaette. He was not able to defend his actions. The judge sentenced him to six months in prison. He was immediately sent to jail. His Oyinbo wife also initiated divorce proceedings against him. Problems started hitting him from left right and center. Apart from the divorce case, the hospital where he worked also sacked him with immediate effect. The divorce case against him was successful and 90 percent of his wealth was given to his Oyinbo wife who also got custody rights for their children. He became broke. His wife took their children and left.
"I can't be married to a man who beats women. I can't be married to a man who tells lies.
I can't be a wife to a man who had the heart to abandon his wife and children in Nigeria for ten years without sending them money for upkeeps. I can't allow such a man to raise my children. I'm glad I have divorced him. I'm happy we are not married anymore. It's better we go our separate ways so I can raise my children alone. Their father is a monster and I can't allow him access to my children ever again." The Oyinbo wife said after she had successfully taken her children out of Dr Williams' house.
While in jail, Dr Williams was regretting his actions. He regretted going to the hotel to attack Ekaette. After spending a few days in prison, his brain started thinking normally again. He started reviewing all the things he had done for the past ten years. He regretted everything. He knew he had lost everything. He lost his Nigerian wife and his Oyinbo wife. He lost his children with Ekaette and he lost his children with the Oyinbo woman. He was alone in prison.
"I have made a lot of mistakes. I have lost my job. I lost the job I cherished so much. I lost all my children. I'm now alone here in prison and there is no way I can make amends. I lost everything I have built in Canada. I lost my wealth. My life is now a complete disaster. I don't know if I would be able to recover from this. If I had known, I would have gone to Nigeria to bring Ekaette as I promised. I would not have allowed our long-distance relationship to last for too long. I became careless about her because I was seeing more beautiful Oyinbo women. How I wish I can turn back the hands of the clock. I wish I could go back and make amends." Dr Williams said in his heart. He was weeping but it was too late.
Meanwhile, Ekaette had a serious problem. While the police were working on the case between her and Dr Williams, they discovered that Ekaette and her children had almost overstayed their visas. It was discovered that they entered Canada with visitors visas and they were supposed to spend only six months in Canada and she was not supposed to work. It is unlawful to use a visit visa to work in Canada. You need a work permit and Ekaette does not have it. Due to Ekaette's talents and prowess in cooking, the hotels she worked for did not check her visa status before offering her jobs. Know one thought about her visa status again because she had quickly became a celebrity. It was like grace covered her. But the police. discovered this.
"You were not supposed to be working in Canada with your visitor visa. You are to leave Canada within the next 24 hours." The police tell Ekaette. She broke down in tears.
"But I paid a lot of money for these visas. I paid the visa agent N15 million. He told me that he did family visas for me and my children. How amends." Dr Williams said in his heart. He was weeping but it was too late.

How come they are telling me I'm supposed to leave Canada within 24 hours? I did not expect this kind of bad news. What kind of problem is this?" Ekaette said in her heart. She was weeping as she was preparing her bags. Her children were also weeping. They packed their bags in deep silence. They had to leave everything behind.
"I don't understand what happened, but the visa agent must have cheated me. But he assured me that everything was okay with the visas he did for us. I don't know that there are different kinds of Canadian visas. I didn't know that a work visa is different from a tourist visa. I don't even understand the difference between a work visa and a visitors visa. I was thinking that once I can land in Canada, I'm free to do everything I want. I didn't know I was already committing a crime by using a visitor's visa to work. Lack of education is bad. I might be wise, but there are sometimes I fall 'mugu' because I'm not educated." Ekaette said.
It happened that the visa agent in Nigeria had collected so much money from Ekaette and deceived her. She had no idea. She just paid the man N15 million and collected the visas given to her. She did not show the visas to anyone.
She didn't care to check what was written on them. So far as she took the three visas to the airport and they were allowed to travel to Canada, she was satisfied.
That night, she and her children did not sleep well. They stayed up late, packing their bags. They could not pack everything.
"Does it mean I'm going to lose everything I have worked for in Canada? Does it mean I will loose my company? This visa agent has poured 'sand sand' into my garri. He has spoiled everything for me. Now, I will have to go back to Uyo to start selling crayfish again? I never expected this to happen. I thought my life was going on so well. I never knew everything would scatter. I never knew I would be asked to leave Canada. I thought my life had been established here, but that is not going to happen again." Ekaette said sadly. She was heartbroken.
The next day, Ekaette and her children boarded a flight and flew to Nigeria.
